Problem Setting up XP Laptop On SBS 2000 Network
I am having problems setting up an XP Laptop on my SBS 2000 Network. I
utilize a network setup disc to set up new computers. When I try to set
this pc up I get a "domain not found" or "can't set this type of computer
up". I don't have the error down word for word. Bottom line the setup
bails out. The same disc worked on some 98 and 2000 machines. I was also
able to release and renew the ip and get a new address within the DHCP
address pool. I am using the "problem XP laptop" at home on my cable modem
to write this, so I feel that it does have any hardware problems. Any
advice or suggestions will be very appreciated.
Thanks,

NEWBIE: VPN problems - no response from server?
Hi All,
I am having problems setting up VPN.
I have configured my SBS2000 server according to Mariette Knaps 'How do I
configure the server for remote access with VPN' on smallbizserver.net.
The server uses a Netgear DG834 ADSL router and this is set up to allow VPN
PPTP on port 1723 both in and out.
I have set up my remote XP client at home according to KB 314076 (Configure
a connection to a VPN in Windows XP) with PPTP as the type of VPN.
When I try to connect from my home PC (with both the XP firewall and my
zone alarm disabled). I get a 'connecting to the IP address' then a
'verifying username and password'. After that it times out and I just get a
Windows error 721 'the remote computer did not respond'
If I check the 'IP packet filters' in ISA there is no port listed for PPTP
(although there is one listed 1701 for LTP2).
I am using Windows XP home do I need to upgrade to Pro.?
Thanks guys for any help.

moving on question
Hi! Well, it was approved. The budget that is. So, I'm moving on to
SBS2003 Premium for the SBS box
(new box) and to Win2003 Ent. Ed. for Member server.
Question: What is the best way to approach this?
The existing sbs box (sbs2k) will be used as a desktop handling backup
images via Ghost. I was planning on installing Win xp Pro on it.
Challenges:
1) A new install, but getting all AD and exchange mboxes over on sbs box.
2) I'm not too worried about the member server--it just serves as a file
server (via mapped drives) and a print server. I'm guessing the best bet is
to just copy directories to the existing sbs2k box then do a complete
reinstall here.
Goals, in summary:
1. Replace existing PDC with new SBS2003 Premium.
2) move all AD and exchange stuff from old sbs to new sbs.
3) Load win2003 ent edit. on existing member server, using a clean install,
then copying data back.
Any one have any advise? Thanks.

Serious Problems with ISA
Hello,
SBS2K. I posted an article in this group entitled "More
Problems With Dial-Up Connection" on January 13th. In
Wallace Fu's response dated January 16th, he advised that
I change the 'BackOffice Internet Access Site and Content
Rule' and the 'BackOffice Internet Access Protocol Rule'
to allow all traffic as oppoesd to the the BackOffice
Internet Users Group for some troubleshooting. I did
that. But now, I have realized that those changes are not
necessary to troubleshoot the problem, so I tried to
change them back.
Now, I cannot hit my newsgroups using Outlook Express
(three different group accounts) on my office PC (not via
dial-up). Also, my Firewall Client, which I have set to
hide when disabled keeps coming back up on the taskbar. I
refresh, then it goes away for a few minutes, but then it
comes back. This does not happen normally. I can still
surf the web though. I dont know whats wrong, but I
assume its something in ISA.
This stuff always happens on Friday afternoon. Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks,

OT: V2i Protector [a story from the field]
Hi Everybodies,
Yesterday a client called me to let me know that his DLT drive had died.
Dell came out to change the drive, but afterwards they started to get errors
in the event log. Dell advised them to get the new Veritas drives and to
install them. They installed the new drivers, but wouldn't reboot until
everyone had gone home.
They rebooted the server and got a BSOD saying that one of the registry
hives had been corrupted from the install of the new drivers. Booting into
safe mode failed, as along with last known good configuration.
They take an image of their server before they do any work on it, just like
this and also before the installation of patches and the like. Placed in
V2i recovery disk, restored image and the server was back up.
Total down time 25 minutes.
Client rang to tell me this story and advised that it has just paid for
itself.

tape backup recommendations

What's this running?
7pm last night, all workstations are turned off, but the
Internet connection is active. So I ask myself, "What's
the server doing?" Live updates run in the AM. So I look
in task manager and see these jobs
savfmsesp.exe (4 seperate jobs)
savfmsespjm.exe
savfmset.exe
savfmselog.exe
What the heck are these things? Maybe this is what was
accessing the Internet??? Tag: Win2000 Icon Tag: 149538

Event Viewer
After some research on google, its becoming apparent that one of the
hotfixes (don't know which one) corrupts the event viewer. The "FIX" for
this is to stop the event log, rename the old files and reboot the machine.
I have not done this yet, but has anybody else noticed a problem? I can read
all logs other htan the Applications log. Once I try to read that, all other
logs become unreadable until I restart event viewer.
The real question in all this is how do I stop the Event Log? I've gone to
services, but the start/stop/pause options are all greyed out.
Not to sidetrack too far on a rant, but this is exactly why I hate patching.
The patches break more than they fix half the time. Nothing strikes me
funnier than applying a patch, running windows update after the patch, and
having a new list of patches to apply to fix the last patch.....
Anyhow, I know it has to be done, so now I'm trying to be a good soldier and
get this on its feet again.

Displaying more than 25 messages in OWA
Is there a way to set OWA up to veiw more than 25
messages at once? Right now if you have 50 messages in
your inbox there are 2 pages with 25 messages on each
one. It would be nice to have all 50 on one page so that
if you have a bunch of SPAM mail you can highlight more
at a time.
Thanks for any information.

Credentials Supplied Conflict - New Domain - New User
Hey all,
I am just finishing a new server roll out. I'm running Windows 2000 Server with SQL Server, DNS server, Active Directory, and Exchange Server installed on it. This machine is the Domain Controller of the domain GMS.com. Everything seems ok(says DCDIAG), SQL Server is fine, DNS is operating correctly(says NETDIAG), AD is fine, and Exchange installed with a minimal fuss(FORESTPREP and DOMAINPREP where first run). But when I try to add the first user to the domain(a test system) from the users PC, I get an error saying, "The credentials supplied conflict with an existing set of credentials." I have tried removing the user and computer from AD, then trying to add that PC to the domain, and nothing. I found a fix in the Microsoft knowledge base(197987) saying I need to modify the registry entry for HKEY_USERS, but when I follow the instructions to load the NTUSER.dat file for the user in conflict, the user is not in \Documents And Settings. If I try to load NTUSER.dat from a user that is there, it errors out saying "Unable to complete". If I try to simply delete the node on the tree, it says I donâ??t have access permission, but I am logged on as the built-in administrator with full system access; How can this be? Well I know this isn't a big deal, but I canâ??t find anything on the knowledge base except article 197987, and I want to get this domain rolled out. Thanks in advance to everyone, and hope to hear from you guys with good answers as always. Thanks again,

Issue with Backup Exec on SBS2000
We are running SBS2000, never had a problem. Installed Veritas 8.6, no
problem. We have been running successful backups for months now. Now all
of a sudden nothing runs on it. In the scheduler I see our daily backup
showing that it is scheduled to run, but it never does. It doesn't make any
kind of error log or anything. If I try to do a manual backup, same
problem, shows that it is scheduled but nothing happens. All of the
services startup fine, tried restarting them, then it shows that the backup
jobs were "missed". Any ideas?

Control Panel issue?
Hi
I posted this in the win2000.general but got no takers I though I'd see if
anyone here had seen this before.
I have a win2k sp4 that the user can't open the Control Panel, My Computer,
Printers or indows Explore unless there part of the administrator group. If
I put
them in the power user group I get something like what's described in KB
221153. It seems that this is a little different problem since changing the
permission level fixes the problem I reset the permission on the winnt
folder with no effect. this is a real puzzle to me I would like to fix this
with out re-installing the OS (this is a clean install 48 hrs old) as it
takes about 4-1/2 hrs to re-format and install all the software.
Thanks

Two quick question on DNS, VPN and Firewall
I have computers which have multiple entries in the
servers DNS. (One is now running very slow).
e.g.
PCcomp7 has a DNS entry IP of 192.168.0.33
PCcomp7 also has a DNS entry ip of 192.168.0.80
This has only happened since installing and configuring a
VPN.
Question1: Can i safely delete 192.168.0.33 as the pc
always seems to be assigned 192.168.0.80 anyway?
What would the implications be?
A user cannot get mail when his firewall is set to enabled
does he need to have the FW Client running? I note a lot
of other postings state disable the firewall and run
without it.
Question2: What are the implications if i do disable? Tag: Win2000 Icon Tag: 149501
Outlook 2003 with Office XP under SBS 2003
Hi All,
I just received my SBS 2003 Premium disks via software assurance. It
comes with Outlook 2003! GROOVY! Unfortunately, I don't have
software assurance for Office XP. Is this going to be a problem if I
want to use the new Outlook 2003 alongside the XP versions of Word,
Excel, Powerpoint, and Access? And how with this mix of office
versions blend with SBS 2003 Premium? Will I be missing a ton of
features, create program instability/crashes, and basically create
havoc on my existing client server setup?
Anyone know the answers to the exciting, though provoking questions???

OWA attachment issue
I have a member of staff who gains access to his Mail remotely from our
SBS2K server.
He has a Windows 98 2nd Edition with Office 97 and IE version 6.
He is able to use all the functions in OWA except adding attachment.
When he goes to add the attachment, I.e. and excel document, after browsing
for it, He clicks on attach and nothing happens. It keeps the location in
the file in the dialogue box but yet will not attach the file to the
message.
Has anyone come across this issue before? If so any help would be much
appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

External Website not starting: SBS2003
Hi all, i have recently upgraded to small business server 2003 premium from SBS2000. I am having trouble getting an exteranl web site to start in IIS6. When trying to nstart this site on the external interface, i get the error message "The network location cannot be reached. For more information about netwrok troubleshooting, see Windows Help."
Sites on the internal facing interface work fine. Something i do not understand is the default web site is only assigned to the internal interface but you can still access it from the web. for example http://sbs.domain.co.uk/remote
The system event log error message is copied below:

Switch NIC 1 to be NIC 2
Current SBS with a single 10/100 NIC. Internet access via 56K dial-up
modem. We are FINALLY getting a cable connection run ito our building.
I am going to add a new 10/100/1000 NIC and want it to be for internal
(TServer and hub are both 10/100/1000) and change the current NIC to
be for outside. Is there anything that I should be aware of that could
give me troubles?

Group Policy - Audit Object Access - Not working - Help
Have reviewed several MS articles (KB301640, KB300549, KB315416) but cannot
get the Policy to work.
The Effective Setting remains as "No Auditing".
Basically want to audit who reads, chnages, deletes files on the Server
shared folders (specific folders only).
If someone has any other ideas it would be great.
Thanks
