I have a client, 48 Workstations, one W2K Server, and an SBS 2K box. How
does the migration policy work now that SBS2K3 is out?

Thanks,
Douglas

Let me elaborate a bit more.

We are planning on adding another twenty to fifty machines this year, so we
will need something beyond SBS2K. In the past I was able to get the info
regarding the migration pack to Backoffice2K from SBS2K. It seems that is
no longer supported. Will I have to upgrade to SBS2K3 and then do some form
of migration past that?

Thanks!

Hi Douglas!

AFAIK-> There is still a migration pack for SBS2k(*)... is just that the
Backoffice product was discontinued, but you still get the same components
(you actually use the backoffice disks to do it). Look for MS Sku# E75-00466
(you also need the CALs with it + SQL CALs if you are using it).

http://www.microsoft.com/sbserver/techinfo/deployment/2000/MigrationPack.asp

(*)-Note: Unless it has been discontinued because of SBS2k3, which I don't
think so (as of now).

However, you might also want to consider migrating (at least licensewise) to
SBS2k3 and then performing the migration from there (since you would get
Win2k3/Exc2k3). The only problem is that (TTBOMK) the migration pack for
SBS2k3 has not been released yet (and it may not be released for some
time... although they should, since the SKU already exists). On the other
hand SBS2k3 has increased the number of clients to 75... so that may help
you a little while you wait.

I looked around for the SKU for the 2000 version of the migration pack, and
every place said out of stock. Problem is we have to do this sometime in
the next month or so. When you upgrade SBS2K to SBS2k3, what would I need
to purchase? Just the basic upgrade, or do I have to buy all new licenses?

Hi Douglas!

If you really want the migration pack for SBS2k... I would call you local MS
office and ask for a quote (at least here... they send the request to the
vendor of your choice) they will tell you the 411 on the issue.

For upgrading to SBS2k3... you need to upgrade the server software and the
CALs (if you do it before this month ends you get 5 free cals... a $500
value... :-).

Here are the skus (US) if you are interested:
Upgrade to SBS2k3Premium T75-00037

Upgrade 5pack CALs Device: T74-01214
Upgrade 5pack CALs User: T74-01215

Upgrade 20pack CALs Device: T74-01212
Upgrade 20pack CALs User: T74-01213

Source: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/howtobuy/pricing.mspx

You would need first one and 45 upgrade CALs to complete the upgrade in your
case.
