Hi all,

I'm having trouble finding info about migrating SBS 2000 to SBS 2003 on new
hardware. I found a link to a white paper, but it says it isn't available
yet. I'm trying to get set up and functioning this weekend, so I'm getting
desperate for info! Please help!

Kristina,

You are proceeding just a little ahead of the documentation release. If you
feel uncomfortable without the docs, you need to delay your process. Let me
add that I don't think you will find the documentation that will be released
as something you scan during lunch and jump into a 1pm to start that
afternoon. The upgrade process to change platforms is fairly technical,
though not complex, but it is also very detailed stuff. This is definitely
not one of those wizard things of click Next, next, next, finish.

Well Kristina, although SBS 2003 is an awesome product, sometimes its =
not always helpful to be on the bleeding edge. While the official =
launch was last week, some of the support documentation is still having =
the finishing touches put on it and should be ready shortly. By the =

Just curious, what are you using for media??? Have you found a =
commercial source yet??

Guess I am on the bleeding edge. I'm using the RC software for media and =
intended to upgrade as soon as I could get my hands on the retail =
version, which appears to be Nov 1st. I'm pushing because I am =
installing a brand new server and do not want to install SBS 2000 now, =
only to want to upgrade it in a month. I'd really like to do a clean =
install. Also, I cannot wait to put the new server in because my old one =
is having hardware failures... which includes the tape drive... so I'm =
not getting backups. I'm currently doing manual backups to file and =
copying that to my file server. SO... I have a bit of a predicament.

I was under the impression from SBS chats that many were using the RC in =
production situations and were quite pleased, which is why I chose this =
path. I installed on Monday and planned to play and migrate and test =
things all week, then go live this weekend.=20

Am I disastrously mistaken?=20

Thanks all,

A Release Candidate is still a Release Candidate and not the final product.
First of all, you have less than 5 clients? right? In the RC version you
will not be able to increase the number of CALs.

I think you should take some preventive measures with your actual server and
test drive SBS2003 (a couple of installs). My guess is that if you do
everything in a hurry you will end up with trouble in the future. But... it
is really your call.

Christina,

All I can offer is that I've been holding RC and even MSDN RTM in hand for
sometime, and I haven't moved my own server yet. On the other hand, I've
been keeping my SBS 2000 alive with succes despite years of fiddling with
it.

If you are interested in forging ahead, you would likely find that using
ADMT and the Exchange Server Migration Wizard are core in the process that
MS is intending to document. Still, the methods I've seen illustrated to
date are not the way I would probably do a migration myself.

My preference would still be to do a temporary DC, then install the new SBS
with the same namespace and the same SAM. This is more complicated to
perform, less complicated on deployment and workstation cleanup.

I'd like to help you more on this, but I have traditionally shied away from
proposing documentation on methods I haven't performed myself.

I've little doubt that you are getting ahead of the crowd. The RC was indeed
quite good, but the RTM is in public less than a week, and you have no
support documentation.
