ISA2k, Pop connection timing out. Help
Inherited a small 10pc network. SBS2K. 2NIC setup. Fully patched. Pop3 mail
is very
slow, times-out to the
ISP's server. Internet/WEB speed is fine. The ISP assures me that I am the
only
one having this issue. To look at the network. Something to note, the
profile has two things going on. Using ISA2000.
I've inherited a Dell Powerconnect switch, one of the managed ones. I did
some digging around. I noticed that:
1) 10 pcs (xp pro sp2) have their NICS at 100 Full Duplex
2) The Dell's powerconnecct switch's port settings were at AUTO.
Thinking this was inconsistent, I set the Dell ports speed to 100 FULL and
all the
PCS connections to the server slowed down and files could not be saved to
the server. Hmmmm....
I set the Dell's ports back to AUTO and the speed was back to the way it
was.
I tested the PC's NICS and also changed them to AUTO but this changed
nothing.
The speed tests: Copying 1 gig of data (2000 files) from the workstation to
the
server and vice versa. Opening Outlook. Opening up a SQL sever database.
Saving a large photoshop file to a network drive.
Some questions:
1. Is there a setting in ISA2K that be changed to improve bandwidth for
pop3? Way to play around with bandwidth tuning?
2. Looking at the Dell switch, noticed a setting "spanning tree" is
disabled. (only one switch)
3. Also, at the Dell switch, there is a "multimedia support" and the "high
priority optimization" is disabled. IGMP is disabled. Should this be on?
Thanks

Interesting article from Techworld. Firewalls. Your thoughts.
Question, what services can be turned off safely on SBS2000 Boxes? Minimum
services?

Firewalls a dangerous distraction says expert
False sense of security.
By Rodney Gedda, Computerworld Australia
A preoccupation with firewalls is diverting attention and resources away
from the more important issue of locking systems down, according to an
expert.
Computer security researcher at the San Diego Supercomputing Center (SDSC),
Abe Singer said companies can spend 90 percent of their security efforts on
firewalls and not much of anything else. "I'm not saying firewalls are
completely irrelevant, but how much effort do you spend on security?" Singer
asked. "Do security at the host, not just the perimeter. You should be
worried about what users are doing, because if an attacker is going through
the perimeter [without secure hosts] then it's game over."
Speaking at the Australian Unix and open systems user group (AUUG), Singer
prides himself on the claim that the SDSC has gone four years without a
root-level intrusion to its systems - without using a firewall. "At the SDSC
we don't use a firewall, it's not feasible," he said. "Since we have to
secure hosts individually if we had a firewall it would be so open it would
be useless."
Singer said there is a perception that a firewall is a must-have. He cited
Visa's server requirements for online merchants which stated they must have
a firewall, but did not specify any configuration details. "Too much of the
security budget is being spent on firewalls which also get too much
attention [and] it's also 'cool' to have a new firewall to play with," he
said, adding that other appliances like intrusion detection and prevention
systems are an extension of the same idea.
"People are attracted to the idea that security can be bought [and] it's
hard to differentiate between marketing hype and reality," he said. "We have
a known 'good' config and when we find something is bad it's consistently
fixed."
Singer is adamant that intrusion will not be stopped by a firewall and
attackers have used Trojan SSH clients to steal user names and passwords.
Other practices Singer recommends include not running services you don't
need, for example, services that are only required internally don't need to
be external.
"You really need to think through your processes [and] relying on a firewall
means you're probably doing security wrong," he said. "Surveys have shown
that 60 percent of security breaches are internal but 70 percent of people
are worried about hackers on the outside. Internal breaches are worse,
because someone has a level of access and knows where the assets are. If an
attacker was really looking at compromising a company's assets he or she
would get a job in the mail room." Tag: Licensing Tag: 173834

Press release
The Magical M&M's from SmallBizServer.Net, Mariette Knap and Marina Roos,
are delighted to announce that they've teamed with two established SBSers
and trainers to launch an exciting new forum supporting Microsoft's new
Small Business Specialist Community.
The Small Business Specialist Community is Microsoft's new partnership
opportunity for small business technology consultants, resellers and system
builders. The Small Business Specialist Community has many Microsoft
Partner-level characteristics (like the Gold, Certified and Registered
levels) and competency-like characteristics (such as network infrastructure,
security and information worker). "Because this exciting new program was
just announced by Microsoft, there are very few support resources for it."
Said Mariette Knap from SmallBizServer.Net. "Our forum is one of those
support resources."
Hosted by Beatrice Mulzer and Harry Brelsford, co-authors of the new "Small
Business Specialist Primer and 70-282 Exam Preparation Guide" book (SMB
Nation Press), this forum will answer business and technical questions
related to the Small Business Specialist Community. "Really there are two
forums. The first forum answers program-related questions such as becoming a
Small Business Specialist." Said well-known SBSer and international author
Harry Brelsford. "And the second forum supports the 70-282 certification
exam that is a certification component to qualify as a Small Business
Specialist. But equally important, Beatrice and I are here to support and
supplement Microsoft's community building efforts in the small business
segment."
Specifically, the new forum will:
- Provide insights into becoming a Small Business Specialist beyond the
Microsoft Partner Web site. For example, the Small Business Specialist
implementation in the United Kingdom has a few unique twists (a dated logo
badge that must be renewed annually)
Have an international flavor. Between Beatrice's native German language
fluency and Harry's extensive global travels, this forum will reflect the
true international flavor of the small business technology consulting
community.
- 70-282 examination guidance. Small Business Specialist candidates can
interact with the forum hosts in a "birds of a feather" format to enhance
their efforts to successfully pass the 70-282 certification examination.
Much more! As changes are introduced into the Small Business Specialist
Community, the forums will be updated to provide the most current
information.
Visit http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=53&afgroup=12 to join
the new Small Business Specialist Community forum. Visit www.smbnation.com
to purchase the new "Small Business Specialist Primer and 70-282 Exam
Preparation Guide" book and subscribe to the free SMB Technology Watch

Trend Micro ScanMail and missing network adapters
I have just reinstalled SBS 2000 after a crash and unrecoverable AD from
multiple backup sources. Most everything on the server is working but I have
a persistent problem while trying to install Trend Micro Scan Mail (after
successfully installing Office Scan) . After the Scan mail installs and I try

and restart, my network connection are unavailable. They still appear in the
device manager, but do not appear in the task bar or in the properties on "My
Network Places".

SBS 2000 - New AD (users manually re-created) - Can I restore Exch
Hey guys,
Got kind of an urgent problem. I wanted to reinstall one of our SBS 2000
servers. I backed up the system state and exchange using NT Backup. I
reinstalled W2k, updated to SP4, and reinstalled SBS 2000. When I tried to
restore the System State I keep getting errors. The first time I got a BSOD
on boot up after the restor. I cound't get into anything (Safe mode, safe
mode w/ command, directory services restore mode), and nothing seemed to fix
the problem. I tried repairing and still had the same problem. I gave up and
reformatted, did the whole thing over and next time it would boot up to the
login screen, but this time I didn't have a mouse pointer, and the keyboard
wouldn't work. (It worked outside of windows - during boot) I almost am ready
to just create a new AD with all of the same info and recreate the users.
Would it still be a possibility to restore the Exchange server information if
I did that or not? Thanks in advance!

SBS2K Exchange Web Mail
Hi there,
We are currently using SBS2K. We want to be able to access our exchange
server over the internet. We have a ADSL broadband connection with a fixed
IP. However the ISA filter wizard will not allow the Exchange server to post
on the internet since it treats the ADSL connection as a DIAL UP connection.
Is there anyway around this?
Cheers

Limiting user access via policies
Hi,
Apart from setting the user up as a member of the users group on the
workstation, what other lockdown mechanism can i use.
I have a user who's husband is in our line of work but he keeps on telling
her how to do this and that.
What other methods are effective and not disruptive to the general
operation.
I've used the default policy in the domain but they affect the admins too.
Such as :-
Disabling task manager
Disabling windows update
Disabling regedit
Disabling run
Disabling the taskbar & start menu
I've had to place the user as a member of the user group(workstation) due to
their bad nature.
I read about Organisation Units but I'm a bit stuck.
I would love some feedback on how to go about this.
Thank you

VPN Drive mapping
My situation
SBS2000
VPN & OWA in use
Drive mapping with DOS script
situation works fine with most vpn clients
however, when the client also activates offline folder settings, the
clients cannot find the drive mappings. the only thing they see are the
folders & files they made to available off line.
Running the DOS script helps sometimes but mostly you can not find the
mappings.
(it seems the computer thinks its not connected to the server)
I tried this with my own XPpro client. and indeed when I activate the
'available offline' my drive mappings are not working. As soon as i disable
the make 'available offline' it works fine again.
btw.
OWA works fine and also pinging to the fileservers are ok. I am almost sure
that the 'make available offline' is the cause. caused be the slow (cable or
adsl) connection?
If so , is there a patch or so, or is there an other reason

Parents of 15 year old find $71,000 in CASH in closet!
Does this headline look familiar? Of course it does. You most likely have
just seen this story recently featured on a major nightly news program
(USA).
His mother was cleaning and putting laundry away when she came across a
large brown paper bag that was suspiciously buried beneath some clothes and
a skateboard in the back of her son's closet. Nothing could have prepared
her for the shock she got when she opened the bag and found it was full of
cash. Five dollar bills, twenties, fifties and hundreds- all neatly
rubber-banded in labeled piles. "My first thought was that he had robbed a
bank", says the 41-year-old woman, "There was over $71,000 dollars in that
bag- that's more than my husband earns in a year."
The woman immediately called her husband at the car-dealership where he
worked to tell him what she'd discovered. He came home right away and they
drove together to the boy's school and picked him up. Little did they
suspect that where the money came from was more shocking than actually
finding it in the closet.
As it turns out, the boy had been sending out via E-mail on the internet a
type of 'chain-letter' to E-mail addresses that he obtained off of the
internet. Everyday after school for the past 2 months, he had been doing
this right on his computer in his bedroom.
"I just got the E-mail one day and I figured what the heck, I put my name on
it like the instructions said and I started sending it out", says the clever
15-year-old.
The E-mail letter listed 6 addresses and contained instructions to send one
$5 dollar bill to each of the person of the list, then delete that address
and move the other 2 addresses up, and finally to add your name to the
bottom of the list. The letter goes on to state that you would receive
several thousand dollars in $5 dollar bills within 2 weeks if you sent out
the letter with your name at
the bottom of the 3-address list "I get junk E-mail all the time, and I
really didn't think it was gonna work", the boy continues.
Within the first few days of sending out the E-mail, the Post Office Box
that his parents had gotten for his video-game magazine subscriptions began
to fill up with not magazines, but envelopes containing $5 dollar bills.
"about a week later I rode (my bike) down to the post office and my box had
1 magazine and about 300 envelopes stuffed in it. There was a yellow slip
that said I had to go up to the (post office) counter- I thought I was in
trouble or something (laughs)". He goes on, "I went up to the counter and
they had a whole box of more mail for me. I had to ride back home and empty
out my backpack 'cause I couldn't carry it all".
Over the next few weeks, the boy continued sending out the E-mail. "The
money just kept coming in and I just kept sorting it and stashing it in the
closet, I barely had time for my homework". He had also been riding his bike
to several of the area's banks and exchanging the $5 bills for twenties,
fifties and hundreds. "I didn't want the banks to get suspicious so I kept
riding to different banks with like five thousand at a time in my backpack.
I would usually tell the lady at the bank counter that my dad had sent me in
(to exchange the money) and he was outside waiting for me. One time the lady
gave me a really strange look and told me
that she wouldn't be able to do it for me and my dad would have to come in
and do it, but I just rode to the next bank down the street (laughs)".
Surprisingly, the boy didn't have any reason to be afraid. The reporting
news team examined and investigated the so-called 'chain-letter' the boy was
sending out and found that it wasn't a chain-letter at all. In fact, it was
completely legal according to US Postal and Lottery Laws, Title 18, Section
1302 and 1341, or Title 18, Section 3005 in the US code, also in the code of
federal
regulations, Volume 16, Sections 255 and 436, which states a product or
service must be exchanged for money received.
Every five dollar bill that he received contained a little note that read,
"Please add me to your mailing list". This simple note made the letter legal
because he was exchanging a service (adding the purchasers name to his
mailing list) for a five dollar fee. Here is the letter that the 15-year-old
was sending out by E-mail, you can do the exact same thing he was doing,
simply by following the instructions in the letter.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here are instructions on how to make $10,000 US cash in the next
2 weeks:
There are 6 addresses listed below.
1.-Send the person of the 6 list a $5 bill wrapped in 2 pieces of paper (to
securely hide it), along with a note that says: "Please add me to your
list".Then delete first name, move the other 5 up and put your name at the
bottom.
2.- Now start sending this ENTIRE E-mail back out to people. When 20 people
receive it, those 20 people will move your name up to the middle position
and they will each send out 20. That totals 400 people that will receive
this letter with your name in the middle. Then, those 400 people will move
your name to the top and they will each send you a $5 bill. 8,000 people
each sending you a $5 bill = $40,000 cash. That's if everyone responds to
this E-mail, but not everyone will, so you can expect more realistically to
receive about $10,000 cash $5 bills in your mailbox.
This will work for anyone, anywhere in the world in any country.
Notes: Always send $5 cash (U.S. CURRENCY) for each.(Euro or English pounds
also are accepted) Checks NOT accepted. Make sure the cash is concealed by
wrapping it in
at least 2 sheets of paper. On one of those sheets of paper, write the words
"Please add me to your mailing list". That will make the program Legal and
Safe. Incode your full
name and home address on the other paper. Write on the white envelope the
words "Please Acknowledge Receipt Of This LetterTo Email Address Inside".
This will prevent thievery and make sure that the money will be delivered
properly to each addresses.
What you are doing is creating a service. You are requesting a legitimate
service and you are paying for it!
Like most of us, I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the
legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the U.S. Post Office
(1-800-725-2161..... and they confirmed that it is indeed legal. This is
perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to Title 18, Section 1302 and
1341, US Postal and Lottery Laws or Title 18, Section 3005 in the US code,
also in the code of Federal regulations, Volume 16, Sections 255 and 436,
which states; "a product or service must be exchanged for money received."
Thesimple note in the letter, "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST", makes it
legal because you are paying for exchange of a service, (adding the
purchasers name to his mailing list) for a $5.00 fee.
The more E-mails you send out, the more cash you will receive. If each
person sends out 100 E-mails, there will be 1,000,000 people that receive
this letter when your name reaches the top. If only 1% of those people
respond, you will get $50,000 cash.

TESTIMONIALS
NEED PROOF?
1.) Here are just testimonials from the countless individuals who decided
to invest nothing more than $5 and half an hour of their time to participate
in this program: To date, I have
made over $1,100,100. Even now as I write this letter to you, I find it
strange to come to terms with the fact that, like most people, I've worked
hard and struggled all my life just to get
by and then something so ridiculously simple drops into my lap and turns my
life around almost immediately. When you think back to all the similar
things I've thrown in the bin, it makes me
shudder because I know just how close I came to missing out completely. -
David Rhodes,Perth.
2.) What an amazing plan! I followed your instructions just 3 weeks ago,
and although I haven't made 10 grand yet, I'm already up to $6,135. I'm
absolutely gob smacked. - Alan Humphries,
Leicester.
3.) This is Lisa. Well, what can I say? THANK YOU SO MUCH! I sent out like
you said and then I just forgot about thewhole thing. To be honest, I didn't
really think anything would come of it. But when I checked a week later,
there was over $3,000 in it! After 30 days I now have over $11,000 to spend!
I can't thank you enough!- Lisa McDonald, Northampton.
4.) I was shocked when I saw how much money came flooding. Within 3 weeks I
receive $7,449. At first, I thought there had been some sort of
error! -Richard Barrie, Cirencester.
Just a few months ago, each of these people were doing the same thing as you
are at this very moment - reading this! But because they decided to follow
the simple instructions given below, they are now considerably better off as
a result. And there's no reason whatsoever why you can't share in this
success. You've got nothing to lose, and EVERYTHING to gain!
-----DIRECTIONS ----- FOR HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS-----
Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own
posting. Simply put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and drag
your cursor to the bottom of this newsletter, and select 'copy' from the
edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the
computer's memory.
Step 2) Open a blank 'notepad' file and place your cursor at the top of the
blank page. From the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will paste a copy of
the letter into notepad so that you can add your name to the list.
Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If you want to do your
postings in different settings, you'll always have this file to go back to.
Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for various
newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.)
Step 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by
highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit menu.
Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as they
scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the post
message selector. You're done
with your first one!
Congratulations...THAT'S IT!
All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you
get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup!
**REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST
IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200**
That's it! You will begin receiving money from around the world within days!
You may eventually want to rent a P.O.Box due to the large amount of mail
you will receive. If you wish to stay anonymous,
you can invent a name to use, as long as the postman will deliver it.
**JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT.**
Now, each of the 5 persons who just sent me $5.00 make the MINIMUM 200
postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond to each of the
original 5, that is another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each make 200
MINIMUM posts with my name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I will bring in an
additional $125.00!
Now, those 125 persons turn around and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at
#3 and only receive 5 replies each, I will make an additional $625.00! OK,
now here is the fun part, each of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM 200
letters with my name at #2 and they each only receive 5 replies, that just
made me $3,125.00!!!
Those 3,125personswill all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups with my
name at #1 and if still 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react I will receive
$15,625,00! With an original investment of only $30.00! AMAZING! When your
name is no longer on the list, you just take the latest posting in the
newsgroups, and send out another $5.00 each to names on the list, putting
your name at number 6 again. And start posting again.
The thing to remember is: do you realize that thousands of people all over
the world are joining the internet and reading these articles everyday? JUST
LIKE YOU are now!! So, can you afford $6.00 and see if it really works?? I
think so...People have said, "What if the plan is played out and no one
sends you the money? So what? What are the chances of that happening when
there are tons of new honest users and new honest people who are joining the
internet and newsgroups everyday
and are willing to give it a try? Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new
users, every day, with thousands of those joining the actual internet.
Remember, play ....FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will really work!
THE FACTS ARE SIMPLE; IF YOU NEED TO MAKE A FEW THOUSAND DOLLARS REALLY!
FAST, THEN THIS PROGRAM I'M GOING TO SHARE WITH YOU IS THE WAY YOU CAN LEAN
ON. TO DO IT MEANS! THE FASTEST, EASIEST PROGRAM YOU WILLEVERDO!!! IT IS
VERY SAFE....WHY? because it is SPAM FREE.......Nobody will hunt you for
posting it on the group of business man......right........

"My name is Mitchell. My wife, Jody and I live in Chicago. I am an
accountant with a major U.S. Corporation and I make pretty good money. When
I received this program I grumbled to Jody about receiving ''junk mail''. I
made fun of the whole thing, spouting my knowledge of the population and
percentages involved. I ''knew'' it wouldn't work. Jody totally ignored my
supposed intelligence and few days later she jumped in with both feet. I
made merciless fun of her, and was ready to lay the old ''I told you so'' on
her when
the thing didn't work. Well, the laugh was on me! Within 3 weeks she had
received 50 responses. Within the next 45 days she had received a total of $
147,200.00 all cash! I was shocked. I have joined Jody in her ''hobby''."

"Not being the gambling type, it took me several weeks to make up my mind to
participate in this plan. But
conservative that I am, I decided that the initial investment was so little
that there was just no way that I
wouldn't get enough orders to at least get my money back. I was surprised
when I found my medium size post office box crammed with mails. I made
$319,210.00 in the first 12 weeks. The nice thing about this deal is that it
does not matter where people live. There simply isn't a better investment

came within 22 weeks".

Slow response on sending email with SBS 2003
I recently upgraded a site from SBS2000 to SBS2003. We have a mixture of
Outlook 2000, XP and 2003 on the workstations.
All of them are experiencing slow response in using their contact folder and
in sending email. When sending an email, opening their contact folder takes
several seconds delay bofore the contact list is shown. After completing an
email, there is a 5 - 10 second delay, after clisking on "send" before the
screen changes and the email is sent.
Any ideas on this ?

Pop connector and Forwarding
I have the strangest problem. I have SBS 2000 SP1a with 25 CAL. Exchange and
POP connector download the mail from 2/3 email for account . On these
accounts it is active a forwarding on an external address (blackberry).
The strange thing is that some messages are downloaded from the POP
connector, the forward is corrected, but I in don't' found it in the local
email.
These messages arrive from some external customers and I don't' have a rule
to detlete it.
NB I control on the center messages of exchange it is all correct: the
exctarnal email are downloaded from pop connector and send to the external
end local!
Someone can help me?

Want to Use ISA with 2-NIC
Relative novice here, so please forgive...
We currently have the following config:
-Single NIC server box running AD, DNS, DHCP, IIS
-192.168.16.x internal IP range (very small network)
-Sprint ADSL modem/router (internal IP addy 192.168.16.1 with an external
static IP address)
-24-port hub
- The server, the DSL router and all workstations connect to the hub, the
DSL router via a crossover cable.
-Default gateway is 192.168.16.1
-Internal NIC and DNS address is 192.168.16.2
-Network is great, Internet connectivity is great.
My goal is to run ISA so we can use the firewall feature and to point a
registered domain to our static IP. I installed a second NIC to be able to
run ISA. There are conflicting articles with MS about how to configure the
second NIC and ISA and have tried various combinations. But when I install
ISA, my internet connectivity goes away.
I configured the second NIC as:
IP address = the static external IP address assigned to us by Sprint
Default gateway = the gateway address supplied by Sprint
DNS server = 192.168.16.2 (I also tried using the DNS servers supplied by
Sprint)
Then, configured ISA:
IP address = the static external IP address assigned to us by Sprint
Default gateway = the gateway address supplied by Sprint
DNS server = the DNS servers supplied by Sprint
Then connected the DSL router to the second NIC via the crossover cable
(also tried a regular CAT5 patch cable).
I also tried to run ICW, but it stops with an error message, and the
icwlog.txt shows an error returned from call to RegisterMSBOExchangeBP().
No matter what I do, I have to return to my original configuration to have
internet access. I have searched MS and this newsgroup, but can't find any
solution that helps. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Trend ServerProtect 5.58 - update error (solved)
Hi - apolgies for vagueness, not near SBS and just posting this to speed
things up for anyone else with this issue.
Started to notice about 2 weeks ago that SP was not updating patterns on
SBS2K box (even though ScanMail and Oscan were...). Noticed this on all
boxes...
Error message when you tried to manually update was "source network generic
failure".
Just had time to poke around in Trend's joint Chinese-English KB ;O)
They more or less say its because the update URL is wrong - and indeed, when
you change it to the one they suggest AND reboot, update starts working.
Thing that miffs me (or maybe I missed an advisory...) is that the old one
worked fine for 3 years, so I asume that Trend have changed something at
their end.
p.s. was alarmed to see (don't often go there) that there are quite a few
'hotfixes' to be applied as well.

POP3 Connector crashing
I am running SBS 2000 and Exchange 2000 in a non-profit organisation with 20
users.
Over the last week or so we have had problems with retrieving external mail.
Internal mail can be sent and received without problem and external mail can
be sent but Exchange is not retrieving external mail from the ISP.
The problem seems to be with the Microsoft Connector for POP3 Mailboxes. The
service starts and seems to run ok but then after a while the status field
says it's stopping and it just hangs in this state. If I right click on the
service, all of the options to start, stop, restart etc are greyed out and
the only way to get out of this is to reboot the server. All of the other
Exchange related service seem to be running fine.
I have checked the Application Log and the only entries for the POP3
Connector apart from when it crashes are to say that it is starting and then
that it has started successfully. These were after a reboot of the server
last Tuesday and it worked ok until Friday.
This morning the status of the Connector said 'Stopping' and it has been
stuck there for the past 3 hours. The Application Log reports Event 1002 and
says "The service started the shutdown sequence... ".
Has anybody experienced this before? Can someone give me some advice on what
is causing the problem and how to resolve it?
Thanks! Tag: Licensing Tag: 173760
removing sbs
Hello all
I would like some advice on how to change a xmall business server setup,
running exchange and isa and making it a single workstation. This would
entail I presume, saving exchange profile for the individual user, demoting
it from a domain server to a normal computer, making it a workgroup,
installing applications and importing outlook backup. Also do I need to
specifically change it from being optimised for network services to
applications, or would the demoting do that?
Is this correct? and how would I go about it? This computer belonged in a
persons business who have since restructured to be a one man business and
this will now be the main and only computer.
Thanks

Internal Office Mail
We have recently set up a SBS 2000 Server in our office and eventually plan
to roll out exchange thru out the office but have only set it up with 5 cals
to review and familarize ourselves with it.
Currently all email accounts are pop3 and connect directly to their accounts
with our isp. So far we've set up one active account on exchange but don't
seem to be able to send internal mail; external and receive is fine. Have we
missed something? can we redirect at the exchange server or is it an all or
nothing situtation; that is does the entire office need to be active on the
server.

20GB naitive capacity tapes but are on the threshold of running out of space.
I have looked on-line and haven't found any larger tapes. Are there any?
If not, any suggestions on what to do? (we are currently doing a full
backup, which works well. I am hesitant to do incremental backups). I'd
prefer to keep the tape drive but if there are much better solutions out
there, I am open to suggestions.
Thanks,

No Icons in Network and Dial-up Connections
Hi there,
MY SBS 2000 server does not have any icons in the Network and dial-up
Connections. If i go to the device manager, my network card is enabled and is
working fine. How can I get into my network card properties to provide an ip
address or get the icons back?
Thanks! Tag: Licensing Tag: 173723
Paging File Error
I have recently taken over the administration of a SBS 2000 server and the
administrator console is telling me the server has the following critical
error.
Critical - 6/12/2005 3:48:14 PM - Paging File Error Code (from WMI) != 0
Paging File : Critical condition. (WMI Status: 8 )
Has anybody else experianced this and how is it rectified, i have tried
searching the MS Knowledge Base but to no avail?
I have a problem installing an upgrade to an application which we run off
this server due to paging errors which i assume is connected.
Thanks in anticipation. Tag: Licensing Tag: 173720
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logo
Hi,
I have just re-installed SBS2000 on a new box. I have just been testing it.
Initially everything was fine, workstation could logon etc, except now while
workstation still logs in, whenever I try to access Mapped Server Drive I get
"There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request"
I am also having trouble with Exchange, it tells me that there is no
Exchange server available?
I have been looking at a few things on net but can't seem to figure it out.
Any help would really be appreciated.

Strange IP Address in ISA Server Summary
Greetings!
Running SBS 2000. There are IP addresses that appear under "Traffic by
users" in ISA daily summary reports that don't belong to any client in
the domain. My clients are all assigned 10.x.x.x ip addresses; the
foreign ip addresses vary from 68.x.x.x to 70.x.x.x. Logs and
performance counters don't show unusual activity such as spikes in
processor usage or long qeues of odd emails in Exchange. When I ping
these addresses, I get replies back.
What are some things I can do to find out what's going on? How can I
find whose ip addresses these belong to using command line? Have I been
hacked? Spam?
Thanks.

CC Duplicates
If any of my users receive a mail with CC addresses specified, the server
instantly forwards/relays the message to the CC Recipient. Consequently the
CC recipient receives two copies of the mail. Both appear to have come from
the original sender however examination of the headers reveal that one came
from the originator whilst the other was despatched by our server.
At a complete loss - fully SP'd and patched; No open relays; No mailbox
rules running. Help!!! Tag: Licensing Tag: 173691
Sbs2003 users outlook permissions question
Hello,
I have a client who is running sbs2003 and one of the users wants to enable
some of the other users to see her inbox but not the subfolders within this.
I have tried several things and everytime I get the same result which is
people being able to see her inbox as well as the sunbfolders so do I need
to make a change on the server or via the outlook client.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Jase

Problem Sending Email to AOL Recipients
Hello,
SBS2K. I am having problems sending mail to AOL recipients. When I try to
send a message to any address on the aol.com domain, shortly after I send
the message, I receive the following:
This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
THIS IS A WARNING MESSAGE ONLY.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO RESEND YOUR MESSAGE.
Delivery to the following recipients has been delayed.
user@aol.com
Now, let me provide a little background on my setup. I have a T-1 from my
telephone company (Sprint) with a dedicated public IP address. I also have a
web hosting company which provides us email services which I do not use. I
have set up my DNS entries to have the MX records forward all mail to my
domain to my server here in house. After reading a few threads, namely
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.backoffice.smallbiz2000/browse_thread/thread/a89dc87419bf0231/9818b36d9893deb4?q=aol&rnum=6#9818b36d9893deb4, I
have looked at a few things and figured out what my problem is. I ran a DNS
report and it told me I have no reverse DNS entries for my MX records. I am
trying to contact Sprint to request they add PTR records for me, but who
knows how long that will take. Also, I am going to move my T-1 to a new
provider in a few months so I will need to do this again. That said, is
there anything I can do with my web hosts email servers to help get this
mail through. After reading that thread, I see the idea to create a new SMTP
connector to handle this. How do you go about doing this? Also, do I have to
use Sprint for this or can I use my web hosts email servers.
Finally, though unrelated, someone may know. Is there any way that I could
configure my Exchange server and/or my DNS records so that my mail comes to
my server, but when the server is down, the mail goes to my web hosts'
servers and when the server comes back up, they flow down to it. Although
the server is never down for more than a few minutes, it would give me some
piece of mind knowing that my mail is never going to bounce. Any ideas?
I appreciate the help on both of these issues. Thanks in advance.

remote workplace
Hi
just trying to connect the SBS2003 (with SP1) Server via the Internet and
the "Companyweb" Site. There you can choose "Remote workplace" (or similar -
I´m from germany) (It´s the same like http://intername.de/remote)
When i try to connect, there appears a list, where I can choose the
servername (or in another menue the workstations), but then after a short
time, I´ll get an "VB Script Error".
What can I do now.
Port 80/443 is enabled (Outlook Webaccess
Port 3389 (RDP)
Port 4125

sbs2000 needs to be replaced with fresh install with sbs2003
Hello All
I have a SBS2000 install which has been virused and tweaked back and forth ,
and now it seems to have some strange behaviours. Therefor I would like to
delete the install and do a fresh install of SBS 2003.
This is a 25 user site and I would like to avoid losing all the domain
information ,so that once installed the users PCs will not need to be
readded to the server.
I have got currently a 2nd server running win2003 acting as a Domain
controller and I was hoping that I could use this to maintain domain
information ,while I reinstall the sbs2000 and then the sbs2003 could suck
this information to reinstate at least the computer accounts .
I realise it is probably best to recreate the user accounts on the SBS ,
unless you guys suggest otherwise.
Any pointers or white papers to help with this would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Trend too expensive - what is a good replacement?
I am curious if anyone else has run into the new Trend Micro CSM for SMB. We
previously renews around $600 for 50 workstations and now they want about
$2300. This prompted me to start checking out other solutions. I did look in
old posts but they seem to all be from before Trend raised their prices -
back when it was a good deal.
I am not considering Norton because of previous experience - granted it was
with older products but everytime I see a Norton app it seems they want to
be everything to everyone and the client is loaded down with too many apps
and caused problems with other apps.
We had previously used McAfee ASAP but that caused printing problems and
each client updated from the internet on it's own rather then from a server
on the LAN. Also didn't like that there was no way to install it except from
the internet. So I am hesitant on McAfee but open if it seems to offer what
I need at a reasonable cost and reasonable administration.
I am experimenting with GFI MailEssentials and MailSecurity for antivirus
and spam blocking at the server but I am having a hard time finding desktop
protection I like. I would love to find antivirus and anti-spyware in one
app but that doesn't seem to exist. Even if they are from the same vendor
they still are separate apps. I am a minimalist when it comes to installing
stuff on desktops and I like things to be as efficient as possible. So I
would love some recomendations if you have them. I am not set on GFI for the
above but I do like them so far - especially the Beyesian scanning on the
MailEssentials.
My requirments are as follows:
> Compatible withe SBS 2000 and SBS 2003 (will be upgrading in Oct this
> year)
> All together must provide anti-virus, anti-spam and anti-spyware.
> All mail protection (virus and spam) must be at the server and integrate
> with Exchange
> Optional Mail protection at the client for POP3 clients is preferred
> Desktop protection (virus and spyware) must be installed and managed from
> the LAN with a single server that updates itself and then updates the
> clients
> Must be able to install desktop protection even if the client doesn't
> authenticate to the SBS server (other clients in the same subnet but
> logging into a different server)
> Desktop software must be as small and efficient as possible - must not
> significantly increase startup time or slow down the machine during normal
> usage.
> Must be able to manage client's permissions - i.e. prevent
> unloading/disabling/configuring of client software.
Hope that is clear enough and I look forward to hearing from you all.

I'm working thru the night
Just working thru the night
What a horrible feelin'
My server ain't right
I'm yelling out loud
So dark up above
My patches won't load
And I've had just enough!
Let the stormy clouds chase
Every spam from this place
Come on with the fix
I've a frown on my face
I search thru the web
With no solution in sight
Just working, just working thru the night

Shared Fax not showing fax header information
I have Shared Fax installed on my SBS 2000 machine and it has been
functioning perfectly for 2 years except for the fact that when the fax is
received, the fax header information is being cut off making it impossible to
read. Is there some way to adjust the margins on the .tif file that is
created when the fax is received.
