OK so I have a client that I picked up a few weeks ago. He was working
on a job about 6 monthe ago, then their client dropped the cause of lack
of money. Now the client is back, but my client has deleted all the
files from his server for that job.

He asked me if I could retrieve them, I said maybe...I had him download
this http://store.yahoo.com/rognerud/index.html and and use it, but
couldnt find those files that he needed.

I asked him about his backups and he said that he probally wouldnt have
it, since it was 6 months ago and it probally has been overwritten many
times by now.

Question A:

Is there a way that we can get these files back using a cheap program
mantioned above?

Question B:

What is a good backup routime scheme. I was thining about 1 full
monthly backup (1 tape per month) stored offsite. 1 full tape per week,
and run a differential on the non-full-backup days.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thank you

This depends on how much the drive has been used in between. Most probably:
No... after 6 months you can't do much.

I personally don't like differential backups... there is no need for them
and you are adding more points of failure to your recovery scenario.

-5 full backups each day per week (10 tapes / 2 weeks)
-1 full backup tape per week (weekends) stored offsite (4 tapes / 1 month)
-1 full backup tape per month (x tapes / x months) stored off site
-Cleaning tape every 2 weeks (or as desired/required)

This is just an example which you can modify to fit your needs.

I have great sucess with low level recovery s/w. I use Media Tools. It's
not cheap, but gets back almost anything.
