ISA question in regards to HTTP
I have SBS 2003 and ISA 2004, I want to block users from downloading
documents from the web like powerpoint files, movies etc etc etc I know it is
http downloads and I know where the configure http is on the http allow rule
in my rule base. I have setup the extension lists to block by extension etc
which all works fine, my issue is when they are in hotmail or gmail or the
like and click to download a file they can still download as the extension
isn't a .wmv it's more like the below: -
http://mail.google.com/mail/?view=att&disp=indzip&attid=0.1&th=1094b95997f06b28
Which doesn't block the file still comes down, I'm pretty sure it's
something to do with the signatures or headers tabs in configure http on the
rule but don't know enough about it and can't find a reliable resorce to
explain what I need to do.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Internet access issue - wierd one...
We have a strange issue with a particular XP pro SP2 machine in our domain.
If I log onto this machine as the local administrator, I can access the
internet no problems. The user who sits at this machine was unable to access
the internet until I gave her local admin privs on this machine - not even
the power users group did the trick. Another user who sits at this machine
in the evenings was also unable to access the internet using her domain
logon. When I gave her domain account local admin rights on that machine (as
I had done for the previous user I mentioned) I expected that would solve
the problem. NOPE!! She still is unable to access the internet - simply
gets a "page unable to be displayed" for any site she attempts to visit!
I tried pinging some sites and that worked just fine so traffic is getting
through - maybe port 80 is somehow being blocked? I turned off the firewall
just in case - and that still did not fix the issue. The strange thing is
that this user can log onto other machines and access the internet so it
must be somehow related to something on that PC - I just do not know where
to look next...
Has anyone got any suggestions on trouble shooting this issue?
Thanks,

Antivirus and Firewall Protection
Viruses are small files that attach to emails or downloads and infect
your computer which is why you need virus protection. They can be as
harmless as displaying funny pictures on your monitor or they can go
through your address book and send everyone within your address book
the same virus. More dangerous versions can completely wipeout your
computer and all your information and some can take over your machine
and send spam from your computer. Without your knowledge, you can
become a spammer. Virus protection saves you from virus problems.
Hackers are the underbelly of the internet. They are people who
randomly scan the internet to find "openings" so they can go in and
snoop around. Once into your machine, they have as much access to it as
you do. That means your online banking, personal data, family data .
are all available to a hacker. Hacker security is your safety net when
surfing.
The Shield Pro 2006 gives you both virus protection and hacker security
by providing ongoing support and updates. When a virus breaks out, The
Shield Pro 2006 will provide a patch within 2-3 hours and a fix for the
virus within 5 hours. You can set you computer to update viruses weekly
and run a complete virus scan. Virus protection is a must and no one
with internet access should surf without it.

XP home user unable to browse the domain using wireless...
I have a user with an XP Home sp2 machine of his own he uses here at work.
We have a domain here so this user needs to access domain resources. He has
a built in wireless card in his Dell laptop. Using the wireless he gets no
domain access at all - cannot even map a network drive even when supplying
domain credentials. If he disables his wireless card and plugs in using an
ethernet cable, everything works just fine. I have tried playing with some
of the settings in his wireless card - I do not see anything different in
there as compared to other wireless users. There is also a "1394 Connection"
when you look at all his network connections - that is enabled. Could it be
something to do with this and.. what is this anyway????
I tried turning off the firewall, nothing, turned on netbios etc...
nothing... I am not sure if maybe this is just an issue with the builkt in
wireless period and there is nothing I can do. I have not yet tried another
wireless card - but that is next on teh list of to-do's!!!
Has anyone ever seen this issue before and if so did you ever find a
resolution?
Thanks,

Prevent a user from move or delete on SBS 2000
Have a problem on our network. We have a server that has a bunch of shared
drives, but lately someone is moving files around and deleting folders. They
need to have full permissions to allow them to create, change the files, but
should not be allowed to move the file from the directory or delete without
permission.
Is there a way to pervent a user from moving the folders on the share, but
still allowing them full access to the share?

Remotely accessing a work computer from home...
I have a client that uses an XP Pro machine at work. THis machine has a full
time broadband connection via high speed (DSL) to the internet through Bell
Sympatico here in Canada. This woman needs to be able to connect to this
machine from her home PC periodically in the evenings to do some work on the
accounting system. She to has an XPO machine with a full time high speed
broadband connection using Bell Sympatico as well.
I know I could set up remote assistance on this machine, but is there a
better way I could have her connect to this machine to work on it using the
broadband connection that is active? Could I use RDP somehow to connect?
What IP would I use because her DSL modem has an IP assigned in the
192.168.xx.xx range and then dynamically assignes her own machine an
address... So I would need to know what address to use to get to the
external side of that actual DSL modem and then would ahve to direct traffic
to the 192.168.xx.xx address of her computer!
Does anyone have any ideas on how I could go about this or offer some other
ideas?
Thanks,

Small Business SMTP Connector
I have changed the SMTP server that I am using to route mail externally. That
is the only change that I have made, so I changed the name and then changed
the user name and password needed to access this smtp that is provided by my

Now I cant seem to be be able to send mails through exchange. I have tested
the SMTP server by setting up an account through Outlook and using the Pop3
as the account type. This works fine.
Is there any settings that I have over looked in exchange?

Exchange and Outlook 2000 Clients
I have an puzzling problem. We are running SBS 2000 w/ Exchange and use
Windows 2000 Pro workstations running Outlook XP. One of our users needs to
turn the spelling autocorrect features off. When she does this all seems
well, until later on during the day. Around 3 each day, all of the spelling
autocorrect options she disabled are re-enabled. Trying this on other PCs
results in the same.
I took a look around the GPO and found nothing. Obviously there is a policy
of some sort somewhere causing this to happen. Anyone have any suggestions
on where to look next?

Get quality targeted links to your website in days
Hidden behind the search engines lies a rarely-used "backdoor." And,
on the other side, a quicker and easier path awaits anyone who opens
it...
To get almost all the top rankings you want -- because, in under 7
days, you now have dozens, up to hundreds of new backlinks flooding
into your website... and you have gotten into the major search engines
(including Google).
Best of all, you have gotten there without slaving at your computer all
day, building a reciprocal link directory, buying expensive one-way
links, or having to write and distribute award-winning articles.
In fact, it does not require any difficult or painstaking labor. But,
it allows you to provide a type of valuable content (we'll mention what
it is in a moment) thousands of websites are practically begging for

live web-radio downloading...
I am making a case against users being able to listen to the radio live over
our broadband internet connection. The obvious is that they are using up
valuable company bandwidth but I wonder just how much bandwidth live radio
actually uses - so that I can use this in my case against it. This is a
smaller company and even the CEO listens to the live web-radio - so me
telling him not to do this will not even fizzle him - unless I can give him
a good argument.. I can easily shut it down - but before I do so, I have to
have a good reason to do it.
Any help would be appreciated...

Extremely slow printing to remote printers
I am having a hard time with a Windows 2000 Small Business Server.
Previously running OK, it has now decided to not like shared network
printers ? local printers work fine and adding a new printer that?s
hosted elsewhere works OK, but when you try and print it takes ages
(tens of minutes) for the print jobs to get to the target printer. If
you try and look at the remote printer queues or printer properties, the
status shows ?opening? for perhaps 5-10 mins before going ?ready? and
then if you click on the printer name it?s perhaps another 5-10 mins
before the queue is shown. The two remote printers are hosted on PCs
running XP Pro.
Things tried so far:
Deleted and re-created printers.
Checked system logs ? no directly-related errors (*but see below)
Tried creating a generic LaserJet 4 printer to confirm it?s not related
to the target printers (which are label printers)
Checked for Trojans and viruses ? nothing showing (AVG, Trojanhunter,
safety.live.com, Sysinternals? TCPView and ProcExp).
No firewalls running on any PC
Changed LAN card on server to another make/model
Reinstalled SP4
Checked for unwanted or suspicious Services
Uninstalled non-critical apps (Left only with MS Office and an in-house
management app that?s working fine on 15 other sites)
*The system logs showed that Modem Sharing was not starting properly,
but as it was not being used I deleted it from the network setup. I
suppose this may indicate a network-related issue but in every other
respect the system runs fine (speed, disk performance, network performance)
*The system logs also report that IPSec is not starting properly due to
unavailable system resources and this is the only anomaly I haven?t been
able to resolve. We are not using IPSec anyway but if anyone can shed
any light on whether this needs to be investigated further I would be
happy to oblige.
The server is a P4 2.8GHz with 768MB RAM and 21GiB free disk space.
Running SQL server and Terminal services for one other PC.
Any advice would be appreciated ? I haven?t checked for a rootkit yet
but if I head in that direction I will probably just go for a complete
reinstall.
Any suggestions folks?
Thanks

Has anyone come accross these errors in the DNS log. The 2000 SBS Server is
running SP4, build 5.00.2195.
Can you please suggest something.
The DNS server is configured to forward to a non-recursive DNS server at
195.74.102.146.
DNS servers in forwarders list MUST be configured to process recursive
queries.
Either
1) fix the forwarder (195.74.102.146) to allow recursion
- connect to it with DNS Manager
- bring up server properties
- open "Advanced" tab
- uncheck "Disable Recursion"
- click OK
OR
2) remove this forwarder from this servers forwarders list
- DNS Manager
- bring up server properties
- open "Forwarders" tab
- remove (195.74.102.146) from list of forwarders
- click OK

SBS2000 Lic question
Hi All,
I have SBS2000 and have been given a SBS2000 5 CAL add floppy disk and
license from another organisation who I understand have never used or added
the floppy, (its still sealed).
Presumably I can add it to my system as I undertand that Microsoft have no
record of which organisations have bought extra CALs and CALs are not linked
to any particular OS until they are installed.

Symantec backup for SBS question
Hi All,
Not strictly pure SBS I know but cant get any sense out of the Symantec
website.
I have SBS2000 and am using Veritas v9 backup exec which has 2 lic keys one
for the server and one for the agent that backs up exchange.
I now have Symantec Backup Exec 10d for Windows Small Business Server
There is only one lic key on the packet and I suspect it may only back up
the server files and not exchange even though it says its for Small Business
Server. Has anyone used this product will it backup exchange as well with
the one lic key.
Any thoughts or help appreciated?

Hi,
I am running SBS2003 Premium with Exchange 03 SP2, and I have a query. I
have a user who has deleted an email 28 days ago from his inbox and deleted
items. Backup on tape is taken every night, so this has skipped the tape
backup.
What I am asking is that is it possible to recover the email. the deletion
retention (days) is set to 7.
Please help.
Thanks.

Trouble joining PCs to Domain from Branch office through VPN (Cisc
I have an SBS 2000 server at the home office, a 2000 member server at the
branch office, the branch office has about 4 PCs, and when I try to join the
PCs to the domain, I get the following message: "The specified server cannot
perform the requested action".
What is mystifying is that one of the PCs a laptop has already been joined,
and works ok with no problems.
Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks
Don

Adding a second server
Hello: I currently have a single server office running SB Server 2000. On
that server I'm running terminal server as well as exchange server. The
server itself is a dell 1400sc, PIII 1.4 gig CPU. Our proprietary software
supplier has talked us into an upgrade of their software and the current
server will just barely cut the specs plus I have to run sql server for the
new upgrade of the software. So I'd like to post my idea how to deal with
this and get some feedback from this great group.
First I would keep my current SBServer 2000 acting as the DC and running
exchange. From what I've read Exchange must be on the DC? I would buy a new
server with server 2003 and set that up to run the program we are upgrading
along with sql server. Finally I thought I'd take a green box and use it for
terminal server.
I'm not sure if I can do this last step. I think I've read the TS must
remain on the DC so help here would be much appreciated. I think/hope I've
written things out clearly.
My reason for adding a new server and keeping the old is to make the change
over easy. I think the toughest part would be setting up a new DC and doing
all the transfers such as exchange and AD.
Well thank you in advance. Chris Tag: SP1 Media Gotchas?? Tag: 177523

Outlook appointment change is not updating until taken offline / put online again
Only got one user with this problem - they change the subject of an
appointment in Outlook (running in Cached Exchange mode) while
connected to the server. The calendar exists in Public Folders.
When they save & close the appointment, their change isn't reflected on
the main calendar view (one day per screen).
If you open the appointment up, their change shows correctly in the
subject line.
If you change folders, or close & restart Outlook, this situation
continues. Only by using the File > Work Offline option to take it
offline and then bring it back online does the change then update on
the main display.
On one occasion I did this, when it came back online and opened the
appointment, it actually said 'you have multiple versions of this
appointment - which do you want to keep, the current or previous
version?' I couldn't find this documented anywhere at the time, and
now cannot replicate that message.
However, all I really want is for items to update without any user
intervention!
Any ideas?
Cheers

trust relationship between computer and domain
hi:
i run win2k sbs which users logon to domain and they're by default
"restricted users" on their own computers.
i need to grand a laptop user access rights to change lan setting so that he
can change the ip settings while he's at different locations. so i now try
to set him up as power user. i logged onto the laptop as an administrator
and tried to add the user to the power user group; but i received the error
message:
"The user could not be added because the following error has occurred:
The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain
failed."
what does it mean? i can see this laptop from the server side but i don't
see anyway to "trust" this laptop?
thanks in advance,

SBS2K and Outlook 2002
Hello,
I am in a bit of a quandary. Lately, my pop3 client, Outlook 2002, is
acting funky. I have two accounts on the pc, the 1st account is MS
Exchange, the 2nd, a pop3 account where the incoming server is the
ISP's pop server, and the outgoing server is the exchange server.
A user will request email and "exchange" task will complete but pop3
mail won't come in. The task won't complete. If you look at the
details, Outlook shows 70 Microsoft Exchange tasks but the sending and
receiving of pop mail hangs, eventually I'll have to cancel it out or
I'll get a timeout message that the ISPs' pop mail did not respond.
But it works fine with Outlook Express.
It seems to be related that it is very slow copying files from the
domain server to the XP PC. Slower than usual.
Don't know if upgrading to gigabit Ethernet will help.
For example, today, Outlook said the task was 80% complete, and then
it dropped to 50%. I looked at the webmail provided by the ISP and
noticed that there was no pop mail go get.
Any tips would be appreciated. This started to happen. The only
solution so far is to reboot the pc.
Thanks in advance,

SBS 2003 Firewall does not start
The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) fails to start
Automatically. When an attempt is made to start the service the error
message is "Could not start Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing
(ICS) service on Local Computer. Error 170: request resource is in use."
The System Event log shows the follow entry:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: ipnathlp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 32009
Date: 5/1/2006
Time: 3:35:39 PM
User: N/A
Description:
The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service could not
start because another program or service is running that might use the
network address translation component (Ipnat.sys). This can occur when
Routing and Remote Access is enabled. If this is the case, you must disable
Routing and Remote Access before the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection
Sharing (ICS) service can start.
