 - Access two separate and different domains/active directories with same work station Is there any way to connect work stations that are memebers on one domain/active directory to another domain, that has a different name and active directory? I have one server that is W2K SBS (allows only one domain) and the other server W2K Server (allows multiple domains - we have one!).  - Removing Router from Network? I'm writing about an SBS 2000 server which is having slow VPN connection speeds and am considering a hardware change. I have written about my problems earlier (VPN Sloooow). Although I received good feedback I haven't seen any improvement in speeds. I'd like any suggestions on whether the hardware change will improve the speed and how to implement the change. The current network is using a 192K SDSL connection. (When we originally set up the network we had ADSL on a Verizon line with no static IP. That's why we installed the router.) DSL WAN: 155.x.x.x DSL LAN: 216.x.x.111 Linksys WAN: 216.x.x.112 Linksys LAN: 192.168.16.99 SBS WAN: 192.168.16.1 SBS LAN: 192.168.1.2 I am considering removing the Linksys router, putting the SBS server on the 'net'. The Linksys is the BEFSX41. Given the slow speeds of the VPN we are currently having, I'm wondering if the router is causing the problems. The ISP tech said that this could be causing the problem. Questions: - Can anyone confirm or reject my suspicions about the router? Is it likely that removing it will speed up the VPN traffic? - Would the SBS server be safe with a public address? I'm feeling a bit cautious here. We have ISA.  - ISA removal from SBS2000 Hi there. Is it possible to later remove ISA server 2000 from a productive installation of SBS2000. The firewall should be swaped to a dedicated server for security reasons and i'd like to get rid of the ISA overhead on SBS. Also the "external" network card should be removed and the SBS2000 should furtheron act as a server in the internal network only. What is the best-practive and are there experiences?  - Backup Wizard SBS2003 my backups keep failing becuase the antivirus software does not allow access to certain folders within my program files. is there a way to manually exlcude these directories as the backup wizard wont allow me to as they are suposedly directories required to do a system restore (i assume because they are in the program files directory). possibly somewhere in the registry or something???  - Receiving mail Hi We have an SBS2000 connected by dial up to an ISP. All mail that is received is directed to my mail box. Until last week this was working fine. In preparation for getting a broadband connection I installed a second network card last week. Since then no mail has been coming through to my inbox. Exchange seems to be receiving it from the ISP and deleting the messages from the ISP server. There are no entries in the transaction message tracking centre. There are also no NDR's.  - SBS 2000 WAN and DNS Hi, I have the following SBS2000 setup; 2 sites connected by 2mb link, 15 hosts using 2k pro & XP Pro. site A has SBS server and DHCP superscope configured to serve site B clients and all works fine apart from site B hosts not dynamically registering with DNS. Site A no problem, i have imagined that if site A was updating DNS ok then site B should also. ROuters have DHCP forwading enabled (or DHCP) wouldnt work for site B, is there something i have missed?  - SBS 2003 and POP3 Remote Access I have a couple of remote users that need to access their Exchange e-mail boxes stored on the SBS 2003 using their e-mail clients from outside the company They have Outlook 2003, which I have setup a POP3 e-mail account with the IP address of the SBS 2003 Serveras the POP3 & SMTP Server and checked the SPA and SSL boxes for Security communication, but I get an error message when sending a Test Message that "Server was not found" ..  - Mail question Our company has 5 pc's and two printers and a scanner. We use SBS2k and also exchange 2002. We are connected to the Interent via a BB modem which is connected to our second network card on the server. When users logon to the network and open their outlook they have to click send/receive in order to get their mail. There is also NO ''new mail has arrived'' notification when a user has his/her outlook opened and receives a new email message.  - Dial up Entry wont disconnect. I have the settings on my modem to disconnect after 1 min of inactivity. This however is never schived, as there always seems to be small packets of data that seem to be sent back and forth within 1 min. The traffic is very small and does not upset the network at all - the only problem being that a disconnect never occurs. This has been happeing since ugrading to SBS2K SP1a.  - Backup Exec error message related to disabling and then removing user Hi folks, I inherited an SBS a few days ago. I had to disable the previous tech's account, followed by an ex employee that had been lingering in the system. I'm accustomed to disabling accounts, but the following morning I recieved an error message in the backup log due to the mailboxes of the two people that I disabled. I Googled around and saw that a few people recommended deleting these accounts, which I did. The following morning I still had error messages relating to these two people. The message is in the exchange portion of the backup log and basically indicates that the mailboxes cannot be found. What is the correct way to go about this? Thanks!  - VPN works internaly but not external Just installed the linksys BEFSR41 router and upgraded firmware to newest version 1.04.17. It is being used to provide broadband service to one standalone PC on the 192.168.1.x LAN and a Microsoft SBS 2000 server which is serving as a vpn server (at 192.168.1.2). Both of these computers are plugged directly into the back of the router with no other pcs hooked up on that side of the network. I can establish a vpn connection from the standalone pc to the server so I know my message is getting passed through the router an into the server and that the server is configured correctly. However, when I attempt to use the internet side address of the router I can not establish a connection. I have tried enabling all three vpn protocols (IPSec Passthrough, PPPoE Passthrough & PPTP Passthrough), enabling the dmz with forwarding to my server (@ 192.168.1.2), port forwarding 1723 to 192.168.1.2 etc. I also tried from a dial up connection and another off site cable based pc just to make sure the problem was not due to being on the same portion of the network. Do you have any suggestions? I've read where protocol 47 needs to be opened up. Since I don't see anything that explicitly opens this up I'm assuming the vpn enable selections do that for me.  - SBS 2003 will not forward DNS Clients nor the server will resolve websites, or ping outside of the network. POP email and Exchange are working fine. 1 nic card, pix firewall. IF i place other dns entries in a client, than the server, it works fine. there seems to be an old NIC still installed somewhere that does not exsist. Totally lost. Help.  - intrusion detected Hi! I posted before about receiving an email warning stating that an intrusion was detected on our 'external nic's ip'. Susan responded that sometimes it is just a choke (or something like that). The message in the email is: ISA Server Name: myservername ISA Server detected an all port scan attack from Internet Protocol (IP) address my.external.nic.number. For more information about his event, see ISA Server Help. There is no events in the event log, but I get the email everytime someone (so far, all authorized) connects vpn. Any thoughts?  - Disabling Remote Desktop Connection on SBS ISA server Hi folks, I just inherited an SBS 2000 and it has been awhile since I supported ISA. I can access this server remotely using RDC from my home office to the public ip of the server. Also, I can VPN to the public ip of the server from my home office and then initialize RDC. My goal is to turn off the direct RDC (close 1389 port), and only have it available through a VPN. This should be more secure, but I'm not ISA server savy enough to know how to do it, and I'm wondering if it may be a SBS wizard deal. Thanks for any help!  - Cannot ping internal server We have two servers, each with their own LAN and NIC ranges. When I try to ping NIC on the other server or the server itself, I cannot ping them. I get the message back that "request timed out" or "Host not available" Do I have to add the other server and workstation NIC IP addresses to the LAT table I can ping outside the LAN - WAN, without any problems I also am trying to use the Net Use command. It works on a workstation that is on the domain that it is authenticated on, but will not work from the workstation that is log on to the other server.  - VPN Names resolution thing Hi A bit of an issue or possibly a NSNE (Non Scheduled Network Event) I have managed to connect our remote office (4PCs one of which has RAID+tape backup and is used as a local fileserver) to our main office using ADSL (Vigor router to SBS2000 using PPTP) all works fine users can log on / use Outlook etc. from remote office and in "Network places" they can see all of the users in the remote office and the SBS server but no computers in the main office. this is not really a problem as they should not need to . However in the main office if you look in "Network places" non of the remote office computers are visible and it would be usefull to have access to the file server in the remote office the computer can be pinged and if i type \\<computername>\ i get a listing but i cannot map it using the SBS script as i get the message "Error 67" not found Any ideas how to get them to display in "network places"?  - Need a good Remote Access Solution for new client NOTE: I did *not* do the initial setup on this server. I just got this new client, SBS 2003 Hardware: Dell Server Clients: All XP Remote Users: 5-9 Internet: SBS Yahoo! DSL -5 static IPs, PPPoE is mandatory NOTE: For some reason the IP they gave me for the gateway is assigned to the router. I tried to reconfigure the router to take a static IP WITHOUT the PPPoE and it did not work. SBC said it won't work that way. Not sure how to make use of the add'l IPs. I think I could map from the command line using the Efficient Network modem, but am clueless how to do that. -Efficient Network DSL Modem -Linksys DSL/Router (BEFSR41) Current solution: Remote user uses Remote Desktop Connection (Terminal Services) to access a SINGLE PUBLIC IP ADDRESS that is assigned to the Linksys Router. I don't know why they did not multi-home the server, it has two network cards in it. Router Config (Port Range Forwarding) Application - Start - End - Protocol - IP Address USER1 3390 3390 Both 192.168.1.3 USER2 3391 3391 Both 192.168.1.4 USER3 3392 3392 Both 192.168.1.5 ect. Looking at the router/RAS port assigment I do see that TWO users are using VPN. Those are probably the two remote users in a different state with laptops and no computer in the main office. 2. The president of the company does not like the fact that when the remote user logs in he/she is using their company computer. I think he is thinking that all remote users must have a dedicated computer in the main office. I DID NOT SET THIS UP! 3. Remote users cannot print to local printers -HP PhotoSmart 1215 -HP 7350 I explain that when a terminal service connection is established that the server will attempt to add the local printer. In some cases this is not possible due to the type of printer. I don't want to tell the president he must get a second printer or can't print locally. I need a workaround for this. 4. I want to setup a Windows Server - Terminal Server for the remote users so they can run their applications on the server. I know it is not good to run the SBS TS in app. mode (some of my clients do it anyway). This would eliminate the need for anyone to have to access their computer remotely, and all the files are on the server anyway and the drive will be mapped when they logon. I have setup many SBS servers and preferred a multihomed server with a public IP address and no hardware firewall. I have setup the SBS with Sonicwall + VPN and using the router to forward traffic on Port 25 to the SBS Server. I just wanted some feedback on this config and what I should do to fix these problems.  - ISA SMTP Filter In the past I've had moderate success with the ISA server SMTP filter, but now I'm stuck. I'm suddenly getting a load of far-east spam. It's sent through compromised machines in North America and Europe; many of which must be new so they haven't yet been listed by the DNSbls that I use and thus slip past ORFEE. The one thing they all seem to have in common is that they all contain the text "hinet.net" at some point, either in the body of the message, or in a forged address in the "from" or "to" fields. I have no need at all to receive legitimate mail from anybody on hinet.net so I'd like to filter it out. However, nothing I've tried so far seems to work. I've tried: hinet.net hinet *hinet.net* as keywords but with absolutely no success so far. You are using SMTP or POP3? If SMTP... are you sure your MX records are
correct? Post the domain if you want us to check it.
