Hi,
I have noticed that Iomega have a 35GB/90GB USB drive. Has anyone used this
drive for backing up and does it work OK with Windows Backup Program.

Eliot (a fellow SBS MVP) has tested them with SBS2k3 and they work with a
small caveat (don't know about SBS2k, but I would say it is highly probable
that they work too).

Check Susan's blog...

they work but DLT will be more secure, more reliable and cheaper than
REV.....unless of course you only use 1 tape. But any good tape rotation
you will spend a LOT more than DLT.

Hi Mark,
The following is a response from Iomega -

"I regret to inform you that neither Microsoft SBS2000 NTBackup nor NTBackup
work with Iomega REV drive. Iomega recommends to use the backup software
which is supplied with Iomega REV drive."

If this is the case, then will I have problems backing up Exchange.
Also, since they state that NTBackup doesn't work, then the backup needs to
be automated with a batch file. Can this be done.

Check the blog... it works.

While Iomega won't go on record as supporting them, SBS MVPer Eliot has
tested them and they will work.....

More information on the REV drives can be found here.

Eliot writes.....

The Backup Wizard won't write to REV drives b/c IOmega set
them to look like CDs, and the Wizard looks at whatever that attribute
is. NT Backup looks at the drive just fine, though. Since the Wiz
actually configures NT Backup, the best workaround to allow
you to use the Rev with the Wizard is:

Use the wizard to configure the backup to a hard drive, then open up
regedit to:

HKLM\software\microsoft\smallbusinessserver\backup and change the key
"Backup Location Path" to the Rev Drive.

again....it is less secure, and reliable than DLT and look at the cost for a
dozen tapes compared to Rev.

The Iomega drive, by default, is configured to act like a CDROM drive, which
is why it won't work with NTBackup out of the box. However, a simple regedit
does fix this problem.

Those instructions where for SBS2k3 (and more specifically for the backup
wizard, which doesn't even exist on 2k). Eliot tested it only with SBS2k3,
not 2k.

I don't have a Rev drive, but try not to use the included backup
program... simply use the NTBackup (which is Exchange aware) since I doubt
that the Iomega one is. I think you should be able to backup to the drive as
long as Windows recognizes it as removable media, hard disk, etc.
