Exchange 2000 Install Issues
After install SBS2000 I noticed Exchange Server did not
install. So I read some knowledgebase articles to install
Exchange Server. So I went into Add/Remove Programs and
selected SBS2000. I am now at the Component Selection
screen. I try and install Exchange Server and I get a
popup that states: Before this component can be modified,
all parent components must have an action selected. So I
go to change the action for Microsoft Exchange 2000 and my
options are: None (Installed), Reinstall, Remove,
Change. I select Reinstall and now I don't receive the
popup, but when I try and install the components the only
option is: ---. If I try and remove I get an error that
users are in the mailbox store. Please Help!
Thanks,

SBS re-install questions...
We are running SBS2000 with around 30 Windows 2000 Pro
clients.
The Dell PowerEdge which SBS2000 sits on is non-RAID,
although we do full tape backups every night. So
therefore, I am to order a new Dell PowerEdge, install a
fresh copy of SBS2000, patch the box and migrate the
Exchange mailboxes over using Exmerge.
I have read the Migration documents on the MS Site, but I
have some questions:
1. Can we have Exchange2000 on a separate box?
2. What are the steps for the migration..is there an
updated copy somewhere? I believe the document on the MS
site is quite old
If someone could answer the above, it would be very much
appreciated.

Exchange Server
I am trying to email out to persons who have the same isp
as myself. My exchange server is kicking the mail back at
me saying these addresses are undeliverable. I have smtp
connectors and pop3 connectors set up using earthlink as
my domain. E-mail addresses with earthlink as the domain
are coming back as undeliverable. All other mail is
working both coming and going.
Do I need to set up a special connector for my isp domain
email clients?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Network Connectivity
SBS2000 w/ 2 nic, Client Win2000
Have 2 issues, not sure if they are related.
Just installed a Sharp AR-M280 network printer that has static IP of
192.168.16.250 that is constantly dropping off LAN. Try to ping and it
times out.
Have adjusted and turned off power saving features but it still looses
connection with LAN.
Once you turn it off and back on then it is recognized on the LAN (can be
pinged from server or
workstations).
Also, when I leave Outlook Express 6 running for an extended length of time
(while watching this newsgroup) it is getting an error message "The TCP/IP
connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server." Once I close and
open OE it is fine (for a while).
Any ideas? Tag: Internet Gateway Tag: 132966
Cisco VPN and SBS 2000
I hope I can find an answer for this. I am trying to get a connection
to a SBS 2000 server over a VPN.
I have a Small Business Server 2000 network at the office. The
Internal IP range is 10.0.0.x. The server is 10.0.0.1 and the clients
are assigned similar IP addresses.
The other network card is plugged into the Cisco router. The IP
addresses are 192.168.1.1 for the router, and 192.168.1.2 for the
internal NIC.
The other end of the Cisco router VPN is at a home office. The router
there is 192.168.2.1 and the computer it is connected to is
192.168.2.2.
The ISP that manages the routers assure me that the VPN is working
fine. I can PING both ends of the VPN, but I cannot browse.
If I type \\192.168.1.2\share, I get an error message saying that it
cannot find it. I know this share exists though.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? Tag: Internet Gateway Tag: 132961
Assigning my internet Domain name to Exchange
I have my local domain as (mydomain.local). I bought a
domain name ( mydomain.com).
I pointed my MX record to my server and still I can not
receive E-mails from internet clients. Do I have to
contact my Domain vendor (Network solutions)?
Also, do I have to create an A record pointing to my
external address or my exchange server?

Exchange Password Problem
Hi,
I have one user (who happens to be the MD) who is having problems logging
into exchange remotely. Everytime she tries to log into exchange through
outlook over a VPN (PPTP) connection is keeps asking her for her exchange
password and then rejects it. I've nuked her account so that I was sure it
wasn't anything to do with the server and surprise surprise... it doesn't..
Does anyone know what might be causing the problem and how to fix it?

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this but
we're using SBS 2000 and one of my colleagues, who is

Anyone have any ideas why?
They also have problems receiving external emails
sometimes, getting the error message :

Is this related?

SBS 4.5 to SBS 2000 - Keeping Domain Profiles
Hi there, I'm upgrading 4.5 to 2000 using the migration upgrade. I'm going
to perform a migration upgrade and have read the relevant white paper. My
only query is as follows:
I would like to keep the current domain intact as I have an NT4 BDC that
needs to stay on the network as a BDC. I intend to use a spare box approach
to keep the domain by doing the following:
- Install NT4 Server on spare box as BDC
- unplug box from network and connect to new network
- promote to PDC
- upgrade spare box to 2000 Server and set up AD
- plug new box into new network
- install SBS 2000 on new box as a DC
- remove spare box from network
- migrate workstations to new network
My main question is will the user profiles on the workstations be okay? I
have a mixture of NT/2000/XP machines - will any of these have a problem? I
assume that the NT ones will log in fine as they will use the NetBIOS domain
name but what about the 2000 and XP machines - will they connect to the
domain without noticing any difference?
Any comments/suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
Richard. Tag: Internet Gateway Tag: 132937

Windows 2000 SBS to Windows 2003 Server Migration
Hi, please could anyone give me their input. We are migrating from Windows
2000 SBS to Windows 2003 Server and we need to re-install our Active
Directory Controller/DNS Server from scratch with Windows 2003 Server.
We plan on taking the following steps to get move over to Windows
Server 2003:
1. Run adprep on the Small Business Server 2000 GC to prep forest and domain
for Windows Server 2003
2. Install Windows Server 2003 on a new temporary machine and run DCPROMO to
promote the server to an additional controller for the domain
3. Change the GC role and the FSMO roles to point to the new temporary
server
4. Run DCPROMO on the old Small Business Server 2000 to demote it to a
member server
5. Shut down the machine
6. Remove the SBS 2000 Server from AD Sites and Services
7. Format the SBS 2000 Server and install Windows Server 2003 on it
8. Run DCPROMO to promote to an additional controller for the domain
9. Take over the GC and FSMO roles
10. Shut down temporary server
11. Remove the temporary server from AD Sites and Services
I need advice on how to move over the DNS to the temporary server during
this whole process - otherwise after Windows 2003 Server is re-installed on
the main controller, we wont be able to promote it and get back the AD from
the temporary server.
Do you suggest I create a secondary DNS server on the temporary server using
the procedures described in this MS article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;313563&Product=win20
00
Theoretically, that would copy all the dns zones and settings required by
active directory to the new server from the old controller which we want to
re-install.

sbs2000 and mail delivery issue
Hi
i am running sbs 2000 with a dial up connection to the
internet.
Up until recently, my server would dial up and download
mail and on each workstation in microsoft outlook, mail
would be in the inbox. I could see it without having to
hit the send/receive button in ms outlook.
Now, my server will still dial up and download mail but
on each workstation in microsoft outlook, you have to hit
the send/receive button to get mail.
How can i change this back so that mail goes into the
mailbox automatically again without having to hit the
send/receive button in ms outlook?
I do not understand what has changed as i have not
changed anything.
any ideas anyone?

external emails are coming in twice!!
Hi All,
Here's a funny thing. If an email is sent from outside the organisation to
an SBS distribution list then it comes through to everyone as usual. About
15 minutes to an hour later the same message is sent to everyone again this
time in plain text. This does not happen if an email is sent internally to a
distribution list address and emails sent from outside to indiviudal clients
just arrive once only.
I have SBS2000 with 17 clients mainly XP.
Server has two NICs second one connected to the Internet via a Netgear DG814
router.
Emails are sent by SMTP and collected via POP3 from our ISP.
Any ideas anyone?

Problem receiving mail (2 NIC, router, dynamic IP)
I have an SBS client who is having huge problems receiving mail. Many
messages aren't getting through to them. A typical NDR at the sender would
be:
<conversation with mail.company.com [123.123.100.101] timed out while
sending end of data -- message may be sent more than once>
The environment is: SBS 2000 with SP1, ADSL internet connection using 2nd
NIC and router, dynamic IP address and using a dynamic DNS provider to
resolve the server's Exchange address.
We're getting a little desparate - we suspect that hundreds of messages are
getting lost.
Suggestions, please? Tag: Internet Gateway Tag: 132903

No Server Access via Dial-up Modem
One of our clients has a 2x NIC SBS2k setup with a fixed IP on their WAN,
most of the staff use VPN fine and as administrators we use TS to administer
the server, all fine. The box is fully patched. As a backup there is a 56K
modem which we used to use to dial into the server if the 'net was down.
We don't know what we've done (or haven't done) but now the server answers
our dial-up call OK but the negotiation never finishes and the line is
dropped. The event log reports H. 323 Gatekeeper errors of 28 and 47 -
researched these but not much I understand! (Not even sure they're
relevant.)
Any pointers appreciated, TIA.

TS - Run App on Logon not always working
Firstly, sorry for posting a blank page .. too quick with the trigger
finger.
Have a network with a SBS 2000 Server and Windows 2000 (member) TS.
The Environment settings for the User when logging on are set to run the
same application (accounting package). When the close the App the session
closes. No VPN only network logons.
All has been working fine up until a week ago where some users are actually
getting the desktop and the App is not running at Logon. Open another
session and it works fine.
The users that appear to be having the problem are running the RDP Client
and not the TS Client (but not all RDP Clients are experiencing the
problem).
Has anyone encountered something similar ... Technet and Google have proved
fruitless so far.

mcafee groupshield & netshield - update
Hi.
My sbs2000 connects to the net via adsl, using ppp over ethernet protocol.
Since two weeks ago, I was using a modem and raspppoe to connect, but, as
you suggested, we decided to buy a router and remove pppoe -----"for obvious
security reasons"----
ok, installed the router on the second nic, ran ICW, and everything was
re-configured in few minutes and worked fine
but....
but, starting that day, the antivirus solution installed on the server,
mcafee groupshield and netshield, doesn't auto-update anymore.....
I tried configuring the Av to use or not use the proxy server, but the
result didn't change......
From the server I can surf the web, and even go, using explorer, to
ftp.nai.com where the updates are resident......but the av says "can't
connect to update server".....
Can you help me please???
Forgetting: all the clients are able to autoupdate their mcafee
virusscan....
thanks

Report: Lenders miss most ID theft
ID theft has grown so far, so fast, because financial
institutions and other lenders have missed it. A massive
study of 200 million new credit card, checking account

mail
Hi
i am running sbs 2000 with a dial up connection to the
internet.
Up until recently, my server would dial up and download
mail and on each workstation in microsoft outlook, mail
would be in the inbox. I could see it without having to
hit the send/receive button in ms outlook.
Now, my server will still dial up and download mail but on
each workstation in microsoft outlook, you have to hit the
send/receive button to get mail.
How can i change this back so that mail goes into the
mailbox automatically again without having to hit the
send/receive button in ms outlook?
I do not understand what has changed as i have not changed
anything.

out it hurting Exchange. I currently have 2.5 sp3.

Error 1720 - SB Server 2000 SP1 install.
I keep getting an error pop up dialog (Error 1720, unable
to run script) when I attempt to install the SP1 patch for
Small Business Server 2000.
I have already installed Windows 2000 sp4 and Exchange
Server SP3. Any suggestions what I can do to run the SP1?
Thanks....a lot if you can help.....

VPN Ok. Internet Dead.
I have setup and configured a VPN to an offsite server
which works fine. However, when I connect the VPN, I lose
internet access. (Am running SBS2000 here). I saw a post
a while back about a setting to change to allow internet
access while connected to the VPN but I can't find it
again. As I recall, it was very simple (couple of clicks)
but damned if I can remember what it was!
Thanks!
