Hi
I have a client (running Netware) who has just acquired a second office (running NT 4.0). We are looking to build an integrated server environment that will support both locations with email, collaboration, shared documents and calendar. Both sites are running DSL. Is the best solution SBS 2003 at one site and a VPN connecting the two locations? If so, what firewall do you recommend? Is there a whitepaper which outlines this
Thanks for your help
Ric

Hi Javier,

15 at the "primary site" and 10 at the secondary.

Thanks

Hi Rich!

You could put the SBS2k3 server on the primary site and a 2nd DC on the
secondary site... and link them by VPN (as you mentioned). This way you
could login the clients and have access to files on the 2nd site even if the
link goes down... and you still would only need SBS CALs.

Hi Javier

Two quick follow-up questions if you don't mind.
1. Do you have a preference as to the firewalls for the VPN connection?
2. Is there a place I can go to find documentation on how to set this up

Thanks for your quick response and help

Ric

Hi Rich,

> 1. Do you have a preference as to the firewalls for the VPN connection?

For the primary site... I recommend you get SBS2k3 Premium edition and just
use a cheap firewall (that allows VPN passtrough) in front of ISA, nothing
fancy (and without VPN capabilities). SBS/RRAS will take care of the VPN for
you on that end. On the other end... I would probably go something beefier
with VPN capabilities (although you could still use RRAS on the other
server). I don't have any specific recomendations.

If you are talking about the VPN setup... in SBS2k3 is very easy with the
wizards. I don't have any documents for that right now... probably the help
files within SBS are your best bet. On the other end... it depends on the
router.

Hi Rich,

Not Sure what part of the world you live in, but here in oz we have many DSL
providers that offer Private DSL networks for around the same cost of DSL
Internet connections. Typically with unlimited data, all you need in these
cases is a couple of DSL modems, the ISP looks after security etc.

All that you need to do is setup a couple of routing rules on you W2K
server.

I don't know about your neck of the woods but DSL is 1.5 down and 200k or so
up and if you VPN with 15 users.....even at 1.5 if you had SDSL that is
UGLY!!!! I would consider a TS solution otherwise you will see nasty
performance issues and have wasted days of time.

Depends on where are in the day

8-6 Mon-Fri = Prison :-)
Any Other Time = nice place (IMHO)
