    - Profile Issue... Why for no reason what so ever does a workstation running Win XP or Windows 2K create a new profile for a user that has logged on hundreds of times before this happens 2 or 3 times a year and its a real pain to get everything back to normal.     - Small Business Server and Exchange I can not get the Exchange services to start. I have run the updates and am on SP3. The customer was hit with the blaster worm this morning.     - Migration pack Have a client that has 2 sites. Site 1 = SBS 2000 running Exchange. Site 2 = Win2K srv and ISA server. There is a VPN established between the ISA server in site 2 and a SonicWall at Site 1. They want to have Exchange servers at both sites replicating at least pub folders. As I see it, I have 2 options: #1) 1st upgrade Site1 with Upgrade Pack for SBS and install another copy of Exchange at Site 2. #2) rebuild site 1 server from scratch with Win2k and Exchange, install another copy of Exchange at site 2. With both options - upgrade Site 2 to be domain contoller with AD and use site connections within exchange to sync pub folders and for mail flow. Anyone used Migration pack? How long does it take?     - ntrtscan.exe - No Disk Hi all, I rebooted my SBS2k last night. Before doing so, I shut down all of exchange and the antivirus services. Before starting up, I rec'd this message on the console: ntrtscan.exe - No disk There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive A: I had three choices: Cancel, Try Again, and continue. I hit cancel and the server continued its reboot and came up fine with no messages. I realize that message had something to do with antivirus however, I have never before rec'd this. Could anyone tell me if this is something I can safely ignore or do I need to take some sort of action? I'm running Trend Office Scan for SBS2K as my antivirus software. Some weeks are worse than others, some email addresses worse than others. Sometimes if user A sends it to email address X outside the domain, it always gets bounced, whereas if user B sends it to the same email address it goes just fine. It happens significantly more often if someone sends an email as a delegate, on behalf of another user. SBS is running SP4, Exchange has SP3 and I have tried re-running ICW and checking a few other things. Server doesn't seem to be an open relay of any kind. Any help greatly appreciated.     - Can't access Public Folders from Exchange When trying to access the Public Folder on SBS2k we get an error message that states: Title Bar = Exchange System Manager MSG = The object is no longer available. Press F5 to refresh the display, and then try again. ID no: 80040e19 Exchange System Manager This client has two shared contact folders that can be accessed by those Outlook clients with proper rights (works ok from the client).     - How do I setup a Print Server w/Static IP on SBS2K LAN??? Hi Everyone, I'm having some serious trouble here. :( I have the HP JetDirect 500x Print Server (connected to a Laserjet 2300D Printer)...and I'm trying to set it up on the SBS2K Lan with a static IP with no success. Here's what I've done... Make a DHCP reservation within the scope at 192.168.16.240. I then use that same IP address for the static IP address for the Print Server. So my print server setup is as follows... IP ADDRESS: 192.168.16.240 SUBNET MASK: 255.255.255.0 DEFAULT GATEWAY: 192.168.16.2 The internal IP address of the server is 192.168.16.2. So ok, then I try to make the connection to the printer...and nothing seems to work. What am I doing wrong??? Kindly help.     - Problem viewing folder list On my SBS Server, whenever I open Windows explorer, I can see everything in the right hand window. However, on the left, where the folder list should be, it is completely greyed out. This is causing a little inconvenience as I want to exclude my m: drive from virus scanning but Norton will not list any drives under the exclusions option.     - Minimum disk space for an upgrade of 4.5 to W2K SBS We have an upgrade to W2K SBS and have misplaced the install book. Does anyone know how much free disk space you need to UPGRADE from 4.5 to W2K SBS? I know they say 4 Gig, but what do you actually need for the upgrade to to run?     - MS03-026 Update -- FYI Since I have loaded the patch, when I VPN to my clients network and open Remote Desktop it hangs for a bit and than I try and open another session and it goes through, but I have to cancel the first one that is trying to open...     - Adding Users - Very Slow SYSTEM: Running SBS2000 SP4, 2.8ghz CPU 1GB RAM, 120gb HD, new install. ISSUE: When adding new user thru Activer Directory Users & Groups the system takes 30 secs to display the User Name Details form after clicking on NEW USERS, in the ADD USER details and PASSWORD form the NEXT passes to the next form instantly, the create mailbox details form take 30 secs to pass to the Summary page / FINISH Screen. At this rate the product will be out of life cycle before I get my users added. Anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this. Event logs are clean.     - ISA or Hardware, VPN or PCAnywhere Hi guys I have a little setup question and I was wondering what was the general feeling regarding different setups. I have started to build a server for a customer who needs a new network. The server is running SBS 2000 minus ISA at the moment using exactly the same practices as when I build my SBS 2000 server. Both servers have a hardware firewall currently attached, both using Nat, both using internal ip of range 10.0.0.1 - 255. I would like to be able to remotely configure their server from my network saving a fair drive, for the day to day administrational tasks. First thought was to use PCAnywhere - so I went about setting up both firewalls to let though tcp port 5631 and udp port 5632 to their respective 10.0.0.x internal ip address. Now for some reason, I am having a lot of bother with this, and whist on the phone to a Symantec engineer, it was suggested that it would be easier to connect using VPN, then PCAnywhere across the VPN using internal IP addresses. Good idea I though, but I have spent a fair amount of time already 'trying' different ways of connecting to my customers server, and I decided that its time to see if anyone else has any ideas how to solve the dilemma with less drama than I've seen already! A couple of related questions: 1. Do you setup the VPN between to the two SBS servers (and will SBS allow this), or is it ok to set it up from one client machine to the other server? 2. Does it matter that they are a) both using the same address range, and b) using different AD domain names? 3. Should I be relying on the hardware firewall to accept incoming VPN connections, or should I have junked it years ago and had faith in the ISA for VPN connections as well as general security?     - Exchange server problems In SBS Admin Console (Back Office Manager) only the 'Shares..' produces any info in the right screen. The 'To Do List' window comes up blank; click on 'Users', 'Security Groups' etc, and the Right window stays blank, and the status line reads 'Query Failed'. 'Server Status' gives no info Exchange server dead; services all appear to be running but if click on properties, nothing happens. try close services window, message comes up saying 'close properties window', which is difficult since there arn't any visible. Force closure via Task Manager. Looking at other postings, it may be that others have similar problems. AV = McAffee enterprise version. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.... PS - Don't e-mail me!!!!!     - Exchange Services Failing to Start Three of the Exchange Services (MTA Stacks, Information Store and System Attendant) fail to start on reboot of a Windows 2000 SBS machine. Does anyone know what may cause these three services to fail to start? They can be started manually. If left set to Automatic start in the services list they fail to restart on next reboot. The Application Event Log contains several errors in relation to the Metabase Update service failing to start. The machine is the DC in a small network with no other servers or networks involved.     - upgrading to dynamic disks I have a server with two hard drives fitted. One is configured with two primary partitions (C, and D), the other is unpartitioned. I want to upgrade to dynamic disks so that I can create a mirror set. Will the conversion to dynamic disks affect the data on my disk or the partitions? Any help appreciated.     - Access Problems Logging to SBS2000 Server Anybody please help me. I have a problem of a user named Dorji logging onto a SBS2000 server (drukfood) from a Windows XP computer(Client) of being unable to get accessed to the network facilities giving the following error messages: \\drukfood is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. But a user named Dorji can log-on to the network without any problem from any other computers other than this Windows XP computer. Further, any other users can use this windows XP computer to log-on to the network but the problem is only with Dorji from this computer.     - Perflib error Hi, I have been getting this error on the SBS 2000 " The Collect Procedure for the "PSched" service in DLL "C:\WINNT\system32\pschdprf.dll" generated an exception or returned an invalid status. Performance data returned by counter DLL will be not be returned in Perf Data Block. Exception or status code returned is data DWORD 0." Due to this my scheduled backups dont run as scheuled. I have also been getting this other error in the event viewer preceeding the above error " The open procedure for service "PerfDisk" in DLL "C:\WINNT\system32\perfdisk.dll" has taken longer than the established wait time to complete. There may be a problem with this extensible counter or the service it is collecting data from or the system may have been very busy when this call was attempted."     - Connecting to Remote SQL I attempting to connect an XP Proffessional Client to a Remote SQL. The XP machine is on a SBS 2000 network. I have read previous messages and have successfully Defined a Protocol Created a Rule that deploys the protocol Created an Outward bound Packet Filter. The forth step as I understand is too ======== Use the SQL Client Network Utility to define an Alias for the remote server, making sure you specify TCP/IP as the connection type, and specify port 1433, don't leave it on dynamic. ======== The SBS server does not have SQL installed, so there is no utility? The question(s) are Is there another way of doing the above? Do I have to do it at all, if there is no SQL installed or Do I have to install SQL to get past this point?     - Clients not able to login - licensing question. I have a client with a SBS2K server and 10 CALS. They also have 10 workstations and 1 could often not log on. I figured it was just running out of CALS every now and again so we purchased 5 more CALS, so now we have 15 CALS with 10 PC's. The problem still occurs though. After a lengthy site visit I found out I'd get to 9 PC's logging on fine and then the 10th would not log on. If I log 1 PC off then the 10th PC can get on but the PC I logged off can't log on anymore. I have restarted the server and down all PC's twice, removed WINS and DNS from the DHCP options. I have also reapplied W2K SP3 with no success. I'm not putting SP4 on due to problems with it. Does any1 have any ideas on why it's not letting more than 9 users on when I have more than enough CALs? All PC's are Windows 98SE. I haven't tried it with a Windows 2000/XP machine yet. The server is not connected to the internet in any way.     - Newbie SBS 4.5 Migration I have to migrate a single server SBS 4.5 installation to a 2 server installation. The second server will be running SQL Server 2000 exclusively. The first server will be running exchange and providing fax services for the network. Essentially I am splitting the SBS functions over two servers to maximize the performance of SQL server. SQL Server 2000 seems to require a server Windows Server so I guess I'll have to run that on the second machine. The first machine will either run SBS 2000 or Windows Server 2000, depending upon whether I can get the shared fax facilities in Windows Server 2000. If that 's the case, then I'll just run that and Exchange without any SBS overhead. Any comments on the above would be helpful. Especially those that might recommend a direction to go in and a means of migrating from SBS 4.5 with a minimum of pain. I know MS has some knowledge base materials on SBS 4.5-2000 migration but I haven't found any that refers to SBS to Windows Server + Exchange migration. Thanks for your help. Robin.     - New2SBS I've been looking into sbs as a solution for a small client currently using outlook on their personal computers. I would like some help in answering a couple of questions befor I pitch this solution to them. There are currently 5 people working in this office web is served offsite and so is email they will get dsl but curently hitch Hicking off another network and SBS looks perfect for them. 1. How easy is SBS 2000 to install? 2. How would I migrate their current outlook email settings to the exchange server? 3. How could I migrate all their contacts into one place? 4. Can everybody see each others calendar and set up appointments? 5. Do I need a cheap Switch/Router for them 6. Nice server can handle it all 2 nics. 7. Does this version have Web access for email? I know thats allot to ask but I would really like to know befor I get started. One more....     - Services not starting HAve just rebooted an SBS2k server and have the event log full of errors. I can still access the server remotely by TS. Majority of main services are not running including exchange and web proxy and the server is taking ages to restart and login. When I enter the event viewer I can't open individual events to see more details on the errors. The same is true when looking at the services. Although I can stop some that are running I can't open their properties. Event log consists of mainly 'Service Control Manager' errors 7005, 7024 and 7023 to start with after a reboot together with DHCP 1006 and 1008.     - ISA help please This may sound odd, but I think my server is picking on me. We have SBS2000 with 4 Win2K Pro and 1 XP-Pro clients on our network. Until recently all users were able to access the internet just fine, but now my server has decided that the user on the XP machine can not. This applies only to one uswr on the XP machine though, when logging on as Administrator from this machine all is well. Hence, this one user is blocked from internet access, getting the following error message every time IE is opened: 403 Forbidden - The ISA Server denies the specified Uniform Resource Locator (URL). (12202) Internet Security and Acceleration Server I have searched for restrictions in the ISA snap in, as well as in the AD user listing for this user, but I can not find a thing.     - Mac's on Networks - how to get pop mail? I have a fairly unique situation. SBS running a company, exchange hosting their mail, all using PC's - hunky dory. I have a division of that company using some Macs, with a different mail address requiring POP mail access and access to the same files on the server. PC's have no problem with 2 profiles in outlook & Mac's have no problem logging into network for internet & file access. Problem I have is how to get pop mail access on Mac OSX without resorting to VirtualPC (no budget!). I can add smtp mail to their existing profiles and use outlook for mac, but sending mail reverts to the exchange.local default outgoing email address.     - Licensing Questions My client has SBS2000 installed at their main office, 30 employees. The client also has several remote offices, with 3-5 employees at each location. We have installed Firewall to Firewall VPN with one remote office to the main office for file transfer. The remote offices all use either POP3 or OWA to access email. My questions are: 1. How is a VPN connection "counted" regarding to licensing? The Firewall-to-Firewall connection is one connection with 2 users behind the remote firewall (peer- to-peer networked). Does the IPSec VPN connection affect licensing different than the PPTP VPN connection? 2. Given a fast VPN connection, we are considering switching from retrieving email through the POP3 server and using the Exchange server for the remote users.     - licensing and browsing I am having several issues with a new SBS2000 installation. One problem is that at various times certain workstations (if not all workstations) cannot browse the domain. The SBS2K box can always browse the domain. For all computers other than the SBS box, the domain is listed under "Microsoft Windows Network" but no computers are listed under it. Clicking the domain does nothing (does not produce any error messages either). This server is in a "production" environment, so I am not able to reboot it at will, but I believe that previous reboots have made browsing possible for a limited amount of time. I have a second Win2000 server (that I think I would like to also be a master browser) that I have promoted to DC that periodically gets the "The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{<big GUID-looking number>}. The backup browser is stopping." error. Drives mapped to shares on either server (from any workstation or server) seem to function normally. I am also having a licensing problem, so I am wondering if it is related to the browsing issue. I am periodically getting the "The product Windows Server is out of licenses. Use License Manager from the Administrative Tools folder for more information on which users are out of compliance and how many licenses should be purchased." error message on the SBS2K machine. I have 25 CALs (the normal 5 plus a 20 CAL add pack) with less than 25 client computers (including the second Win2K server) in the network. Most clients are XP pro (SP1). There are 4 Win2K pro (SP4) machines and two NT4 (SP6) machines. All Win2K computers in the network have SP4 and I do not use Veritas backup software, so the licensing issues related to these products should not apply. Clicking "about" from the SBS administrator console does indeed show 25 as the number of licenses. License Manager on the second Win2K server shows: --Purchase history is completely blank. --(On the Products view tab) Windows server as having 0 "per seat purchased", 30 "per seat allocated", 0 "per server purchased", and -5 "per server reached"; Microsoft BackOffice is all zeros. --(On the Clients (Per Seat) tab) All domain users are listed with a 1 for "Unlicensed Usage" and a 0 for "Licensed Usage"; all "computers" (with a $ appended to the name) are also listed with a 1 under "Unlicensed Usage". I think the 30 "per seat allocated" listed on the Products view tab is related to this because the sum of the users and "computers" (with a $ on the end) is 30. Each client workstation is evidently being counted twice -- once for the user and once for the "computer". --At various times, the browsing difficulty mentioned above prevents me from seeing any computers on the Server Browser tab, but when it is visible, the SBS2K shows "per server" mode for 30 concurrent connections. I'm not sure where this "30" is coming from unless somehow it is adding the 25 from the SBS2K with the 5 that come with standard Win2K server. --I attempted to create a license group, but it appeared to do nothing more than change the icon next to the users from a head to a yellow warning (exclamation mark) symbol. I also attempted to "add" licenses. License manager accepted my input (I received no error messages), but the Purchase History tab is still blank. I don't remember ever selecting "per server" mode during the SBS installation. I know I wouldn't have consciously selected "per server" because I want both servers to be in "per seat" mode. Can SBS2K operate in "per seat" mode? I thought that it could because I have read that the SBS2K CALs allow clients to connect to other Win2K servers in the same domain without the need for addition Win2K server CALs. If SBS2K can operate in "per seat" mode, and if my SBS2K box is in "per server" mode, how do I change it to "per seat" (license manager and license applet in control panel do not work in SBS)?     - VPN & PCAnywhere problem I have a SBS that people log into through the VPN. However, when people are logged in through the VPN they cannot use the PCAnywhere or even ping that computer. I have tried pinging the client computer and I can't reach it through my client; however, I can ping it from the main server. The VPN client is coming in on IP x.1.x.x, however all the local clients in the lan are x.0.x.x. I'm not sure if this means anything. If anyone could suggest anything it would be greatly appreciated. Not that I know. Just ask the users to use that option (in File menu) to
shut down Outlook. After that, insist a bit more.
