    - Advanced SBS Course - Input and Comments With 2395A right around the corner I was wondering what people interest would be in a similarly written Advanced course for SBS and what you would like to see in such a course. I know this is kind of hard to say since no one has seen 2395A yet? The reason I'm conducting this informal poll is because the powers to be at Microsoft said that they would look into and do an Advanced course if the market and want is there.     - SBS 4.X to SBS2K - Exchange question I plan on replacing an existing server with a new one and upgrade the existing SBS 4 with Exchange 5.5 to SBS2K. My plan is to export all the mailboxes using ExMerge. Then when I get SBS2K all setup, then ExMerge all the mailboxes back into Exchange 2000. This seems to be the recommended practice and I agree with this strategy. My question is; When the users start replying to other users within the same W2K domain, will it be delivered? I ask because usually the x.400 and other email settings are different between E5.5 and E2K. Or do they have to reply but choose the user out of the GAL? I know SBS comes with 5 CAL's but there are 15 clients on the network and all are currently licensed with Server 2000 CAL's.     - permissions Hi I am struggling with permissions problem. I have created a user called tom. tom is a member of a group called employee. I want tom to have no access to c drive and access to only one file on d drive which is in a directory on d drive. Tom's "member of" properties only lists him as a member of domain users/users and the employee group. I cannot remove the domain users group from his "member of" properties. What if i give the employee group access to c drive with only list permissions and access to d drive with list permissions to the folder and write/modify/read access to the file? There is just one problem. The default permissions for c drive and d drive is everyone full control. How does this effect the permissions i set for the employee group on the same folder. Does the everyone group permissions override everything and if so, what if I set deny everything on C drive and deny everything on d drive except that file? How can i get around this issue?     - HELP!! Users get errors opening Word Docs & Saving Hello All, I have a problem. I recently moved a small organization from SBS 4.5 to SBS 2K. I did a clean install on a new machine. I wasn't worried about migrating users or their exchange data or pushing shared folders & their permissions. So I simply backed everything up that they would need to tape backup and removeable HDD's. Now that the new server is up and running everyone is online and working and using ISA and exchange, however all of my users (6) complain every day that when they open a word document from a shared folder and they try to save it after making modifications they get a slew of different errors. Sometimes they are told to save to a different file name, other times they get an out of memory error cannot safe the file to this volume. and other times it just won't allow them to save because of permissions problems. I have reset permissions on the share, it is on a partition on the second physical drive and I have turned off the trend micro office scan real time scanner thinking it was slowing access times to the server. I also upgraded the server to 1.2 gigs of ecc sdram thinking 2K & exchange were hogging up the ram which it seems every time I look the ram is maxed out but I am stumped.     - VPN through Linksys router into SBS I'd like to make a VPN connection from my home computer to the server at work. VPN will go through a Linksys router sitting between the internet and my home computer. I noticed in the instructions it states that VPN's that use IPSec and AH (Authentication Header known as protocol 51) are incompatible with the router. AH has limitations due to occasional incompatibility with the NAT standard. Can anyone shed any light on this - I've used VPN in the past through a different router and never had any problems but I can't recall ever hearing anything about AH.     - running chkdsk on mirrored drives I belive one of my mirrored drives has a bad block. I want to run chkdsk /r to repair the damage. Since the drives are mirrored, when I run the command, which drive will get checked? If I break the mirror how do I specify the second drive? Will it have a letter?     - OT: telnet Hi, I recently had to do some network troubleshooting and learned a little about telnet (sorry if my questions are dumb, I'm having a little trouble figuring out some basics) I was given this link to help test if port 25 was open. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en- us;153119 I was able to send an email via telnet but have a couple fo questions. After telnetting to port 25, I noticed the telnet commands (close, set, etc) no longer worked. Why? Is this because once I entered the port I was no longer telnetting but was using the smtp protocol? I also noticed I could not see what I was typing (I was using the command shell). Is there away to toggle some function so I can see the text? If I telnetted to port 80, nothing would happen until I hit enter twice, this would cause the delivery of a 404 html page (displayed in the command shell). Once again, after telnetting to port 80, none of the telnet commands worked. So obviously I was connecting to the web server but it's not clear what was going on. If I went to a known closed port, I would get a could not connect message. (which is good) I'm just confused on what you can do via telnet besides access open ports. I have a copy of basic commands etc but I'm missign a few fundamentals. Any explination on what was happening would be very benificial. Thanks Tag: Lost CD Tag: 128992

    - Web Permissions I have a SBS 2K with FrontPage installed. Server extensions are installed. I cannnot add a web page as I always get "this action requires end-user permission avserver:80." Using administravtive privelages does not work. It asks over and over for the same info. I've reset permisisons on iis to everyone and that hasn't helped.     - Help! Strange problems in AD, Exchange Okay this is going to be a bit winded, just to get as much information as I can in this first post. Without going into the details, I recently went thru a migration process to get SBS2K installed on another PC using the NT4 BDC -> PDC and Win2K server upgrade, and transferring the 5 FSMO roles. I'm going to have to do this process again because I have to get SBS2K back on the original PC after upgrading the hardware. I left the "temp" DC running (call it "DCTemp") without demoting it after transferring the roles. Here's some of the steps that may be relevant to my problem (to the best of my recollection and notes from the install): - After transferring the roles onto the SBS PC, I ran SBS setup without Exchange (no ISA either), and then installed Exchange 5.5 with SP3 (it failed the first time thru, then I did a manual removal of Exchange 5.5, and then did Q309484 before setup of 5.5 again). I had a heck of a time trying to get ISINTEG -patch to work, even going thru ESEUTIL on them several times (on a 12 GB priv.edb no less), before it finally restored and Exchange 5.5 SP3 was up and running (the only other problem was the LDAP ports conflicting, but that was easily resolved). I also had to do a directory export from the Exchange 5.5, and reimport back into Exchange Administrator on the SBS2K but I finally could log in from a workstation and send mail (internally), use public folders working, etc. - Next was the inplace upgrade to Exchange 2000, I got an error during the installation process and it aborted near the end, saying it couldn't install the Exchange MMC snap-in. I noticed that the databases "seemed" to have been upgraded to Exchange 2000 (with the appropriate STM files for priv and pub). I then tried to reinstall Exchange 2000 again, but this time it told me that setup couldn't continue without removing the IMC from Exchange. I couldn't get in Exchange Administrator, and the System Manager was missing so there was no way to do this that I knew of. - So, I went back to an image I made after transferring the FSMO roles, just before the SBS setup. I got an error in the event logs about AD not having the same information, but it seemed to take the "newer" information from DCTemp fine. - At this point (from the image), I ran the SBS setup (at first without Exchange 2000 and ISA), then ran the Exchange 2000 setup with the /disasterrecovery switch. I had already renamed the directory where it used to be, and after setup, I moved the priv.edb, priv.stm, pub.edb and pub.stm files along with the logs (essentially the whole mdbdata dir) back, and mounted the stores. Okay, life is good at this point (or seems to be), as Exchange 2000 is officially up and I could log in from a workstation and use the services. - Next came the SPs, and I applied Win2K SP4 first, then Exchange SP3. Ouch! I got TONS of problems after reboot (MSExchange Event IDs 5000, 1121 with error code 0x80004005, MSExchangeMTA Event ID 125, MSExchangeSA Event IDs 9098 and 9175, etc etc.). I tried a few things from some KBs but nothing seemed to work. The IS simply refused to start, and thus I couldn't mount the stores. - I then proceeded to reinstall Exchange 2000 from the SBS setup, and got the error "Setup detected another version, service pack needs to be reapplied" or something like that. I then clicked Yes to all the files that needed to overwrite the newer ones installed by SP3 (what a pain this was, I wish there was a "Yes to All" option instead of the Yes, No, No to All that is available). Setup completed BUT it said there were some problems with Active Directory (no details). I rebooted and (phew) Exchange was working again. - I went ahead and installed the TM C/S/M suite but noticed that ScanMail wasn't working (couldn't load the databases when I went into the management console). I'm going to attribute this to Exchange not being up to SP3, but it may be related. Okay, now that I've laid the groundwork, here are the problems I'm noticing: - DCTemp and SBS AD seems to be out of sync. I noticed this when a user came to me and said his account was locked out - AD Users & Computers on SBS looked fine, but on DCTemp the account was locked out. Both PCs have been running long enough for things to propagate and there are a few other inconsistencies that make me believe the replication is fubared. - I used to have an "Everyone" group in Exchange 5.5, but that didn't seem to carry over. When I try to recreate this, I get a "user already exists", but I can't find it anywhere in AD (even with the find feature). - I also can't create any NEW users on AD on the SBS with either the Add Users Wizard or from AD. I have to go create the new user in DCTemp (it seem to replicate okay to SBS, but I can't create mailboxes in AD from DCTemp). - Using the Migrate Users Wizard, I tried to give the user a mailbox - it seems to work but in System Manager, the mailbox simply isn't there. AD lists the user as having an email address, but I'm not sure where the mail goes. So.. What steps should I take at this point? Are there general troubleshooting utilities that I can run to check AD and Exchange? I'm not sure if NTDSUTIL is useful at this point because things "seem" to work and the database doesnt seem corrupted. Or should I try a reinstall from SBS setup again? I'm going to do another setup on the old SBS 4.5 PC, after doing some hardware upgrade. If I just leave the current SBS running as is, and do another FSMO roles tranfer, and do the SBS setup on the final hardware, with an Exchange 2000 database forklift, should life be fine? Or should I really look into fixing the above problems first? Just a bit Frustrated.. (especially after the weekend copying over the Exchange databases, and defraging, checking integrity, defraging, recopying, defraging, etc. which took 15+ hours). Any insights would be appreciated. Hello, On several XP clients, I am noticing that when a user creates a new folder on a shared drive on the SBS2000 server, the window behavior is different. Before 1. Create a new folder 2. The pc jumps to the NEW FOLDER, it is highlighted in blue, and the user types in the new name Now 1. Create a new folder 2. Nothing happens 3. You have to scroll down 4. The NEW FOLDER was created 5.     - Outgoing SMTP Mail Please help. I am having a problem setting up a clients new SBS2000 install. Incoming mail is recieved via the popconnector which gets mail from an ISP pop account. This works ok. Outgoing mail is setup via the SMTP connector to send mail via the internet providers SMTP server (smtp.bulldogdsl.com). I have entered the ISP SMTP server as a smart host as per the MS instructions. When a domain user/computer uses Outlook, email is recieved ok and when email is sent to an internet address everything seems to work fine but the receipient never gets the message. However, no NDR is recieved by the sender and the email queues do not show any mail waiting to go. What am I doing wrong? I can ping the smtp server of the ISP from the SBS2000 and I can telnet to it as well. Help!! Tag: Lost CD Tag: 128983

    - Add User Wizard not adding e-mail address SBS 2000, using To Do List to add a user (have done this many times before). User account is created but e-mail address is not -- at least not in the Admin Console or Exchange admin "Users" panes (yes, I've refreshed multiple times). This is upwards of 3 hours after creating the account (normally there is some lag but on the order of minutes). When I go to the Exchange admin console and look at my available Exchange tasks for this user, I have a "delete" and a "move" option but not an "add" option for an e-mail address, so I take it enough configuration has taken place that an e-mail address, etc. are being detected on some level (but aren't completing). No oddball characters in the username, or anything like that. Should be straightforward, like a dozen times before, but it's not working. I've deleted the account and tried to reinstantiate it twice already, and it doesn't make a difference. The e- mail information just never appears. Any ideas? Tag: Lost CD Tag: 128968

    - Microsoft Shared Fax Service I have set up the shared fax service on our office server. When I try to fax multiple sheets from an excel work book along with a cover page I have to do it two steps, it will pick up the cover page and the first selected worksheet the first time and fax them, then it will let me fax the last two sheets and a cover page.     - Exchange2000 help please After a back up restore of exchange, and a repair on the priv1 databases I have the following problem. 3 users out of 20 cannot receive email. They can send email ok. I can't see anything else wrong. I can see the emails in the default SMTP Virtual Server\queuses\ local delivery. They all have red dots on them. Any help will be most appreciated.     - Is Trend still the best Antivirus for SBS2000? Hi Does any one have a strong opinion about AV for SBS? It seemed that Trend was the favourite but now they have stopped the SBS package it seems there are less fans.... We have not actually used Trend here in the UK because they are so pig headed - it took weeks to get a straight answer from Trend or any Trend distributor, that they would not sell the SBS ver in the UK. And with various install issues cited and no demo version available we stayed away. We have used McAfee but they are less easy to setup on SBS. Currently we use Symantec Corp edition with or without Exchange support, it installs very well and works ok... just that the definitions seem slow to be updated and the last outbreaks caused us a little concern! hence a look at alternatives. Has anyone an opinion about GFI solutions? GFI software is really great but they don't seem to have an Exchange scanner. any thoughts / recommendations much appreciated Dan Tag: Lost CD Tag: 128947

    - DNS Problem. I have noticed that under the Forward Lookup Zones -> mydomain.local, in the right hand pain I can see all the machines on my domain. But I have got some entries in there that are old machines and laptops which have not been on my network for sometime.     - Group Policy Settings I am very new to Active Directory and Group Policy, so these questions are probably very basic. 1) I am setting up Group Policy on a new install of SBS. I apply my policy changes on the domain level. All policy changes are in effect when logging on to a client workstation. Also, when I login to the server as Administrator the same policies are in effect. How can I prevent this policy from being used when logging on to the server? An example of the problem this causes is I want to lock down the ability to modify network adapter settings. This works great when logged on a client machine, but when I logon to the server I need the ability to modify network settings. I tried to apply the policy settings at the "My Business" organization level, but they had no effect on the server or client. 2) I have figured out how to import Windows XP policy templates into AD. Changed the UI to classic start menu. I could not find an option to enable the quick launch toolbar by default though. Is this possible through GP? 3) How can I set a specific background picture?     - Help - Funnies on SBS box Over the last few days we have been having very strange things going on. Thursday to Friday there was a huge amount of upload on to the web. Friday in 20 hrs 1Gb!!! It turns out that I think something was running using port 25 coz as soon as I blocked port 25 all traffic stopped. It wasn't exchange from what I could see. No emails queued and nothing going on in the GFI MailSecurity mail monitor. I have scanned the server and all work stations for using CA eTrust and any other Trojan and virus product that I can find but nothing is detected. Sunday evening at 12:27 and then last night 12:17 the server crashes. It is turned off, no power etc.. When the server is rebooted the eventlog says that the server recovered from an unexpected shutdown at 12:27 and 12:17. I have today downloaded the GFI Network Scanner and it has found port 10,000 TCP open and running webmin. What is webmin and can I closed this!! As far a I know there are no services that should be running on this port. I can telnet and browse to this port, but get a number of strange characters.     - SBE 2000 Upgrade - Missing 4.5 disks. I am doing an upgrade for a company from SBS 4.5 to SBE 2000 and have bought the upgrade license and software for SBE 2000. However the company have misplaced their original 4.5 disks (not the license) which the 2000 install needs for the upgrade (Disk 1). It has 5 alias names such as pete@hard.com.au etc.etc. Notice that the domain names are different. Now, in exchange i have an internal domain setup. I also have got an internet domain registered as well. When i setup ICW do i put in the domain name yaka.com.au? Do i setup an account in AD for Snort, Pete and the other aliases? If i use yaka.com.au - exchange changes the alias user names smtp addresses to pete@yaka.com.au. Can i just create the alias smtp address and make it the primary? Will mail get to the account snort@yaka.com.au even though i have no account setup in exchange for it?     - Services stopping and no external mail being sent or received. I have an SBS2K server which has experienced the multiple Event 7031 errors. It seemed to happen after installing the KB832980 patch. At first it would stop after about 24 hours and need a reboot then after about a week it started happening every couple of hours. The symptoms are exactly as described in the Knowledge Base article316612. I've checked for signs of Nimda, Code red II and some other more recent viruses but can't find antything so I suspected a corrupt Metabase file and unistalled/reinstalled IIS and reinstalled Exchange as detailed in KB article 320202 but it's still happening. Next I created a new SMTP Virtual Server but when I stop the Default SMTP Server and start the new one I'm unable to send outgoing mail I get an undeliverable reply stating "A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients." I've compared the default and new SMTP VSs and they have exactly the same settings. Can anyone suggest how I can send mail through the new SMTP VS and if this doesn't solve the problem suggest what the next thing to check would be. Lester Bennett Tag: Lost CD Tag: 128885

    - Out of license errors (Event ID 202) Hi All, SBS 2000 server at one of our clients shows out of license errors (Event ID 202)in log. He has 15 licenses at the moment and there are NOT 15 users who uses the server locallay. He is also hosting a Terminal Server on a separate machine (with TS CAL licenses). W2k SP4 has been installed all over the network. The same error is reported for Exchange server (being hosted on the same SBS in log).     - More Exchange 2000 restore problems Hi Again, After my sp3 escapades, I have now restored back to SP1 and got the information stores mounted from backup. I now have the following strange problem which I am sure is a coincidence. All the mail has come into the server, but all the female users are not recieving mail. This is both internal and external. (has my server turned into a sexist pig). The users affected can send mail. I found the emails sent to them in the SMTP\Default SMTP Virtual Server\(local delivery). I can see the messages there, and they are also in the bad mail directory. So my questions are; 1) Why has this occured to only 4 users out of 20. 2) What do I need to look for, can't see anything in the event log? to resolve the issue and get them recieving mail.     - Exchange via Dialup I have SBE 2000 installed with Exchange and ISA on the same server. On the server I have an internal card and a dial up modem to an ISP (with static IP). I have configured the ISA server to dialup when a browser is opened and this works fine. However how do I configure the Exchange server to send and receive SMTP mail via the dialup connection? My ISP is Demon who detect when you are online and sends SMTP mail to the fixed dialup IP address. Any ideas or docs would be appreciated.     - SBS1a Exchange component will not install. Long story cut short : Trying to install NAI's Groupshield, which demands Exchange 2000 SP1 (or above). Exchange IS installed, Version 6 Build 4329.1 Service Pack 1, according to System Manager, and it's running without problems, yet the NAI refuses to see it. So tried SBSSP1a, which upgraded to Win2kSP4 just fine, but again, the Exchange SP3 patch therein refuses to "see" the existing installation.     - Router and VPN Connect to a server through a VPN connection and eveythings fine, when I place a Linksys router between the cable modem and computer VPN connects but now nothing works (can't see computers in Network Neighborhood, can't see shared folders, etc).     - Replacing LAN NIC instructions I want to replace my LAN side network interface card in my SBS2000 server. It's currently set up as 192.168.16.2. The old card is a 10Base-T and the new on is a 1GBit server card so I'm doing it for obvious reasons. My concern is that a simple power and card swap will not work as I believe Windows will retain the old card information based upon its MAC address. Has anyone done this change before? One is john@sew.com.au and the other is paul@sew.com.au. I have setup email accounts in exchange for john and paul but not Don. Do i need to do this? If so, how is this going to work as the domain name is different? When i was going through ICW, i put in the domain name as sew.com.au not new.com.au.     - Wow! - try out the Group Policy Management Console if you have XP Hopefully not preaching to the choir, but this is well worth trying out. Was slightly irritated to have to join XP Clients to my exclusively Win2k domain (wonderfully cheap IBM NetVistas), but some of these new MS tools that run on XPPro + Win2003 Svr (and can simultaneously deal with Win2K Server) are pretty neat. As I believe our US cousins say. Susan had mentioned it, so I downloaded the GPMC from www.microsoft.com/downloads and it is really feature packed (and pretty easy to use). The ability to generate cute reports on effective GP results is worth getting it for alone. If you've struggled with controlling GP settings, and have a spare XP Pro client, definitely try it out. There's also an 'adminpak' download (again Win2003 / XP Pro / Win2k Server) which has good Remote Desktop faciility.     - Backup exec / Compaq Insight manager problem Building HP ML350 G3 sbs server all build is fine no weird errors once these apps are installed still all OK. . . however on shutdown/restart to finalise the settings the server fails to shutdown properly it simply shutsdown the GUI as normal then goes to a blinking cursor 1/3 rd the way down a black screen. Can't CTRL+ALT+DELETE have to turn off and turn on again to boot normally. The event logs do not report the previous shutdown as unsucessful. We remove both these apps and this gets the server back to normal shutdown. It seems to be something to do with the Java component of both these apps. They both come with a different version.     - XP and SBS We want an XP workstation to be able to send email straight out to the internet using either Outlook or OE However we get "The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by your server" I have the firewall client set to show the little icon if it looses connection with the ISA server. When Outlook tries to send an email, I get the ' TCP/IP terminated ' error and the firewall icon pops up at the same time. XP workstation ipconfig/all points to the server 192.168.16.2 in events there are usernav event ID 1517 error about services running in the users name while tring to log off, memory was not released, try running services under a different account.     - hyperterminal cannot talk to router via com ports Hyperterminal is telling me it cannot access my com ports and to check port settings. My com ports are working for other devices. However, I need to communicate with my router and I prefer the command line interface that I get via hyperterminal. I haven't tried this connection in some time but it worked in the past. (The router is a Speedstream 5831. It also has a web-style interface but I've never been able to get it to work in SBS 2000 with two nics set up per the relevant MS Q docs.) Device Manager says I have an unidentified PCI serial port but I don't have a driver that Win2000 likes. Could this be the problem or does anyone have a similar experience?     - Shared fax and Terminal Services Hi I have an SBS2000 server setup and a Win2k Server setup for T/S access. I have installed the shared fax client on the server and sent test faxes from Word etc. However When I right click on an item and click send to mail recipient i get an error saying that outlook can not install the faxx32.dll . How do i go about getting a replacement CD for the
version of Outlook shipped with the Exchange 5.5
component of SBS. The original cd has been lost along
with the product key, we do have the original CDs and key
for the rest of SBS though.
