    - half-scan attack Hi! I've received a half-scan attack from this ip: 11.6.83.115. www.dnsstuff.com shows it being Japan-based. According to this site, I should block it on my server that they actually scanned for open ports. Should I do anything else? Is there an organization, like NIST, that tries to catch Internet abusers?     - SQL 2000 and SBS2k3 Standard I have a client that wants to upgrade windows 2k server to SBS2k3 STANDARD, which, from what I have read will work fine.     - Problems w/ New SBS 2003 Premium install Hello out there, I hope someone out there might have some pointers for me ... I've recently installed SBS 2003 Premium on a P4 1.7GHz, 1GB RAM, 40GB HDD (mirror set) box. Runs great except two issues: sharepoint doesn't work (getting errors in the Event viewer) and I can't join client PCs to the domain using the http://myhostname/connectcomputer browser based utility. 1. During the initial install, it appears that the MSDE was installed (for Sharepoint and SBS Monitoring) for users that didn't end up purchasing Premium (which comes with SQL 2000). The installation of the MSDE had an instance name of Sharepoint. I went to install SQL 2000 and it detected that MSDE was running and asked if I wanted to upgrade. I followed the upgrade process... When I was done, SQL 2000 was installed but it still had an instance name of Sharepoint ( \myhostname\sharepoint). The only thing here was that for some reason, I couldn't get the SQL Service Manager app to connect and start, the SQL Agent wouldn't start and the Enterprise Manager acted erratic. I was able to back up the STS_Config and STS_Myhostname_1 databases. I uninstalled the "upgraded" SQL server and reinstalled fresh. I restored the two databases and placed the appropriate security rights back on them. Everything looks fine, but the sharepoint admin can't connect to the database, "companyweb" doesn't work, and I have errors in the Application event viewer which show up every 5 minutes saying "#50070: Unable to connect to the database STS_Config on myhostname\SharePoint. Check the database connection information and make sure that the database server is running." Basically, the applications are still looking for an database server with an instance name of Sharepoint. Where do I change the settings for this so the apps will stop looking for this instance name? 2. Here's the other funky error I'm getting. I can manually join a client Win2K PC to the domain but if I try to add domain users to security groups on this local Win2K client PC, I get error messages that the domain doesn't exist or can't be contacted. I did some research and found that I need to go through the Server Management app and click Client Computers, then click Set Up Client Computers. The wizard then says to go to the client PC and go to http://myhostname/connectcomputer to finish the setup. If I do this, an OCX control is loaded, and a wizard starts. If I enter a valid domain username and password (using the admin account here ...) I get an error message saying "The list of users and computers could not be found on the server. Make sure that the Small Business Server network adapters are configured correctly." What is the deal here? I'm at a total loss. There is TCP connectivity, I can ping the server, I can browse the local network and see the other computers (sitting in their default workgroup...). I know physical connectivity is not an issue here. My only guess is that after the installation of the SBS 2003 software, I removed the original NIC and added two new ones. Was the first, primary NIC designated as a special network adapter?     - Recomendations for SBS2000 Antivirus w/ Exchange protection Simply put... I've had my SBS2000 up and working with 25 users (98se and XP) for over two years. Pretty much trouble free all along. I've never had any anitvirus running on the server. I belive now is the time with this never ending worm showing up in our mailboxes. There appears to be noone affected but we get lots from outside.     - SUS Hi Team I have a very puzzling problem. I have had quite a bit of experiance with Software Update Services and are using it on a few of the networks I look after but I am having one network which is causing me grief. I have setup a group policy which tells the clients where to get the updates (i.e their server) and scheduled the install for 12pm each day. None of the updates are being installed on the workstations. I have checked out the windows update.log file and it appears to be contacting the server and downloading a catalogue etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Daniel.     - XP, or Not XP....that is the question..... As noted here before, I have been trying to deploy an XP box on our SBS2K network with miserable success. When browsing network drives, the machine would just hang and hang. Sometimes browsing would be fast, other times the machine would actually go into the "not responding" mode. So I figure this new XP box is killing me and my network. Low and behold, I'm on the server yesterday trying to view some files and while navigating through directories suddenly I get the hourglass and have to stand and wait around a minute before my LOCAL drives and directories appear. What in blazes is going on here?! I'm at a record low as far as critical errors go in the event logs, all the patches ahve been applied (and I'm starting to suspect they may have been the culprit) and I', flat out at a loss to figure out why I'm having such huge delays in browsing. Before all the patches, the screens would pop as fast as I could double click, now there is at least a minimal wait on almost all machines. To the best of my knowledge, the DNS is fine, but if somebody cares to elaborate exactly what I should be looking at inthe DNS, I can double check it. Thanks.     - SBS 2003 & Outlook Web Access Requirements Caution, I'm an Exchange/OWA newbie... I have just purchased SBS 2003 and am interested in setting up OWA 2003. Although I have looked pretty thoroughly, I can't find definitive information (let alone a "step-by-step" or "how to") on the requirements or procedures. Can someone point me in the right direction? I realize that I need to have another computer in the DMZ as the back end server but I am unclear on the following: -To run OWA 2003, do I need to buy another copy of Server and/or Exchange for the back end server? Do they need to be 2003? -Do I need to purchase IAS for the back end server? -If the answers to the above are yes, are the requirements for OWA 2000, less imposing (i.e., IIS vs IAS) From the marketing, it sure seemed that setting up OWA was going to be a piece of cake as long as one had a DMZ and an extra box lying around.     - W32time and opening port NDP port 123 I have had a problem with two domain controllers in our network no longer replicating as the time difference between the two became more then than 5 minutes. On the operations master (also acting as the PDC) i want to setup W32time to use an external time server (time.micorosoft.com). W32time logs NTP server not responding and ShieldsUp! reports 123 as being closed on our network. So I guess the port 123 is blocked by our ISA server. How can I open this port to send receive?     - Email problem Hi, We are using SBS2000 with around 30 Windows 2000 Pro clients and around 2 WinXPP clients. Our Internet connection is Broadband via our ISP BTOpenworld. We send out emails via BTOpenworld's SMTP server. Furthermore, we pick up emails from a POP3 account at another ISP for our domain which is xxx.co.uk (example). BTOpenWorld have "Apparently" added our domain name 'xxx.co.uk' to their SMTP DNS server. The SBS's Domain is called: 'ABC' and the SBS machine name is called 'ABC-SBS'. Each user has a mailbox in Exchange, e.g. john@xxx.co.uk Problem: A user tried to send an email to a recipient and got an undeliverable (it is the correct email address!): -------------------------------------------- There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server. Please contact your system administrator. <abc-sbs.abc.local #5.5.0 smtp;554 <abc-sbs.abc.local>: Helo command rejected: Set a valid hostname> -------------------------------------------- Please can you tell me what the problem is? EMails to other recipeints are OK, but this particular recipeint is causing a problem by us getting undelierables with the message above. Any comments and suggestions will be appreciated.     - SBS2K3 - Initial Install Fails Hi All I can't seem to get past the 13 Min to go point in an initial install of 2K3. It is stopping ( and cycling over and over) at the "Registering Components" section I have tried killing the machine, to re-start. But this just sends it back to the start I would now like to completely format the HDD again and start from scratch, but I no longer am able to boot from CD as it automatically launches the previous install.     - How to allow inbound mail from external domain but refuse outbound mail to same domain? [SBS2K] How can I allow inbound mail from a specific domain whilst blocking outbound to the same domain? My problem is that I am implementing Trend Scanmail E-manger Anti-spam (part of the new CSM-SMS suite) and I need to be able to notify some recipients, i.e. upper management, when a spam mail is received (so that they can retrieve it if it has been wrongly identified). However, some mail from mailing lists (e.g. sbs2k@yahoogroups.com) is being blocked by Emanager. Because I am notifying the recipient a message is sent back to the mailing list! How can I deal with mailing lists properly when using Trend E-manager antispam?     - Hostname Issues with Win 95 Client (Ping) Hi - having a bit of problem with my win95 (urgh!) clients... The Setup: We have a sbs2000 multihomed server with a slightly odd pair of Ip addresses (not setup by us) The internal IP is 111.111.111.150 with subnet 255.255.0.0 The external is 10.0.0.11 subnet 255.0.0.0 And no, i haven't got that wrong.... The external address goes to a firewall - which is why it is a 10.0.0.11 and not a "proper" external IP. (please excuse my improper use of terminology...) We have ISA running on the server, as well as exchange, and it is a domain controller and DNS Server (like most SBS boxes i presume) The problem: If a win95 client pings the server it will occasionally resolve to 10.0.0.10 and other times resolve to 111.111.111.150. This seems to be causing some problems with MS Outlook trying to connect to exchange - it should just resolve to the internal address (111.111.111.150). We have win98 and winxp clients on the network too, and these seem unaffected. For the moment I'm looking at editing the lmhosts file - please correct me if there's a better (server-side?) fix.     - SBS2k, VERITAS 9, Backup Exec SQL Svr Backup I feel like a beginner at times and I have a basic question that perhaps you've run across in the past. Using Veritas 9.0 to backup an SBS2K server. Looked at the backup "selections" and noticed that "Microsoft SQL Server "BKUPEXEC" shows up in the list underneath the server, and there is a "/" blue diagonal in the box stating that this is selected to be backed up. But when I look at the job history, there are 0 files, 0 folders in this set. Have another imaging program that also uses MSDE and this, too, is listed in the selections but no files or folders are backed up. What am I missing? I know the files are getting backed up.     - Put Server WAN on Public IP Address? I'm considering putting the server's WAN NIC onto the public IP address we heve registered. I'm concerned though, that this will allow hackers into the server. We are using Excange SMTP mail and are running 2-3 VPN connections into the office.     - ADSL Router for SBS2k Hi all, Just looking for any recommendations for a requirement we have: SBS2k - configured with 2 x NIC - ADSL on external NIC - Router and Modem presently We're having some issues which we suspect are the Router and are investigating alternatives. Requirements are noted below: 1] Either a Router/Modem combination or Router with in-built connection to ADLS line 2] Router must have capability for VPN termination on-board [we have demo equipment on the external side of our SBS box that needs to be available for demo to non-domain users] - therefore these users will VPN onto the Broadband Router to access the demo kit 3] Remote LAN users will set-up a primary VPN to the Broadband Router with a secondary VPN tunnel through this primary VPN and onto the SBS box's external NIC If anyone has implemented such a solution or could recommend either a Router/Modem or Router with ADSL connection on-board, this would be appreciated. I have set the DNS locally & they log on quickly but in normal use seem slow over the Lan, if you take them off the Lan then they run at full speed. Help! I've followed the instructions below: However, users who choose not to change their passwords when the Password Change Notification message appears (by clicking No) are logged on with their old passwords and then can change their passwords. This system behavior occurs when the Everyone group hasn't been granted the Change Password right on the user object. Users can't change their passwords over the null session connection (anonymous logon relies on the Everyone group to carry out this action) established between the workstation and a domain controller. Instead, an authenticated session is required to change a password (i.e., users must be logged on to change their passwords).To change the permissions setting for the Everyone group, take the following steps: 1. Start the AD Users and Computers snap-in (Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, Active Directory Users and Computers). 2. Select the View menu and enable Advanced Features. 3. Right-click the container hosting the user object to which you want to grant the Change Password right (e.g., Users), then click Properties. 4. Select the Security tab. Ensure that the Everyone group is listed in the Name box. If it isn't, click Advanced, then add the Everyone group to the list from the Advanced Access Control Settings dialog box.     - Old web page keeps showing up Company web site is hosted externally and is currently under going remodeling. When it is accessed externally it displays that the site is under reconstruction. The problem is when accessed from internally the old web page shows up. I have stopped the web proxy serv, deleted the *.cdat file in the urlcache folder, restarted web proxy numerous times but still shows old site page. I have rebooted server & at least one workstation, still broke. Deleted all cookies & temp internet files from server and flushed dns. What else should I check?     - SMTP Relay problems I have an application on each workstation that needs to send SMTP Email. I thought that I would be able to just enter the name of the SBS Server as the SMTP Server. What is happening is that any message that is addressed outside of the SBS Domain is just lost. I donot recieve any error messages, the message just never arrives. I have also tested this using outlook express on both a workstation and on the server.     - SBS V4.0 I have got involved with a company who have SBS sever V4 running. Budgetry constraints mean they cannot upgrade till later in the year, so i will have to do what I can till then. They have had broadband installed will I be able to configure the proxy server to run via a BB modem connected to a 2nd nic or will I have to bypass proxy server.     - Not sure where to start (Terminal Server) Hi, We are running a SBS2000 network with an attached Win2k server. We need to temporarily set up this seperate win2k server to allow terminal server (we have a 3rd party contractor who needs access to the server from outside our network.)     - Uninstallign ISA and one NIC Has anyone uninstalled ISA and ran the SBS 2000 with one NIC. ISA is causing me problem with the Web proxy always crashing. On the phone with MS and they make me clear the cache and bypass the service from the cleints but a week later it crashes. Any insight would be great.     - SBS 2003 OWA Calendar not working I have recently set up a new SBS 2003 server behind a firewall and have configured port forwarding to enable access to Outlook Web Access from the Internet. Users are able to connect and log in OK and get to their mailbox, and the Basic version works fine. But the premium version calendar does not work at all, we are just getting a "View Updating" hourglass which never times out or gives an error message. This does not happen if we access OWA from the browser on the server itself on a Remote Desktop Session but still does not work if we connect via VPN to the Server directly, rather than through port forwarding. Either there is some problem with the firewall, I have not enabled enough ports or there is something on the client Machines (Windows XP Pro running Outlook 2000) that is stopping it working. I am really hoping that someone has a solution for this as we were hoping to use OWA at remote sites to avoid the complexity of setting up VPN and direct client connections. Any ideas appreciated.     - Exchange Restore Not Working! I get the following message when trying to restore my Exchange Information Store. I get the following message. The specified server is not a Microsoft Exchange Server or its Microsoft Exchange Services are not started restore. All the services are still running on the original machine.     - POP3 Connector SBS2000 Help! We have a SBS2000 server with the MS POP3 Connector fetching e-mail from our ISP (We connect via a router and ADSL).     - SBS2003-Messed up profile copy G'day, I was called in to help fix a blown SBS2003 Installation. As the 4th person called in, they have allready really messed things up. Somebody set them up with a home gateway router and only one NIC in the server and who knows how they answered the install wizatrd. They tried to join the PC's to the domain but didn't realize what a computer name is or what a user is. Quite a mess since they did this same abortive domain join on 4 of 5 clients. I have added a second NIC and re-run server setup. Joined the one pc they didn't screw up. I absolutely love the new profile copy routine! It is just fantastic and something sorely missed in SBS2000. Anyhow, on the "bad" clients, the profile copy routing "never ran" according to the user. I do see where 2 temporary and sparcely populated profiles with __sbs__ type names were created on each of these PC's. When I try to re-run the web-based profile copy routine it will not let me, says the profile permissions must be changed to allow access. I open up all permissions on the old profile and am logged in as administrator, no help. I am thinking of disjoing the domain (go back to workgroup) and re-joing to re-invoke the process?     - Server just froze Does anyone have an idea why a server would just freeze? Around 2pm today my cleint called me and told me the network is down. When I got there the server was frozen, ctrl-alt-del was not working. I hard booted it and everything was fine. The Anitvirus showed nothing unusualy as I block almost every attachment from email. SBS2003, the 15 SBS2000 CALs can be used or do I have to purchase CAL
upgrades of some sort?
