Hello,

SBS2K. I have a few distribution groups on my server for different
departments (along with the default group that SBS creates that include
everyone). The problem is that people from the outside world are sending
messages to these groups and we are getting mass spam to them.

These groups only need to be used in house. Is there any way that I can
close these addresses to the outside world?

Thanks,

Chris

>Hello,
Depending on how many spam messages you get, you might
try adding the offending domaind in your SMTP filter
using Exchange System Manager. I do this as preliminary
measure before my anti-spam product kicks in. Here's the

Kevin,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have had that thought before. Actually, many of
the messages are not from spam domains, hence I don't want to block out the
entire domains. I would just rather not allow people to mail to that
address.

Warning! I have not tested this suggestion.

Remove the external SMTP address for the distribution group. You will have
to make sure that you don't have anything running on your system (e.g.,
BackupExec success/failure emails) that sends emails to the group using the
external address.

Use the SBS Administrator Console and select "Distribution Groups". Hilite a
desired group and right-click to get to Properties. Look at the E-mail
Addresses tab and remove the SMTP address for <group>@<domain>.com.

Joe,

Thanks for the suggestion, but it will not let you delete the default SMTP
address. I don't know why though. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Chris

Here's what you do in the address tab there are 2 smtp addresses.
Set the one with .local as the default, then delete the .domainname.

At the Bottom uncheck the checkbox "automatically update email addresses
based on recipient policy."

Have fun

Thanks for the reply. When I read your message, I was sure that would work.
It seems so simple. Why didn't I think of that. It worked like a champ.

Thanks,

Chris

I know that, you know that, Microsoft knows that, the MVPs know that, people
who hang out here regularly know that, etc.

Still doesn't stop someone coming along every month or so and re-opening the
debate because they a) haven't understood what has been said before or b)
believe they know better...

Just making the point that it's another good reason not to use the
example.com approach.
