Since patch management is becoming more and more of a headache all the time,
I am looking at SUS. I have a couple questions...

1) I've heard this is a free tool. Is this the case?
2) Has anyone here loaded it and does it work well? We have Win98 and XP
clients and Win2K/WIn2K3 servers
3) Are there any pitfalls to look out for - i.e. should I wait until MS has
released the new version they are wrking on (ver 2.0)

Thanks,

Brad

Yes.

Yes, many of us use it. Works great. Doesn't do 9x platform or other
server components. (exchange for example)

It will install URLScan if not already loaded. This could affect other
web apps, but can adjust settings if so.
No need to wait - there is a migration (not upgrade) path to the new
version when it is ready.

Also, check out Shavlik HFNetChk limited version - 1 server / 10
workstations for FREE
http://www.shavlik.com - its a great product.

Works great for me.

Make sure you install the IIS Lockdown manually first (so you get to
configure it right), or SUS installs it for you with default
configuration (which breaks SBS).

I wouldn't wait for WUS (SUS v2), even though SUS is limited to
critical patches.

Does the shavlik tool work for Win9X machines?

Thanks,

Where can I get instructions on installing the IIS lockdown or is this also
a component of SUS and I just need to make sure I select to install it
first??

No, sorry it doesn't do 9x. I'll spare you the "get rid of them" speech.
Oops, just did it ;?)

You can get it separately from microsoft.com in the Download Center.

There's no way to do a separate installation from the SUS download.

The Shavlik product does look impressive. However, I wonder if SUS 2.0 will
be able to provide a lot of what 1.0 can;t (as compared to Shavlik).. DO you
know anything on ver 2.0 at all? Is it worth waiting for to get a free tool
instead of paying for one like Shavlik?

As I understand it, WUS is being designed to eventually cover all major MS
products, and will have a fairly flexible feature set with regards to
targeting deployments, and reporting.
I'm looking forward to it. I am using the Shavlik free version, but mainly
for verifying and reporting. Most of my updating is currently done with
SUS, scripts, or manually.

There is a lot of information on WUS available on MS, check it out
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/wus/default.mspx
