Hi All:

This morning our internet connections from our SBS server
went south. I have checked the ISP connection and the
DSL modem by using a laptop to connect to the internet
through the DSL modem, service works fine. Our setup is
as follows: SBS with 2 NIC's, router (Netgear), DSL modem
(Actiontec). I have checked the IP addresses and nothing
appears changed from last Friday when everything was
running fine. I have even rerun the ICW hoping that
would solve the problem but still cannot connect to the
internet. I hope that someone can give me some
direction to solve my problem.

A second issue is that in our event log I am receiving
Event ID errors 1126, and warning id 1655. I have read
KD318170 and it refers to installing the latest service
pack. I have installed SBS SP1a which should include the
latest. Would a reinstall of SP1a solve the problem?

Any help would be appreciated. I am sure that I have not
been specific enough so will provide any additional
nformation that may be needed.

Thanks in advance

Gerald P

Can you post the ipconfig/all from the server? Which error do you get when
you try to connect from the server?

Hi Marina:

First of all thanks for assisting me with my delima. The
ipconfig from the server is as follows:

Microsoft Windows 2000 [Version 5.00.2195]
(C) Copyright 1985-2000 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ipconfig /all

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : ntserver1.com

Ethernet adapter Intel Fast Ethernet LAN Controller -

We have been able to resolve the down internet problem
through contact with Qwest and trial and error but have a
question.

1. Our ISP (Qwest) requires that we have DHCP enabled to
automatically detect the modems IP settings, however, as
you can see from above DHCP is disabled. We have
manually set the IP addresses as this is what the router
requires. Can we keep our internet connection/modem
running without enabling DHCP/automatic IP address
detection?

Thanks again for your reply.

Gerald P.

Hi Gerald,

Did you check the bindingorder of the nics and made sure the internal nic is
on top?
On the internal nic, TCP/IP, Advanced, tab DNS, make sure that 'register in
DNS' and 'add primary suffix' are checked.
On the external nic they should be unchecked. On the external nic only 1
DNS-entry will do.
On your router make sure that the LAN-IP is set to the gateway IP of your
external nic. Your router should take care of getting an IP from your ISP.
Therefor it is not necessary (and not wanted) that the external nic should
be DHCP-enabled.

Its Me Again:

I have followed your suggestions and made the changes.
First, in reponse to the binding order, the internal NIC
was on top, at least we had that correct. I had used
your website to gain the information in setting up a
system with 2 NICs. Thanks for a helpful website.

The other burning question that I had related to
the "global catalog" error. The error event ID was #1126
and then warning ID #1655. As I previously stated I have
looked at the KB article that refers to installing the
latest SP. I installed SP1a in January 2004. Should I
reinstall? Any solutions I will gladly accept.

Regards,

Gerald P.

The directory service will use the locator to try find an
available global catalog server for the next operation
that requires one.

The record data is the status code.
Data:
0000: 6a 21 00 00 j!..

As I had memtioned, there was a referral to article
KB318170 which suggests installing the latest service
pack. We are running SP1a.

Again thanks for all your time.

Gerald P.
