Hello,

Here is my configuration.

SBS 2000, ISA Server
2 NICs (one external, one internal)...

Here's the problem.
Every so often, the internal NIC will go down (cannot access the computers
on the internal nic, etc). The only way to fix this is to disable and
re-enable the internal nic. (This will happen every couple of hours...
sometimes for a full day... It worked all day yesterday, but then today it
has gone down twice in the past 4 hours)...

Has anyone found a solution to this? Or any ideas on where i can look?

I have tried installing a different NIC... problem still happens with the
2nd (and 3rd) internal NIC.

Thanks to anyone who can help.
...Robin

Hi Marina,

Here's the ipconfig/all

This configuration used to work... we made a network change (added a VPN
box), and disabled the internal nic... The VPN box went down yesterday, so i
had to revert to the original configuration.
This problem happened after we put up the VPN, but i didn't think it was
going to return without the VPN.

Thanks.

The problem is the DHCP servers are conflicting with each other (SBS and
your ISP)

Get a cheap Linksys, DLink, Netgear, etc 1 port cable/dsl router

Assign a private range static IP address to your "external nic" in a
different subnet from internal nic
DNS should be set to the ip of the internal nic

Let the router get the dhcp address from the ISP and it will isolate the
DHCPs and all should be well.

Hi Cris,

I have a VPN unit that i'm waiting to get back from repair, which i know
will solve this problem... I just disable the internal nic, and assign the
external nic the internal ip address (10.0.0.2)... The VPN will then get its
ip address from the ISP.
Pretty much what you are proposing below... and what i had working with the
VPN.

I need to fix this specific problem... until i get the replacement VPN, i'm
stuck with this for now.

How would i fix this DHCP conflict? This problem didn't happen before we
started using the VPN.

Thanks.

Maybe I'm being thick here
Without the VPN appliance are you using one or two nics???
With the appliance are you using 1 or 2 nics??

I gather you are using 2 and one is going directly to the cable/dsl modem
device.
if that ISP device is issuing DHCP, there will be a conflict, if you have to
go to best buy and spend 40.00 for a simple router in the mean time, so be
it.
I'm not familiar of any way to "isolate" SBS from that DHCP server if your
card is set for DHCP

Re: Internal Nic goes down?? by RL

RL

Hi Cris,

Ok... WITH the VPN, i am using just ONE nic... (This is because of the
forementioned problem)
WITHOUT the VPN (no router, etc), i'm using both nics...

Yes... 1 is for the dsl, and the other for the internal nic.

Question is, why for the past 2 years i've never had to buy a router for
this problem (as it never came up before), and now i have to do this? I
thought it had to do with the VPN, but now that i don't have the VPN at this
time, i'm still having this problem.

Maybe what i need to do then is turn off dhcp, and assign the external ip
address (and it is static) to the external nic...

Thanks.

Well your original config does show DHCP turned on so I assumed you did not
have a static IP to assign.

it comes down to if the two DHCP servers see each other...they are gonna
fight.

Re: Internal Nic goes down?? by Robert

Robert

sounds like filter issue. quoted from http://www.ChicagoTech.net

Connectivity issue after enabling VPN in multihomed server

Symptoms: after you enable VPN on a server as a router or with two or more
NICs, you may experience some issues. 1) the internal computers can't access
the Internet; 2) outside VPN clients can't access the VPN server; 3) can't
access the server using TS and VNC form the internal or outside.

Causes: for the security reason, the RRAS modify the routing table and
enable incoming VPN connections only so that no other forward packets over
the interface except PPTP or L2TP traffic.

Hi,

Thanks for pointing that out to me... i had a hard time trying to find that
specific issue on the list (It is listed under VPN as a router, but the text
isn't there. In fact, i found it in VPN routing issues (and it's not listed
in the header either).

FYI, i'm currently NOT using a VPN/Router (hopefully will get that soon)...

Also, is there a resolution to this? I'm still having the problems with the
second nic going down...
Thanks.

Thanks.

Hi,

Can you post the ipconfig/all from the server? Have you checked the
bindingorder and made sure the internal nic is on top? As you are using
RRAS, did you apply the regedits in 292822?

3. I am not using RRAS, although would it be easier to use RRAS? I don't
remember if i set up rras with the original install...
4. No, i didn't apply any of the regedits in 292822 as i'm not using RRAS...

Hi,

You are missing WINS on the internal nic.
DNS on the external nic should ** only ** point to the server IP.
The external nic should have NetBIOS over TCP/IP disabled.

Change it and rerun ICW.
