We have a SBS 2000 server with SP4 2 days ago the modems
stopped answering calls from remote clients on dialup and
faxes sent through shared fax service began failing. VPN
clients are able to connect without problem. Modems test
okay. There are no settings to keep dialups out. Error
message is 678 modem did not respond. Any suggestions on
what may have caused this?

What kind of modems are they? Did you check the RRAS-configuration? Turned
on logging on those modems? Anything in the eventlogs?

Can you send out a fax? and are you tired of questions yet? lol

Under Microsoft shared fax service manager, when you right click on
Microsoft Shared Fax, make sure the checkbox is cleared for "Disable
reception of new faxes".

In RRAS, under ports is the modem still listed there? (That was my last
question.)

It may be you need to reinstall the driver for the modem. You may also want
to test the modem using hyperterminal or something.

You should also check your cables (if external), verify that the ports are
functional.

We can't send faxes. Modems are listed in RRAS. Disable
reception check box is cleared.

The modems are 3com externals and 1 internal actiontec.
RRAS configurations have been checked. VPN clients come
in without problem. Logging is turned on for modems and
nothing in event logs. Modems pickup incoming calls but
then drop them as if they were never answered.
