I have finally implimented the instant messaging option in exchange in a new
SBS installation. I am using the 4.7 messenger on the clients. I am having
serious speed issues with it running. Everything else exchange related is
running fine, adding a new contact in Messenger takes about 1 minute in
which messenger appears to be locked up. When you click on somebody to send
them a message it takes 5-10 seconds before you can type anything to them.

Any ideas on how I can improve the performance of this feature?

The server is running SBS2000 with the corresponding exchange. all the
clients are XP pro.

Thanks.

Sounds like you have the messenger client configured to connect to .net
account and then exchange account. If web access is blocked for this service
(ISA default I think) then it tries for a time to logon to the .net account
then gioves up then tries logging on to exchange account and finally logs on
correctly.

ie goto client --> tools --> options --> accounts tab
make sure it says log in to exchange first
and then uncheck 'my contacts include users of .netmessenger service'

came across this when ISP connection went down at a client site recently.
suddenyl internal IM clients slow. I suggest blocking external users to
begin with anyway. ie lots of unproductive chatting workers and extra
security concerns!

regards
Jeremy

That was my first thought and the first thing I did, have not even gotten
internet to the server yet, working only locally. Could the exchange side be
looking for something on the internet?

Stefan..

Do you have exchange all patched up?
