After more than a year of what looked like a successful
implementation of NTBackup using custom scripts and Task
Scheduler, a routine audit showed NTBackup (SBS2000)was
skipping a lot of mundane files...like <BR>
C:\Program Files\Windows NT\dialer.exe, <BR>
C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\Wordpad.exe, <BR>
C:\WINNT\system32\os2\dll\doscalls.dll <BR>
Overall the number was about 270 in \Program Files and
1750 in \System32. I can't believe all these files
are "in use", and besides, Registry settings that
(according to the KB) are supposed to govern this
behavior, didn't.<BR>

Anybody else notice this?

there is a reg hack in the download section of mcse2000.com that can backup
most files in use.

As mentioned below, Registry setting changes did not affect this behavior. These files, by my best estimate, are not in use. We are talking wordpad, dialer, some OS2 stuff, etc

Behavior occurs on scripted jobs as well as manually selected jobs (folders)

Very odd..

I got it!#@$*

In a determined search of the logs, I discovered that the files in question ARE being backed up after all, but not during the C:\ drive Normal set. They are backed up separately with the System State set as "Boot files" believe it or not. It is completely unexplained, but C:\ set backs up hypertrm.exe from this particular folder and then System State backs up dialer.exe, HTRN_JIS.DLL, and wordpad.exe from the same path (I'm sure there are many other examples of this behavior in the log). If you don't do a System State (which all good boys and girls should), those files would not be included in a restore. Mystery partially solved..
