Hello all,

I will be migrating a SBS 2000 site to a new Windows 2003 server running
Exchange 2003. I haven't really used SBS server before and would just like
any warnings/ideas/suggestions that will help the migration process go
smooth. I have setup the new 2003 Server w/ Exchange 2003 in a new domain and
will need to migrate user data from the SBS to the new server. I will then
wipe the SBS and install 2003 Server on it to perform as another DC in the
new domain.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Joe

well we could have made your life much easier
had you asked before moving forward

but basically copy all your data from the SBS server down to workstation,
then connect that workstation to your new domain and then move everything
back up

jumping into a migration, by whatever method, blind (please pardon the
jargon) is likely to be problematic.

Question. Are you moving from SBS to W2k3+Exchange to remove SBS
restrictions?

Yeah tell me about it....
I've been called into help a fellow technician who has already done the
above stated actions. That's why I thought I'd see if anyone out there
actually had any good advice on this since I haven't really used SBS before.
I would appreciate any useful tips that anyone who has actually migrated
from SBS 2000 to a Server 2003 w/ Exchange 2003 can provide.
Thanks again
Joe

I have no idea why the decision was made to migrate from SBS 2000 to Server
2003 w/ Exchange 2003. I am guessing the site has outgrown SBS and they want
better performance from a newer, faster server. Bottom line is data has to be
moved from one to the other regardless of their reasons.
Thanks,
Joe

with so little information available it is difficult to advise however they
have probably already wasted money.

If the motivation is that they have exceeded SBS user limits there's this
thing called the 'migration pack' which would probably work out cheaper than
your plan and is fully documented and supported.
