Can anyone point me in the direction of a best pactice for moving SBS 2000
to new hardware? The new hardware is dual processor Xeon, RAID 5, 3 x 36GB
Disks, 2GB RAM. Existing hardware is single PIII processor, software mirror
2 x 18GB disks, 1GB RAM.
Also, How do I move the data, especially Exchange? Can the SBS 2000
communicate with each other while I migrate the data or do I need a simpler
method e.g. remove disk from existing server, install in the new one, copy
the data, move disk back? This would not work with exchange though? Could I
recover Exchange via Tape (tape drives are also different)?

Any tips/experiences will be very welcome.

Thanks

Scott

Hi Scott.

This is a step by step guide on how to migrate from SBS 4.5 to 2000 but it
should work for SBS2000 to SBS 2000.

Is there not an easier way of migrating the users, folders, security, groups
etc than just re-creating? I can see it makes sense between software
versions but for a straight migration where I would like to retain the
server exactly how it is (apart from the increased specification) can I not
backup and restore these items? What about an Active Directory Restore?

if you have a spare copy of W2K Server (non SBS) you can install it onto the
new box, DCPromo it into a DC role, copy your data across and then take a
leap into 'here be dragons' territory.

You have to move the FSMO roles off SBS to the new box. I've never attempted
this.
You have to remove the SBS from AD. I've never attempted this.

OR, once the AD is synchronised between the old and new boxes you turn off
the old one and forcefully take the FSMO roles and clean the old SBS out of
AD.

So far, we can get where we're going but it's not real clean. AND THERE'S a
problem, the SBS's name changes so you won't be able to directly mount your
Exchange store. Means you must exmerge exchange before you kill off the old
box and this means you lose 'single instance storage'.

Got some spare hardware and copies of both NT4Server and W2KServer?

Install NT4S as BDC to the existing SBS.
Disconnect it after copying everything over from the old SBS, including the
exchange stores.
Promote it to PDC.
Delete original SBS from domain.
Upgrade it to W2KS.
Install vanilla W2KS onto the new box using the same name as your original
SBS.
DCPromo it in.
DCPromo the temp box out, this transfers the FSMO roles to the new box and
allows tidy removal of the temp.

SBS CD1 and follow the bouncing ball.
Service pack to exactly same level as existing system.
Replace the newly created exchange stores with your current ones.

Feet up, large stogie, beer.

Have you tried this method then?

My thoughts were to do a minimum build of SBS on the new hardware and then
do a full restore restore from tape e.g. as if the current server had failed
and were were forced into purchasing/installing to hardware that was not the
same. The two items that I thought might throw a spanner in the works is the
extra processor and RAID 5 controller.
There are a couple of documents on restoring SBS from tape on the BExec site
but I didnt know whether these had been tested in the field or there was a
better method available.
Back in my Novell days moving hardware was a simple enough task as long as
you followed the procedure. With SBS things are not a straight forward with
no clear route to follow.

Scott
