Server cannot access FTP, clients can
My SBS 2000 server suddenly cannot access ftp sites but
client machines can. I know of no changes to the server
beyond MS Update's patches, etc. Does anyone know of a
firewall (?) or other setting that could block the server
while leaving access available to other computers?

Adding POP3 Account to Exchange Users
We currently have a Small Business Server with 10 User
Accounts. Each user have an internal e-mail
(user@domain.local) and an external POP3
(user@company.com).
I have used the POP3 connector to add the POP3 accounts
so that our SBS server with get the (user@company.com) e-
mail and direct it to the (user@domain.local).
The problem exists with a couple of users who are
sometimes in the office and other times are travelling
away. They need a way to get there POP3
(user@company.com) e-mail to the Outlook 2002 and using
OWA can check any local (user@domain.local) e-mail that
other emloyees might sent them. But the SBS server will
automatically download the e-mails for (user@company.com)
and download it to the Exchange account
(user@domain.local)
Is there a way to keep the e-mails on the ISP server for
a day or two to allow the mobile user to get his e-mail
on his notebook through his Outlook 2002 rather than
using OWA to check his Inbox. Tag: FWD: Install this correction patch from Microsoft Tag: 133083
Limited VPN access
When I VPN in, I can only see 2 users and the server. Why can't I see or
find the other users?
I have tried changing my workgroup to the same as the domain, no help.
I have the server's Internal IP as DNS server in VPN set-up. With or
without, no help.
Home computer behind router, with firewall on or off, no help.

Intel File Transfer and Intel Alert Handler services won't start
Two red flags in the Services window on the Server Status page of the
Administrator Console.
I tried to manually start each service. When trying to start Intel File
Transfer, it says:
Could not start the Intel File Transfer service on local computer. The
service did not return an error. This could be an internal Windows error or
an internal Service error.
Big help! Also got this in the event log: The Intel File Transfer service
terminated with the following error:
The handle is invalid.
When trying to start Intel Alert Handler, it says: The system cannot find
the file specified.
Does anyone know what could be going on? What do these services do? Does
Intel stand for Intelligent, or is it an Intel thing?
The last odd thing was last week in Symantec Service Console, from which I
can manage antivirus things on client workstations. When I tried to view
any workstation's log (this is from the server), I'd get booted out of the
program. The two instances of this I could find in newsgroups or Symantec's
online knowledgebase were followed by a stumped Symantec tech recommending
removing and reinstalling Symantec Service Console, which I did.
We also had what looked like Klez virus emails going around our network last
week, although nothing was caught by our antivirus programs. We just had a
bunch of emails arriving with each other's addresses spoofed in the From
field.
Many thanks in advance!
Cheers,

VPN Problems still..
Here's the setup:
SBS2k, 2 nics, Cisco 801 router. Internal NIC is 10.0.0.2, external is
192.168.1.2, router is 192.168.1.1
I've configured the SBS using the smallbizserver.net instructions. I can
successfully VPN to the SBS from inside the network.
When trying to VPN from a W2KPro sp4 client external to the network, I
receive "error 678: There was no answer". Nothing shows in the server Event
Logs rejecting the connection.
I know the router is up as I can successfully telnet to the router to check
the setup.
I'm stumped. It all worked fine with SBS 4.5 :-((
I'd appreciate any help.. although I can't get to the SBS to check its
settings until tomorrow :-)

SBS installed on existing Domain
As I understand it, you can't install SBS as anything
other than a Root Domain Controller. My question is, what
if anything can be done to resolve the problem if the
product has been installed on either an existing NT4.0 or
Win2k Domain?
For instance, in the case of the Win2k Domain, can I
transfer the Master Roles and Global Catalogue to the SBS
Server to resolve the issue? Or, in the case of the NT4.0
Domain, will an upgrade of the PDC to a Win2k DC, or a
downgrade of the PDC to a BDC, resolve the conflict? Tag: FWD: Install this correction patch from Microsoft Tag: 133068
Installation
I am installing two servers with small business server 2000. One of the servers will be an e-mail server and the other an application/file server. There are 10 persons in my office. Which server do you recommend making the main domain controller. Also, do you think is necessary to install small business on both servers. Could I just use 2000 server on the application server if the e-mail server will be the main controller. Tag: FWD: Install this correction patch from Microsoft Tag: 133066
Upgrading From SBS 4.5 to 2003
We are into our 7th year of (mostly) trouble free operation under 4.5. The
hardware is starting to groan under an expanding corporate load, though, and
we will be buying a new server in the next month or so. Currently we have
about 25 users.
I'd appreciate any thoughts on the following:
1. Would anyone have qualms about jumping into SBS 2003 this soon after
initial release, instead of using the "old" 2000? Unfortunately, waiting
until the first Service Pack isn't an option. :-)
2. We need a tape backup solution sufficient to handle about 140 gigs of
data. Would you go with a huge single tape solution, or a multi-loader of
smaller cartridges? What are the pros and cons of each?
3. We currently use the old SBS version of Trend AV. I understand that this
is no longer available, but will it still run under the new SBS? If not,
what is the best value out there for decent AV protection?
4. Is there a guide anywhere that takes one through the steps of migrating
the old Exchange 5.5 data into Exchange 2003?
Thanks for the info.

File copying/mirroring
I have a remote office with 2kServer (joined to the domain as a domain
controller) connected via a persistant VPN to the main office SBS2k. They
have files that they want to copy/mirror in both offices. They don't want
to access the files from the main server due to slower speed. So they want
them located at the remote office and just have them mirror'd/synchornized
in the main office.
What if anything will help me accomplish this reliably and without much user
intervention. Will DFS work for this?
Any help, suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

SBC DSL Configuration Problem
I have SBS 2000 with SP3 applied. I have a computer with two NIC cards, one
internal the other for the internet.
I have SBC DSL which has a dynamic IP address and uses PPOE. Trying to
configure without the use of a router.
First is there a "how to" document for typical configuration? If not I have
a few questions.
1. How do I supply the name and password for the PPOE authentication?
2. With a dynamic IP address, their gateway unknown, their DNS unknown, how
do I set up the NIC?

remote desktop connection
Hi! Since I changed my member server (win2k server) to application mode, I
can't connect to the SBS box via "Remote Desktop Connection". I get the
error window called "Remote Desktop Disconnected" with the following in the
window:
The client could not establish a connection to the remote computer.
The most likely causes for this error are:
1) Remote connections might not be enabled at the remote computer. (most
probable cause)
2) The maximum numbwer of connections was exceeded at the remote computer
(not likely).
3) A network error occured while establishing the connection. (not likely,
I can kinda vpn in).
Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I didn't think changing the member
server would affect my admin connects. But, now that all this dawned on me
I realize that TS is running on both servers, and that is probably not
correct either. I want them to run on the member server, but I need to
connect from an admin perspective to the sbs box.

Exchange distribution problem + OWA access lost - PLEASE PLEASE HELP
Hi,
Please believe i do do my own research all the time but i really am
stuck and am getting depressed!!!
In a nut shell, We have and 1 SBS 2000 server using exchange and ISA
+ ADSL with static IP, this basically connects up to and ISP's POP box
(I know it's not the right way)and downloads the mail.
Now this setup has worked pretty well for the last few years but on
friday it went a bit wrong, we were trying to work out why a specific
SSL site would not work over our proxy thus were trying new rules and
playing with the SSL listeners etc. After all this it became evident
there was a small compat. issue between the site and ISA.
Anyhow we put everything back the way it was........and guess what is
don't work. Now exchange does send out all SMTP with no probs and the
POP connector brings down the mail also however we have no idea in
hell where they now go, have checked all the que etc. + the POP
inforward folders + all relevant services.
On top of that I can no longer access OWA even from the server - just
keep getting 403 forbidden. Now i cant help thinking that it must be
a rule or policy however i've set ISA to allow all traffic on all
ports (or so i think i have) but still nothing.
Please help I REALLY AM ON THE EDGE!!!
All the best

Linksys router
This may be horribly off topic for this newsgroup, but I can't find any
more likely place to ask.
I've got a p-to-p LAN in my home (2 machines) that are connected through
a Linksys BEFW11S4 broadband router operating in Gateway mode. One
machine is cabled, the other is connected via wireless adapter. The
machines are on static IP's, and I have experimented with turning the
router DHCP enabled and disabled.
Lately, it seems I'm having to reset the router at a random time
everyday whether DHCP is enabled or not. I have to reset it because it
stops carrying the network -- ping <gateway address> results in "host
not found", and neither machine can access the Internet or ping the DSL
modem.
Anybody know anything about this? I've upgraded firmware and tinkered,
but I'm just not tinkering with the right thing.
Thanks

Setting up OWA
I'm new to Exchange and need to be able to configure Outlook Web Access on a
SBS 2000 system as soon as possible.
The domain is configured presently at domainname.local.
I have read through the documentation and know that to change that to the
public domain I need to go through the Internet wizard in the To do list.
And that will be done when the server is rolled out.
What I don't know how to do is to set up OWA. Exchange is up and working.
ISA is installed. But how do I configure the OWA component.
I've checked and the Pop3 Mail Connector is installed.
Are there are any knowledge base articles that step someone through
installing and configuring the OWA?

backing up exchange

1. go to a command prompt
2. type "copy con c:\exback.bat ntbackup backup ds

3. press ctrl z
4. at 00:00 /every:m,t,w,th,f c:\exback.bat (enter)
How do i change this to backup to a file on the server?
I want it to backup to a file because i have not got a
backup solution in place other than to backup to a file
and then burn the file to CD. We are looking at this
issue.
How do i change this to include hardware compression on?
Why would i need hardware compression turned on?
Does this stop the services for exchange so the files do
not appear locked?
How do i change the time if i want it to occur at 9pm
each night? Is it 09:00 instead of 00:00? If i want it
to backup at 2pm is it 14:00?

SBS re-install questions...

although we do full tape backups every night. So
therefore, I am to order a new Dell PowerEdge, install a

I have read the Migration documents on the MS Site, but I
have some questions:
1. Can we have Exchange2000 on a separate box?
2. What are the steps for the migration..is there an
updated copy somewhere? I believe the document on the MS
site is quite old

appreciated.

Network Connectivity
SBS2000 w/ 2 nic, Client Win2000
Have 2 issues, not sure if they are related.
Just installed a Sharp AR-M280 network printer that has static IP of
192.168.16.250 that is constantly dropping off LAN. Try to ping and it
times out.
Have adjusted and turned off power saving features but it still looses
connection with LAN.
Once you turn it off and back on then it is recognized on the LAN (can be
pinged from server or
workstations).
Also, when I leave Outlook Express 6 running for an extended length of time
(while watching this newsgroup) it is getting an error message "The TCP/IP
connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server." Once I close and
open OE it is fine (for a while).

Cisco VPN and SBS 2000
I hope I can find an answer for this. I am trying to get a connection

Internal IP range is 10.0.0.x. The server is 10.0.0.1 and the clients

The other network card is plugged into the Cisco router. The IP
addresses are 192.168.1.1 for the router, and 192.168.1.2 for the
internal NIC.
The other end of the Cisco router VPN is at a home office. The router
there is 192.168.2.1 and the computer it is connected to is
192.168.2.2.
The ISP that manages the routers assure me that the VPN is working
fine. I can PING both ends of the VPN, but I cannot browse.
If I type \\192.168.1.2\share, I get an error message saying that it

SBS 4.5 to SBS 2000 - Keeping Domain Profiles
Hi there, I'm upgrading 4.5 to 2000 using the migration upgrade. I'm going
to perform a migration upgrade and have read the relevant white paper. My
only query is as follows:
I would like to keep the current domain intact as I have an NT4 BDC that
needs to stay on the network as a BDC. I intend to use a spare box approach
to keep the domain by doing the following:
- Install NT4 Server on spare box as BDC
- unplug box from network and connect to new network
- promote to PDC
- upgrade spare box to 2000 Server and set up AD
- plug new box into new network
- install SBS 2000 on new box as a DC
- remove spare box from network
- migrate workstations to new network
My main question is will the user profiles on the workstations be okay? I
have a mixture of NT/2000/XP machines - will any of these have a problem? I
assume that the NT ones will log in fine as they will use the NetBIOS domain
name but what about the 2000 and XP machines - will they connect to the
domain without noticing any difference?
Any comments/suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
Richard. Tag: FWD: Install this correction patch from Microsoft Tag: 132937
