Article 283268
Hi! This article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283628 gives a little
note at the bottom
"Note: You will not be able to use a PPTP connection by using either the
Winsock Proxy Client, or the ISA Firewall Client. Clients will require a
Gateway address to provide a network route through the ISA server for PPTP
connections to be made successfully. "
How do I configure a gateway address? My laptop does use the ISA firewall
client.

ISA server could not be detected?
This is the message I get after the SBS client has been
connected a few minutes. When the client first logs in,
the message is: "Configured to use ISA Server servername".
I am talking about the firewall client icon on the systray
(when you fly over with the mouse). Ie works fine, but is
a little slow, and if I right-click on the icon, and
select configure, I can select update and the message
changes to "Configured to use ISA Server servername"
again. But, in a few minutes, it changes to "ISA server
could not be detected".
Any ideas? Is this normal?
Thanks in advance. Tag: Joining SBS 2003 Domain Tag: 134524
Do you need Windows 2000 Under SBS 2000?
If you buy the full version of SBS 2000 does Windows 2000 Server come in the
package? Do you have to purchase the OS separately? If so, do you need to
purchase CALs for it in addition to the CALs you purchase for SBS?
Thanks!! Tag: Joining SBS 2003 Domain Tag: 134515
Web Pages
I am having an awful time trying to get SBS2000 to accept
a webpage from an outside user and to run extension of
any variety. Could someone point me to explicit
instructions to create a new website (in addition to the
default site already on the system), add the extensions
to it (preferably 2002), and set up access for an off
site web developer to upload web pages to it. I have
used work arounds to load pages locally up to this point,
but have never had the extensions work properly from any
computer off site. I must be doing something basic
wrong, but i can't see it.

Slow system shudown after In-place upgrade.
I have noticed a common symptom of several SBS 2000 upgrades from 4.5. The
systems take a long time (5-10 minutes) to shutdown. If I stop the Exchange
server it shuts down in a reasonable amount of time (less than 2 min).
I have successfully upgraded 3 separate SBS 4.5 to 2000 and have noticed
this in each case. I have not noticed this in any of my fresh installs of
SBS.
Any ideas?
Could it have anything to do with service dependencies?
Thanks,

Disaster recovery plan
Given my client's limited budget for a near line server here is what I
proposed. If anyone has any comments/flames/gotchas please let me know.
Current config:
SBS 2K Sp1 on a PIII built upon SCSI HD's (2 X 72 gig). Currently we have 3
partitions on each drive and each is mirrored in software. Backup is
provided by ARCServe 2000, minus any agents. Exchange is backed up to a
file via a scheduled ntbackup job and then ARCServe grabs this file.
Proposal:
Install a removable large IDE drive, periodically ghost the entire
server (paritition the large IDE first with 3 partitions) using ghost and
partition to partition ghost.
Disaster recovery:
If the server dies and it is bad, throw the IDE drive in a system
similiar in specs to existing server, bring it up on IDE, and then dump data
back with ARCServe, dump online Exchange backup file to the HD and then use
ntbackup to restore Exchange.
Ideas? Thoughts? Bad idea?

Using demon Broadband (UK) with SMTP mail - advice needed
OK, I am going to take the plunge and go for SMTP mail instead of using the
pop connector. We are about to go from ISDN dial up to broadband, our ISP is
demon internet, this will also be a clean SBS2000 install.
If I am going for SMTP mail do I need their (demon internet's) "NAT" or "No
NAT" option? As I understand it, my SBS2k server will be taking care of NAT
so does it matter which product I use?
Thanks in advance..

With the increase of virus email posts and individuals scanning this NG for

Slow scrolling in Event Viewer etc.
Suddenly screen scrolling (e.g in Event Viewer, dhcp control etc.) on the
server is much slower (1/3 the previous speed).
Reboot does not fix. Task manager shows c 4% proc activity only. This is
first time I have ever noticed a slow down on this machine which was not
fixed by a reboot.
Only recent activity - installing SUS 1.1 for the first time a week ago
(have downloaded patches but not actually 'approved' and rolled them out
yet).
Any ideas? - memory is 1gb, 2 proc machine.

I used to not have to go into the server room, I could just open a browser

went to windowsupdate and got the latest IE, and I can no longer connect to

Does anyone know what happened?

Exchange or SQL on different server
Hi all,
Before switching off in droves, this isn't the usual question about
SBS2K media and installing it elsewhere. Let me explain:
I have a client who is looking at adding an extra server to their
SBS2K set-up to spread some load, primarily because SQL is vey
precious to them.
What I want to know is this. Assuming licensing is all correct, is
there a problem with running a new installation of either Exchange or
SQL on the new server. The SBS install of either of them would be
removed from the original server. So for example I could end up with
the original server running with "SBS" E2K and the new server running
"full product" SQL2K.
My biggest concern is whether Exchange would be the biggest stumbling
block if run elsewhere, because of the AD tie in. On the face of it it
should be like anywhere else running "normal" AD and E2K, but SBS does
do some bizarre things!
Thanks in advance to those of you who i) stuck with the description
ii) can understand it and have an answer!!!!

New URL
We have been using the email format someone@elmmax.co.uk for some time and
elmmax.co.uk is the domain that the SBS server is setup to use.
We are changing the firm name and in future will use someone@elmhirst.biz. I
am not reconfiguring the server and email will still be coming to both
addresses. I can get the routing of email addresses sorted by editing
individually the user properties page to add an extra smtp address to the
list of e-mail addresses.
To do this to everyone is a pain and I will have to remember to do this
everytime we add a new user.
There must be an easier way to do this globally so that mail addressed to
fred@elmhirst.biz ends up in the mailbox for fred@elmmax.co.uk
Any ideas?

ISA server and newsgroups
Hello,
I've installed ISA server on my 2000 server. When I connect remotely, I can
browse the internet and get my pop and smtp mail. My problem is I can't get
to the newsgroup servers in outlook express. This is the error message I
get:
Account: msnews.microsoft.com
Server: msnews.microsoft.com
port: 119
SSL: 0
Code: 800ccc0d
I'm typing this message from the 2000 server on which I setup ISA server. I
did setup the port to be opened in IP Packet Filters and that's why I'm able
to send this from the server. I don't know why I can't send this from the
client. Any help is appreciated.

Viewing shared faxes on XP Pro
I have previously posted several requests for help on
viewing shared faxes on XP Pro. I have been advised to
see article 316418 on every occasion
I have done all that is listed in 316418. I am able to
pull up the fax console; but I am unable to view(open to
view) the
faxes that are listed. I can print them but I cannot view
them. I get an hourglass for several seconds; but the
viewer does not open.
The program works properly except for the fact that I
cannot view it.
I can go to my server(SBS 2000) or any win98 2nd edition
machine
and view without any problem. Those machines use the
Imaging for WIndows Preview program. Is there any place
that I can download and install that program to my XP
machines?

Can send but not receive
I had another posting over the weekend "Oh No..." this is an extension of
those issues.
Background:
Machine had been hacked in a remote office - one user password stolen.
Using that on Port25 to send thru the SBS server. Disabled user account and
began cleaning machine.
Following Susan and Jim's advice and the MS article they pointed to me - I
was able to successfully clean the vs1 bad mail folder. it only had 7GB of
messages (over 400,000 total in the last 30 days).
After doing that I attempted to secure the machine by removing the check box
"allow any computer to relay that authenticates...". per Jim's suggestion I
also removed the IP's listed above.
I noticed no mail was flowing in-bound.
Reran the ICW - it replaced the Ip's that I removed other settings were left
alone. But again - no inbound email was received.
So now I go to my full-time job and attempt to send an email to the other
domain. Does not bounce. Log in via VPN - it is not in my in-box. Nothing
inbound shows up. Can send outbound just fine.
I grabbed the logs and they looked as follows:

Multiple 2003 SBS
Hi,
Is anybody running multiple small business server. My issue is that we need
to run MS Exchange and MS SQL on 2 separate servers. The most cost effective
way to purchase this is by buying 2 SBS packages. I know that this is not
possible with SBS 4.5. Can anybody confirm if this is possible with SBS 2000
or 2003

Printing problem in TS on Win2k Server
Hi there,
I have a win2k box running as a terminal server, the problem is that when
a user prints a document the document prints fine, however the document
stays in the printer cue showing up as printed, and then it randomly prints
again later in the day.
does anyone have any ideas?
other useful info is as follows:
Server is win2k (standard configuration, adsl through a cisco router)
Printer are HP 1200 (using M$ fix for printing through USB-Dot4)
clients are a mix of Windows ME & XP
Server is running SP4 with all latest patches.
I have tried resetting the permissions on the spooler directory in in
system32 etc, but this hasn't made any difference.
I have turned of Bi-Directional support for the printer and am waiting to
see if this has made a difference.
I have checked all permissions (at all levels - user, group, accounts etc),
all seem to be okay.
I have searched extensivelly through both Google & Microsoft but not found
anything yet.
Thanks in advance

IP config with DMZ
Hi,
I'm wondering whether I have NAT setup correctly as I just
read an article that says I should point router NAT
translation to the INTERNAL NIC of SBS2000. I also want to
include a new server in the DMZ to handle mail using
SpamLion, before mail is allowed to go to exchange.
I have setup our network layout like this:
internet <-> Cisco ADSL Router <-> SBSserver ext. NIC <->
SBS server int. NIC <-> Workstations.
on the ADSL router I have an external IP in the
80.xxx.xxx.xxx range
On the internal NIC of the ADSL router I configured
172.26.0.100
The external NIC of the SBS server has 172.26.0.99
The internal NIC of the SBS server has 192.168.16.2
All the workstations are in 192.168.16.xxx
We run intrusion detection and firewall on the Cisco ADSL
router as well.
The first question is:
- Should I NAT to the internal NIC of the SBS server, on
the ADSL router? I have strange behaviour of the ISA
server, that suspects rules being not applied. Please find
current config below:
ip nat inside source list 1 interface ATM0.1 overload
ip nat inside source static tcp 172.26.0.99 53 80.33.51.60
53 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 172.26.0.99 80 80.33.51.60
80 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 172.26.0.99 25 80.33.51.60
25 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 172.26.0.99 443
80.33.51.60 443 extendable
ip nat inside source static tcp 172.26.0.25 25 80.33.51.60
25 extendable
The second question is:
- If I'm going to put in an extra server for SpamLion, I
would configure it with a DMZ IP of p.e. 172.26.0.101 and
have smtp port traffic first go to the new server and only
after approval to Exchange. What do I need to configure in
SBS2000 to have ISA accept incoming mail from that new
server's IP?
Thanks!

NEWBIE:- non-NAT and smtp query?
Hi everyone,
Following continuous problems with the SBS POP3 connector I am upgrading my
ADSL connection to allow incoming SMTP mail and have my own mail server.
Trouble is the smtp option is non-NAT and I am unsure about how to set it
up. I just need email and Internet access for all clients. Previously I just
had one IP address as the POP3 mail connection was NAT based. I have now
been issued with four IP addresses by my ISP. I understand I need one for
the SMTP mail server, but what do I do with the other three?
Obviously without the protection of NAT I will need to use the ISA firewall
which I do anyway. My router book and ISP helpfiles are all geared towards
issuing each client with its own IP address in a standard non-sbs type
network. All my 17 clients are issued addresses by the DHCP server in the
range 10.0.0.1- upwards presumably this is unchanged. Is there a good step
by step guide to setting it up? Do I need to disable NAT in my router which
has NAT enable by default?
Many thanks, David Tag: Joining SBS 2003 Domain Tag: 134418
Urgent need more C: drive space
I have Small Business Server 2000 and i have two

The problem is that i am desperatly running out of space
on the C: drive. I have all of the programs printers and

is forever increasing.
Is there a way of increasing the C: drive or perhaps
moving the location of Exchange to the extended partition

EMail usage
I need to give a client stats on his internet usage (very
high ISDN phone bill is the reason). It must be divided
into normal browsing and email traffic. The email traffic
must pinpoint the users traffic as well.
The report needs to give daily usage, which will then be

Does SBS2K have such reporting built into it?
I know years back i used Crystal reports 7 built in
Exchange reports to do this. Alas i do not have it

problems with groups and certain emails
I have a serious problem on our SBS2000 system. When I send a normal email via a POP3account, with outlook 2002 everything works fine. But when I want to send a Task(mail) over the internet - even to the same person - this (task)mail is getting queued by the Exchange server. I have the same problem when I send mail to a group of internetmailadresses. When I look in the queuelist, I see on the propertiestab that there has been a problem with the DNS server. Looking if the DNS server is installed correctly, I get a positive result. When I invite a person (send a appointmentmail) over the internet, things work fine.
Anybody who has an idea?

Kucinich backer hacks CBS News site
The CBS News site was apparently hijacked by a supporter
of Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich on
Friday morning. Visitors to the CBSNews.com Web site were
presented with a text message and a video promoting the
candidacy of the congressman from Cleveland. A CBS
representative said the company was "looking into
the problem." The network appeared to remedy the
situation shortly after it began.

Symantec on alert after Net activity surge
Symantec's security service has been placed on
alert in response to a substantial jump in domain
name server-related activity across the globe. The
computer-security specialist has stepped-up efforts
to monitor network ports associated with domain name
servers. Vincent Weafer, senior director of US-based
Symantec Security Response, said the company's DeepSight
firewall sensors had begun reporting an unusually large
volume of networks events commonly associated with DNS-
activity.

Trojan hijacks web browsers
A Trojan that exploits an Internet Explorer vulnerability
is capable of allowing attackers to hijack browser
behaviour, anti-virus firms warn. The QHosts (Delude)
Trojan can't spread by itself. Users only become infected
if they visited a maliciously constructed website
containing code which allows the malware to run.
This code used a critical object data vulnerability
in Internet Explorer to execute.

Microsoft security suit raises thorny questions
A lawsuit faulting Microsoft for security defects
in its products has added a new front in the software
giant's battle against vulnerabilities in its software.
Microsoft plans to fight a lawsuit that claims the
company is responsible for privacy leaks that stem
from vulnerabilities in its software. Bottom line:
The case raises a host of legal issues, including
whether Microsoft's monopoly in the software market
should preclude it from escaping liability for
flaws in its products.

Ballmer slams hackers as criminals
"Hackers are criminals," Ballmer says, plain and

"Hackers are people who are causing hundreds of

US intros tougher sentences for computer crimes
US authorities are to introduce harsher sentences
for convicted computer criminals starting next month.
The stiffer penalties, developed by the US Sentencing
Commission to comply with a Congressional bill last
year, are designed to reflect the serious damage
caused by crackers and virus writers. However, the
supposed deterrent effect of the tougher approach
have already been questioned by the most famous
former computer felon, Kevin Mitnick, who argues
that the measures are unlikely to have the desired
deterrent effect.

Way OT
Anyone know of a way to recover a sheet within an excel spreadsheet???
There is no backup of the actual file, it has been resaved to its original
file name, and I think I am out of luck.
Client accidentally deleted a very important sheet from within their xls
file, saved it, and now needs it back. Of course that was while at home
where they dont have ANY backup plan....gotta love those home users that
refuse to VPN in before working....
Anyway, I have used programs to recover deleted files and what not, was
curious if anyone has had experience/luck with something like this.
Once again, thanks in advance,

log off, save files
Has anyone implemented the winexit.scr from the 2k resource cd?
I have a 40 or so XP client network of SBS2K and would like to use this to
automatically logoff a user after 60min.
Anything I need to look out for? The only catch I see at the moment is
implementing keystokes (to emulate) closing/saving files before forcing the
logoff for each user. This is where I need help...MS doesnt have much, (kb
31499) from my quick KB search, about registry entries to do this. Will
autosave save the document if it hasnt been already saved once??? If so, ill
keep quiet and just use that, if not, its lame and wont do what I really
need it to do, which is save the document before forcing a logoff no matter
what.
I have looked into the third party products that do it, (sdpluspro, winoff)
and they work awesome. I really dont want to worry about customized installs
(or the fact that its a third party product) when I know its a simple
registry entry on the client machine that I can push out through policies.
Thanks!

Windows 98 Roaming Profile Problem
Hi All,
I am having a problem using windows 98 roaming profiles. Every so often
when logging in the user is presented with the desktop of the default user,
with the shortcuts to the home folders of the users who have logged in
displayed on the desktop along with the company folder. Some of these
shortcut are not able to be to removed and are shown as invalid in the
properties. Click on the folder for the logged will restore the desktop.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

RRAS service fails to start /Event 20103
After reading and following the suggestions in Q299013 to
get RRAS started on my SBS2000 server, I've started
pulling out my (too sparse) hair. It is apparently unable
to load iprtrmgr.dll, though the dll is in the right path,
and all registry keys are per specs. The final
recommendation in that article is to remove and reinstall
TCP/IP. I'd just as soon pull out the rest of my hair!
Have any of you out there come across and resolved this
problem in a less-catastrophic way? I'm trying to set it
up for VPN access. I'm running the server as a DC with
Exchange 2000 Server, separate external and internal
NIC's, an IDSL router from our ISP, and 9 workstations.
What gets me is that I was running it successfully till a
few months ago, and I'm not aware of anything happening at
the server end (my client PC at home, at about that time,
suffered a fried I/O dept resulting from a power spike).
I'd really appreciate your input . . . Tag: Joining SBS 2003 Domain Tag: 134387
NTBackup stopped before completing
I was using NTBackup (via the wizard) to back up the server to a hard drive
(drives/files, exchange store, and Systat state). About half way through it
stopped the backup, reporting no more space available, eventhough there was
still 27GB free (and it had only use about 4GB out of an estimated 10GB of
needed storage). Any ideas what might be going on? (file size limit?)
Thanks for the help. -Pat Tag: Joining SBS 2003 Domain Tag: 134381
Cumulative Patch for October 2003 froze SBS
Hey everyone,
I installed the Cumulative Patch for October 2003 on one of my servers, an
SBS2000, SP1 (still have SP3 on Win2k.) Well, the server froze right after
it was installed (via Windows Update.) I have not had a server freeze like
this in a long time. Has anyone experienced the problem. First freeze in six
months. I don't know if the patch installed but I checked afterwards and it
did install. I am pretty pissed off at this point.

Only 2 months of faxes are being stored
Hi everyone,
Another curly one - we have a client that uses the Fax server on the SBS2000
box to send lots and lots of faces out, except it drops them off after 2
months.
Any ideas on how to extend this out?
Many thanks,

2 NIC Setup for SBS - Customer Reasons Why?
I have quite a number of installations with SBS2000 now and after a
disasterous first try in 2001, all since have been with the
"recommended" two NIC solution (I also use a hardware firewall as
well, ususally just a basic router with some port forwarding).
Anyway, I recently encoutered a customer situation where I needed to
"justify" why setup the SBS box as the "gateway" to the world, while I
already had a "firewall"/router. "Why pass all that traffic through
the server?" was the question I got from this person over and over.
I did the security aspect, with NAT within a NAT.
I did the proxy cache for speed aspect.
I did the ISA Server allowing packet filtering and reporting.
"What if people still needed to use the internet if the server goes
down was another" - Now on that one I tried to keep a straight face
and told him that I don't think that will be a problem, and if it is,
keeping your people on the web is the least of your problems....
What I am asking from all of you "experts"...Is what would have been
your top reasons (Customer reasons - not too technical now
people...they have to understand it remember....)
Here's the rules....It has to be in an elevator format...if the reason
takes longer than two minutes to explain, it doesn't count....hehehehe
Let the games begin!

License Manager
Hi! Another event log error.
LicenseService
Event ID" 202
I believe all my licenses are correct. The error window informs to search
in the License Manager from Administrator Tools. When I try to do this, it
says it's not available for SBS.
I can go to the server on the Administrators Console and hit help (I think
it was help), anyway it said we have 35 licenses which is correct.
What license could it be referring to?
I've been trying to get VPN or TS connections going. We do have 5 TS
licenses, but how do I know what license it is referring to.
Do I sound confused? I am. Any help would be appreciated.

NNTPSVC
Hi! My server's system log is being overrun with EventID 420/421 for

with me not being able to access this newsgroup from the office.
Any ideas?
Anything I read says to stop the NNTPSVC and set it to manual.

Cannot Access Exchange Server
Hi,
We have recently had a few problems with MSExchange
logins. When trying to access Outlook on certain
workstations it just times-out and cannot access mailbox.
Error say 'server is unavailable' appears, giving options
to workoffline, try again & cancel. Sometimes if we try
again, it will connect, but usually it just won't. Not
sure why, but on all other workstations everything is
fine? Tag: Joining SBS 2003 Domain Tag: 134325
