I've been doing some searching on member servers and I haven't found an
article that really tells me what I want to know. These questions are a bit
scattered, so I do apologize up front for that.

1. I have the server installed and added to the domain, but when I try to
log on with a domain account, it sits endlessly at the "Loading your
personal settings." page. Am I missing something about permissions? All I've
done is add the server to the domain, nothing else. Did I miss something?
2. I think I installed all sorts of things a member server that isn't going
to be a BDC shouldn't have: DHCP, SMTP, and a few others I had to beat down
(disable in services) to get the server to boot without errors. What are the
core components one should install for a member server that will be a
file.print/application server?
3. Since this is meant to be soley a member server, should Active Directory
be installed? How do I get the permission groups from my SBS2000 to apply on
this server?
4. Should the member server have the firewall client installed or just point
it to the SBS2000 for the gateway? I hope to run SUS on this member server,
so it needs to get to the internet.

I'm sure I'll have more as I push further into this.

Thanks for your time!

Check your DNS settings on the Server Adapter.

You can remove IIS, DHCP, SMTP, etc. The server will function normally. I
would suggest installing Terminal Services in Remote Admin mode so you can
TS into the server remotely. BTW: You remove these services from
Add/Remove Programs- WIndows Componenents.

I assume you mean ADUC console, you can install the Admin tools if you want
but I prefer to use Terminal Services to admin an SBS Box remotely.

I would suggest just having the gateway address and in your IE have it point
to your Proxy Server (SBS Box). No need for the Firewall Client.

Yes... make sure that is pointing to the SBS for DNS.

This depends on what you want to do with the server. Read more about this on
the 3rd question.

I agree with John... but if you are talking about running AD (i.e. making
the server a DC) then you really have to consider what you want to get from
doing this. Most SBS enviroments don't need a 2nd DC, but if you need
absolutely redundancy for logons then you probably need to run DNS (and have
a ready-to-go DHCP). If you only want a file/print server... then this is
all unncessary.

I kind of disagree here... I would install the firewall client. You can get
away with using IE through the proxy... but if you need to do something else
(i.e use RDP from that server to outside the lan or have an application that
doesn't use proxy) then the client is necessary (unless you want to use
SecureNAT).

If you're going to install SUS later, don't bother removing IIS - you'll
need it. Unless of course you would like to (re)install your web root to a
drive other than C, which you can do by following the instructions here:

Thanks everyone!

The DNS was pointing to the loopback adapter. I would swear I set it
properly during set up, but the days are blurry now....

I took off the items that won't be needed, but kept IIS. One of the main
roles of the server will be a SUS setup.

I assumed (incorrectly) that I would have to have AD installed to configure
permissions. (I made this assumption based on the fact that I couldn't get
to any permission groups...my bad.) There is no internet to have this
machine be a BDC, so Active Directory will stay off.

As long as it doesn't screw anything up, I'll likely put the firewall client
on the server. We run a lot of POOR vendor software and I can't count on
them to have set their access up properly to use a proxy.

Thanks again to all! I'm sure I'll be banging on the door again soon with
SUS questions. =P
