Hi,

I'm trying to setup a development instance of a clients full fledged
multi-home server in Windows 2000 Small Business Server. It's a multi-homed
server and no matter what I do I cannot get around IP address conflicts on
the WAN adapter. Can someone explain to me how to get around this portion of
setup succesfully. I thought I understood networking and SBS but this step is
tearing my head off. I'm wondering if the problem is that I statically
address the WAN NIC before I start the installation. Should I leave all NIC's
as DHCP Clients and let the Wizard tell me what to do?

Hi Rex,

The internal nic should be static and it will get automatically 192.168.16.2
when the SBS setup is run. The internal nic should also be connected to a
hub or something when installing.
The external nic would be recommended to be static as well, and certainly
can be static when connected to a router. Please explain your setup.

My setup isn't complete. Each time I try I get IP address conflicts and it
stalls in the middle of the SBS Installation at configuring the network.

How should I have the WAN and LAN nic configured prior to initiating the SBS
setup? Maybe more importantly is how do I answer the dialog that prompts me
for the LAN and WAN IP setup.

The wan adapter is being fed directly from a DHCP Server Enabled Router.
It's grabbing a 10.x.x.x IP with no problem. The LAN nic is also going into
another router that feeds a switch. The WAN interface of the router being
fed by the LAN card of the SBS Server NIC is configured to be a DHCP client.

When prompted to enter the LAN IP of the local card I have been using
10.1.1.1 {IP}
255.255.255.0{Subnet}
and leaving gateway blank

Once I move beyond this point I get the IP Address conflig an interface
shutsdown the SBS installation hangs and that's the end of the show. I
thought I knew what I was doing but this is killing me.

I should diagram the network to prevent confusion:

The first line is the device.
The second line is the device IP.
The 3rd line is the DHCP state of the device.

Internet-> [ WAN ROUTER ] -> [ SBS WAN NIC] - [ SBS LAN NIC] - [SUBNET
ROUTER] -> [ SWITCH ] -> CLIENTS
-----------> 10.200.9.X <---> 10.200.9.199 <----> 10.1.1.1 <-----> 10.1.1.2
<----|
-----------> DHCP SRV <------- STATIC IP -------> STATIC IP <----- DHCP CLNT

Your servernics should be in different IP ranges. Check this out:

Leave the external nic disconnected when setting up. Have you finished the
integrated setup yet?

No, I'm just now starting. I could not access this site from Windows only
from Linux or MAC. So now I'm working on a MAC. {SIGH} I love Windows over
the other two but stuff like this drives me nuts.

Attempting the install with WAN NIC disconnected.

Everything worked fine after disabling the WAN nic. That's just what I needed.
