    - Terminal Server thru VPN Hello,performed reinstall with SP1a and IIS lockdown and Terminal Server Update and replacing WebConsole in the WebAdmin folder. Problem is we are able to VPN to the network and access shared folders but are unable to start a TS session with "myconsole". Any tips on how to troubleshoot this?     - Install Firewall Client on Server a no,no? We have an independent server program that needs to go out and transmit encrypted packets on port 0443 or 5845 for various authorizations and credit card transactions. Program updates for this software is also done thru port 12345. The only way I have been able to get this done is by installing the firewall client on the server, though the program updates still don't work. The firewall client warns not to do this when installing. Since doing this, Exchange has become unstable with mostly the service attendant not starting on boot leading to all other exchange services not starting therefore taking exchange server down. I'm not sure if the firewall client is the cause of this but it seems likely.     - bad cn for a user. how to fix? One of our users's accounts whose account name has been changed is still resolving incorrectly in some cases. On our sbs2k domain our users try to address an email to a new employee. They begin typing in the to: field the person's name, the auto-fill / nick name feature suggests New User <OUser>. Alas! Where OUser stands for the old username alias (first initial, last name) before the account was renamed. I've deleted the outlook nickname file / username cache file, and it goes away until the 2nd time the user is emailed, somehow Outlook reads the bad username back in. I've triple-checked all the active directory user properties I could, and I've never had this problem before. I then was looking at the to: field "Select Names" user description at I noticed that the Name = New User, but the email addres was: /o=OURDOMAIN/ou=first administrative group/cn=Recipients/cn=OUser Where can I change this?     - Disaster recovery exercise hi all I'm have trouble with rebuilding my SBS2K offline on a new machine (named SONE) (with different hardware). A clean SBS2K has been installed on SONE, Exchange SP3 and SBS2K SP1 has also been installed. Then I try restored the system state from the backup. Everythings look fine till this point. I restarted the server, and while starting Windwos, a blue screen came up.... said somthing like "INASSESSBLE_BOOT_DEVICE"... So I thought that was because of the different hardware so I tried to repair the windows using the SBS2K Disk 1. However, the blue screen is not going away after the repair... same error message says "INASSESSBLE_BOOT_DEVICE"... The existing SBS2K is running on a RAID5 SCSI HDDs, and SONE only got 2 IDE HDDs... would this be the cause of the problem? How can i fix it? I'm planing to rebuild SONE (again!), so I'd appreciate if anyone can show me the right direction.     - sbs 2000 to sbs 2003 hi i am about to upgrade to sbs 2003 on a new machine. This is because the current machine which has sbs 2000 on it is over 5 years old and the hard disk is beginning to fail. i would like some advice on how to go about doing this. I will have 2 network cards, ADSL router, exchange and ISA server.     - User name change stops user accessing server drives Hi sbs2000 with two more win2k servers in domain. I have changed only the login name of a user so she logs in with a different username but the account is the same as before. Now although she can login to her client pc but she can't access any of the drives on any of the servers. What could be the reason and how can I fix it?     - Lost Internet access after added in admin group I have a SBS 2000, the clients are XP running through a simple router and dsl line. I added a domain user to the admin group of a local PC and now the user can not get on the Internet(The page cannot be displayed). I removed the user from the admin group but they still can not get on. I rebuilt this machine three times and everytime I add a domain user to the local admin group I lose Internet access. All other network functions are fine. I am running DHCP and my setting do not change, and I can't access sites I know about using just IP addresses, so I don't think it is a DNS issue. What can be the problem? i have run an ipconfig from the workstatons and it comes up with ip address in the 10.1.1.x range, subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, gateway is the server ip address and dns is the server ip address and dhcp is the server ip address. The sbs firewall client is configured on each workstation. If i try to do an nslookup of the server from the client machine via machine name it comes up that it cannot find the dns server and the dns server is unknown. Then it returns the server name and ip address. The same thing happens if i try to run nslookup from the server. Clients are running wndows xp sp2. The windows xp sp2 firewall is turned off. I need help ASAP. The connection to the server was running ok, we went on holidays and came back to find very slow access to the server.     - Uncontrolled Unwanted email notifications Is there a setting to force Project Server 2003 to ask before send email notifications? everytime I change tasks or assignments it automatically send the messages. Sometimes I am not ready for this but the messages are sent after I save. Is there a way to temporarly dissallow this or to request that the server ask before send? where is the control point for these email notifications? I know there is one in Project Web acces Email notifications but this is general but is not the part that controls them.     - Outbound FTP access. Using SBS2003 premium and running ISA 2004. Outbound FTP access seems to being stopped. The user can connect all ok to the remote FTP site, with a user and password. But as soon as you try and upload you get a access denied error. Downloading is all ok.     - SBS2003 SP1 install problem. Hi, The product is SBS 2003 Standard. So using the download version of the service pack. When coming to installing the last step 'SBS2003-KB885918-SP1-X86-ENU.EXE' The setup starts but after about 20 seconds, i get a message about the user needs to be part of the Domain Admin, Enterprise Admins or Schema Admins. Using the user Administrator which is a member of all of the above groups!!!! When selecting ok on the message it says that the install failed with a error, and to view the error log. When looking in the error log there are no errors listed, it displays certain parts of sbs like exchange etc. checking if there ok before the patch is applied, and everything says 'ok'.     - How to solve this issue 3 of our DCs log the following error in the event viewer, they report this error again and again.     - Best way to give user access to files and directories We just installed a windows 2003 server that is a member of a windows 2000 domain. We are planning to move the user files and directories off the 2000 server and onto the 2003 because of space issues. Each user has a home directory and some are sharing folder inside that directory with other users. I noticed that when I can here that most if not all of the directories have group Everyone listed in the permissions and security which makes me think that all users can access all directories. My question is what is the best way to tighten up the accesss to the files to only allow each user access to their own directory and grant permission to some files within that to some other users.     - cached mode (smtp) and pop account Inheritance Network MD = POP account users = pop account = Exchange as storage. MD wants exchange but wants to download his mail whilst at home via his pop account. Would this still work...... Just wondering if one uses cached mode in the office and once home they connect to their home lan network and receive mail via another pop account would the mail go the offline folder.     - VPN Client No Internet Access trying to find HOW TO configure external XP pro client to use VPN and access the internet we have the VPN working and he can connect to SBS and access shares etc. (set up with static pool of addresses) ... when He is connected via VPN he cannot access the Internet (gets a DNS or page not found error) ... if we "uncheck" the "use default gateway.." checkbox on the advanced tab of the TCP/IP properties of the client's VPN network connection properties he gains internet access but loses the ability to access the SBS 'shares' and Exchange server ... (we have him login into his XP Pro box as a "local (this machine)" user ... when he has used this XP Pro machine inside our firewall and logs in to the network he can access the internet (i.e. no firewall restrictions on either this machine or this network user) is there a "cookbook" somewhere that shows how to set up an SBS 2000 server and an external (from the internet) client ... that allows the client to access the SBS Shares and Exchange (using Outlook 2002 client) and still have Internet access ??? thanks Tag: SBS2000 Licensing Tag: 176477

    - Unable to Stop/Start Services, Access Windows Update, Uninstall, e We intended on upgrading from SBS 2000 to 2003 and ran into a lot of trouble. First, we tried to free up some space on the hard disk and were unable to uninstall 2 different programs - it would just stop responding. Also, when we started the installation of 2003, it would hang up at the begininning where it was checking the setup requirements (specifically 18 of 42). Also, when we tried to stop and start any of the services - it would timeout. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on or have any suggestions for going forward?     - Top three SPAM Filters for SBS 2003 Would someone be nice enough to give me the top three: 1. SMTP 2. POP3 PS I am running SP1 on my SBS 2003 system. I wonder if this "Microsoft Exchange Server: Exchange Intelligent Message Filter" is worth upgrading to SP2. I know I get the 75GB increase in space which I currently do not need. I imagine the IMF is only SMTP-based and I have a few clients that *must* use the POP3 connector to accomodate all the remote users (100s) that must have email accounts that cannot be created on the SBS Server.     - Desktop icons vanish Only one laptop user out of a dozen or so is getting this issue, even though all of them move between offices. We have My Documents and the Desktop redirected to the user's home drive on the server. The home drives are replicated via DFS between the servers at 3 offices, as we have desktop users who travel themselves between these offices and need local access. This user is returning to his normal office and logging on OK. All his desktop icons appear. However, sometime during the morning (let's say 1-2 hours later) his desktop will vanish. I check the DFS and the icons will have disappeared across all the servers. I then have to restore from tape. The Desktop is part of his redirected My Documents, but nothing else in that folder disappears, and the Desktop folder remains, albeit empty.     - HTTP Redirector: Send To Requested Web Server Hello, I am STILL puzzled by the HTTP Redirector. Does this effectively disable the cache for ALL clients? I have enabled this setting and it DOES resolve an authentication problem I had with a particular site. On page 531 of "ISA Server 2000: Building Firewall for Windows 2000" (Shinder), we get the following: "Use this option if you NEVER want SecureNAT and Firewall Clients to access the web proxy service for HTTP requests". Fair enough. My understanding of the isaserver.org article "Configuring Web Proxy Clients for Direct Access" is that this option merely "ALLOWS" clients to bypass the cache (rather than prevents them for accessing it): http://www.isaserver.org/tutorials/Configuring_Web_Proxy_Clients_for_Direct_Access.html All my workstations have the Firewall Client loaded.     - server memory 99% full Hello helpful people, I have a 2000 SBS server for a network of 12 users. over the weekend, my email has dried up and I cant receive any. i have spoken to my ISP and he asked me to check out the server. i have done this and see that the memory is 99% full, which I guess isnt helping matters.     - DNZ issues. Hi Dear Hope you are doing fine. I have a problem was wondering if you can assist me. Here is the Scenario. I have two DMZ Web servers windows 2000 behind the firewall let's call them DMZ1 and DMZ2 I have two Application member servers inside of firewall let's call them Server1"Win2000" and Server2 "Win 2003". All the servers can ping to each other but when I want to ping by name from DMZ web servers to the member servers I can not. I can not access or map any folders from DMZ servers to the Member Servers. And that started lately. I don't know what to do. I have release or bypassed the rights in the firewall for accessing DMZ to the member servers. I have included all the server names in the "HOST" and "LMHOST" in all the 4 servers. Do you know what is wrong? I know DNS is the problem since I can ping to ip address but not name. What can I do to fix it, because people remotely with FTP or directly within the network try to access some apps from DMZ to the Member servers but they get access denied or network can not be found error?     - SQL 2000 sp4 stops SBS2003 setup I am adding CRM3.0 to my SBS 2003 setup. CRM 3 requires SQL 2000 with sp4. Having installed sp4, I then needed to run SBS setup for another component. The setup failed when checking its components stating that SBS needed SQL sp3. It clearly isn't recognising sp4. Is there a fix for this? Setup aborted at this point and wouldn't let me continue.     - SBS2003 and DSL Modems. First off, Thanks for reading this post. Iâ??m a bit new to what Iâ??m trying to do in this post, so if this sounds a bit simple to some, please pass anything you can along to me. I am trying to get SBS2003 to play well with a DSL Modem/Router. The Server has an inside and outside NIC card. We attempted to get a connection to the Internet two ways. #1, Connect the DSL Modem to the outside NIC, turn off the router functions, and let SBS2003 handle all of the connection information. User Name, Password and so on. The Modem dials out, but the IP address coming back from the modem is not the static number that we have. Tried several modems from the DSL provider, but the problem is between SBS2003 and the DSL Modem. Unfortunately the DSL provided will not allow â??Otherâ?? brands of modems so we are stuck. This modem will simply not pass on the Static IP address that is ours, and provides a phantom address, which renders this useless in this configuration. So seeing that this will not work, no matter what we try, we moved to connection #2. #2, Connect the DSL Modem to the network switch, turn ON the router functions, and let the Modem/Router handle all connection information, Username, Password and so on. Making sure the Server now knows the Internet Gateway is the router that is on the switch. This works fine, but we can not provide for most of the needed functions of SBS2003 from the outside world. The most we get is Internet to all of the machines. Remote Access, Remote Mail, Remote Desktop among other things simply will not work with this configuration. We know this. And connecting this configuration to the outside NIC also does not work since the Server and the Router functions fight with each other and the Static IP again is not passed to the server. But the odd thing, the STATIC IP address is showing in this configuration but will not pass off to the server no matter what we try with Configuration #1 or #2. This sent us in many directions, and our final thought was to try what we are trying now. I will give a bunch of fake IP numbers just to show what directions we are moving in right now. We have connected the DSL Modem to a Linksys Router BEFSR41. In the router, DHCP is turned off, and it is given an IP of 192.168.30.1 We have also programmed in the static IP address given by the Modem. The Linksys router is then connected to the server through its outside NIC with an IP address of 192.168.30.2 All pertinent Gateway, Subnet and DNS information is programmed into the Linksys Router as well. The outside NIC on the server is then given the IP of 192.168.30.2, Subnet of 255.255.255.0, Gateway of 192.168.30.1 (the Linksys Router) and the DNS of the router 192.168.30.1 And finally, the DMZ of the Linksys Router is turned on for the IP address of the Outside NIC of the server. (192.168.30.2) In theory, what we think should have happened was to basically get by the DSL Modem Problem by making the DSL Modem and the LinkSys Router one big Cable Modem that just hands over to the server a Static IP address (192.168.30.1) from the router, and make it think itâ??s the outside one and let the router deal with the DSL Modem problem on not handing off our Real static IP address. This works, for about 90% of what we need. We are able to connect to our serverâ??s remote sites, (http://remote.whatever.com/remote) and we are able to check mail, and most of the other functions of the remote area, but we are unable to connect to a remote desktop at all. When we choose this selection, it sends us the certificate to allow us to get into the remote area. Then it displays the lists of machines on the network. When we click on one of the machine to remotely work on that machine, it does nothing until it ultimately times out. I know this is a long shot, but has anyone else ever had problems with DSL like we have and connecting DSL with SBS2003, or have ever tried what we are trying. It seems for the most part we are on the right path since we have more and more things that we are able to do, but there is something missing that we canâ??t quite figure out that might be on the Server end or the Modem/Linksys end, and we are now stumped. We canâ??t figure out why SBS2003 will not work with DSL Cable Modems, and we have also found that there are many people who have the same problems when trying to let SBS2003 do the dialing, login and password functions of the DSL Modem. So we have tried other routes as I have said, with great results but can not get there 100%. Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on our problem. I know this is not something that everyone would or should try, but we are trying to keep things as secure as possibly and still have our remote access with this stubborn DSL Modem and Company.     - Stopping Exchange and SQL before backup I need to delete and re-create an array on my SBS 2k server which contains the system volume, as well as SQL and part of Exchange (not MDBDATA). I intend to do a core OS install, followed by full restore from tape (Backup Exec 8.5 for SBS). If I stop Exchange and SQl services before I run a backup, could I restore Exchange and SQl from full file copies of their directories when I'm doing the primary OS restore from tape? Exchange and SQL would not even exist yet on any drives as part of the core OS install. It doesn't seem as though log files would be an issue that way (they are not even on the array being re-created). Perhaps I'd have to change the Exchange or SQL startup types. I'm not in disaster recovery mode and have some leeway. I could use the Backup Exec agents for Exchange and SQL (and do have backups), but I would like to minimize the efforts required.     - Ghost SBS2k system partition ? One of the SBS2k disaster recovery whitepapers mentions ghosting the SBS2k system partition as a means of backup. Is this a supported option? Though recipients to whom messages are sent seem to be random, the problem occurs most often when sending to aol recipients and seem to occur whenever sent to one specific aol recipient.     - upgrade question I'm close to migrating from a SBS2000 domain to a full Windows 2003. I have had Exchange 2003 and SQL 2000 running on different boxes for awhile now. I use a Cisco PIX as my firewall. I don't want to go to SBS2003. After moving some final data/components off of the SBS2000 machine/domain controller - and a few other tasks - I need to retire the SBS2000 machine. My plan is the following and I have a few questions that I'd appreciate any help with: 1) Remove an existing Windows 2000 DC from the network - as a "DC in the closet" fallback option 2) Install a Windows 2003 machine and promote it to a DC in the SBS 2000 domain. Also setup DNS on this machine and make it a GC. 3) Shutdown the SBS2000 machine and use ntdsutil to seize all FSMO roles to the Windows 2003 DC. Q: Would this be the recommended method for getting rid of the SBS2000 machine? Q: Should I dcpromo it then shut it down (if it even can be dcpromo'd) or just shut it down and remove it from the network? 4) Use ntdsutil to clean up metadata that refers to the former SBS2000 machine. Remove references to the old server from DNS. Q: What would be the best method for doing the DNS cleanup? * After the above steps I hope to have the same domain but with the SBS2000 box removed and the domain now running as a full Windows 2003 domain. The computer stays at this screen and will remain unresponsive until the power is switched off manually. Before turning it off, we are able to access the shared folders on it (although slow), terminal server sessions open, but remain black (dead) and backup jobs will run, although they will not fully complete. Exchange is down. After the server is turned back on, it runs normally again, until the issue recurs, which is usually the following morning.     - Exchange Update - KB894689, fails Hi, SBS 2000, up to date bar the Subj KB (Exchange 2000 SP whatever (3 I think)). I installed via Microsoft Update initially. The Exchange update failed w' the following message: store.exe EntryPoint Not Found The procedure entry point FSetCallTracingCallbacks could not be located in the dynamic link library EXOSAL.DLL I used stopped IIS Admin and then removed the KB via Add/Remove Programs. Rebooted. Downloaded the update manually. Stopped IIS Admin and Exchange System Attendant. Re-applied the update. No error message this time until I rebooted, whereupon I got the same error. I have removed the update now - and all is well - bar I don't have the Exchange critical update installed - which is of some concern. This is all on my testbed machine. Now all Internet mail being sent or received is being lost. There are no errors messages in the event log or in users e-mail boxes. I have reviewed all the connectors and they appear to be okay. Have a default policy which states: (mailnickname=*) SMTP @domain3.co.uk (responsible for all) SMTP @domain3.local (responsible for all) SMTP @domain2.co.uk (responsible for all) SMTP @domain2.local (responsible for all) SMTP @domain1.co.uk (type=checked, primary, (responsible for all)) SMTP @domain1.local (type=checked, (responsible for all)) X400 c=GB;a= ;p=DOMAIN1;o=Exchange; The pop3 collector collects mail for all the .co.uk addresses no problem. Certain users have domain1.co.uk some have domain2.co.uk others domain3.co.uk and a few have multiples. It seems like pg.co.uk and pl.co.uk are simply being lost. The pop3 collector collects but the mail does not appear in the mailbox. i.e. i get mail to my domain1.co.uk but not domain2.co.uk or domain3.co.uk It did all use to work when the SBS server's IP was allowed to relay. However this caused Exchange to resend (well try to resend) incoming mail to other external recipients like the pop3 catch all bug. I'm certainly going to be glad when I can ditch this pop3 collector but its a couple of months away :S I've tried re-adding the domains above, and even checked the type box which I believe is unessecary. Also if sending a mail from internal to a valid address at domain2.co.uk or domain3.co.uk the exchange server delivers it. If sent to an invalid address at those domains the exchange server pushes it out to our host's smtp server which then bounces back an ndr (as there is no such pop3 box). Solutions?     - Questions about upgrade from SBS 2000 to full 2003 domain I'm close to migrating from a SBS2000 domain to a full Windows 2003. I have had Exchange 2003 and SQL 2000 running on different boxes for awhile now. I use a Cisco PIX as my firewall. I don't want to go to SBS2003. After some final data off of the SBS2000 machine/domain controller - and a few other tasks - I need to retire the SBS2000 machine. My plan is the following and I have a few questions that I'd appreciate any help with: 1) Remove an existing Windows 2000 DC from the network - as a "DC in the closet" fallback option 2) Install a Windows 2003 machine and promote it to a DC in the SBS 2000 domain. Also setup DNS on this machine and make it a GC. 3) Shutdown the SBS2000 machine and use ntdsutil to seize all FSMO roles to the Windows 2003 DC. Q: Would this be the recommended method for getting rid of the SBS2000 machine? Q: Should I dcpromo it then shut it down (if it even can be dcpromo'd) or just shut it down and remove it from the network? 4) Use ntdsutil to clean up metadata that refers to the former SBS2000 machine. Remove references to the old server from DNS. Q: What would be the best method for doing the DNS cleanup? * After the above steps I hope to have the same domain but with the SBS2000 box removed and the domain now running as a full Windows 2003 domain. I have a customer running SBS2000 wishing to add more users. We have
purchased the SBS2003 cals, applied our downgrade rights and asked our
supplier for SKU-807-00144 (SBS2000 licensing media), only to be told that
the product is no longer available. How can I get round the situation?

Well, you're going to need the CAL setup floppy. AFAIK, no way around it.

A. You will need to purchase Windows Small Business Server 2003 CALs, apply
your downgrade rights, and then contact your Microsoft customer service
center to order fulfillment media at a nominal fee. You need to order the
fulfillment media separately since Windows Small Business Server 2003 CAL
packs do not contain the floppy disk that is necessary to deploy licenses on
Small Business Server 2000. The Small Business Server 2000 floppy disk also
works with previous versions of Small Business Server.
