Group policy in SBS
We are currently running SBS2000 with around 30 Windows
2000 Pro clients.
As a security measure I have taken them out of the Local
Administrator group on their machines, so that they cannot
install/uninstall programs or change the time etc...
I think that it is now time for a Group Policy, where I
want to totally disable their machines in view of them
inserting CDs, Floppies or installing/uninstalling
software on the clients.
Can someone give me pointers on how to do this please.
Furthermore, if I want to install or read a CD from a
client, then I assume that I need to login as Domain
Administrator from the client, to override the Group
Policy??
Please help me.

XP Connections to NT Server Slow
Have just moved from SBS 4.5 with additional NT4 BDC to SBS 2000. We have
kept the NT4 server intact and the AD was made up from the original domain
using a spare box upgrade type migration. The NT4 box has integrated back
into the domain perfectly and is syncronising its database okay with the SBS
2000.
Client logins are working fine, with a mix of NT/2000/XP all authenticating
with the SBB server perfectly and the clients can also access shares on the
NT4 server okay proving that logging onto the 2000 DC is also allowing them
access to the NT4 server.
The problem I am having is that some XP users are having problems with the
shares on the NT4 server. Although they are seeing them and having no
problems 90% of the time, sometimes the connection becomes really slow and
it can take 5 minutes or more to open a small word document.
Anyone have any similar experiences or ideas of what could cause this?
Thanks,
Ric. Tag: Help: Customer wants a special mail solution Tag: 134630

But we don't want them to have any access to our server.

OT: Migrate NT4.0 to W2K
Hi,
Not related to SBS, but maybe someone has done this before.
I would like to upgrade a NT4.0 domain to a W2K AD domain, but the current
PDC is vital to the network.
Is it possible to add a BDC, promote this to a PDC, remove the original PDC
and upgrade the promoted PDC to W2K?
So if the upgrade fails, I can put the original PDC back in the network.
Best regards,
Dennis. Tag: Help: Customer wants a special mail solution Tag: 134625
POP3 & SBS Exchange
I've tried setting up the POP3 connector but continually
get Application Errors on the event viewer "Failed to
check POP3 account for username at host xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx on
port 110. The error was 10065"
Looking at support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;242210 it says check the FQDN, but I have this set ok.
This was the only support article I could find.
Not sure where to go now.
Regards and thanks

High CPU Usage 90%+
After having rebuilt our server any previous problems have now been solved
however with nothing running on the server the CPU usage is very high 90%+.
The usage graph goes from 0% to 100% and back to 0% constantly over and
over.
This is with no users accessing the server...
Task manager does not show any other processes using a signiciant amount of
CPU other the "System idle processes"
It's a basic BSB2000 server running Echange, SQL Server and ISA
What is the best way to diagnose this ?
Thanks

Can't send out email
All email accounts can receive email and can send and receive interoffice
mail, but we can not send messages out. We are using the SMTP connector for
accounts to receive mail from the ISP. All users are getting the message:
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server.
Please contact you system administrator.
<xxx.xxx.local #5.5.0 smtp;550 .net 003; you are not allowed to send e-mail
to xxxx@yyyy.com>.
Any help greatly appreciated.

CPU usage 100%
My server has CPU usage pegged at 100%. I checked the
task manager and I can see the physical memory tic down
like a timer. Meanwhile, the event viewer, Applications
tab is full of repetitive errors with a source
of "Perflib". Anyone have any ideas as to what can I do?
Right now my box is so slow it is not functional.

Pushing out Office XP SP's
Hi! What is the easiest way to push out Office XP SP's to workstations?
HFChkNet doesn't do office, correct?
Neither does SUS?
Is it recommended to install SUS on the PDC or a member server?

Mandatory profile path for multi users
I know when I use roaming profiles, I need to set up an individuals unique

Outlook Web Access
Hello all,
I have an SBS 2000 server that remote clients log onto
via a VPN. There is one login and password that all of
them use. I have implemented a policy that only allows
them to go to one domain, and I have allowed them access
to Outlook Web Access.
Internet access works great, but there are problems when
they try to log onto OWA - it keeps prompting them for a
username and password while the mailbox loads in the
background. I know it has something to do with ISA
because if I tell Internet Explorer not to use the proxy,
it loads fine.
So, I tried creating an Internet Explorer shortcut that
points to the server internally (i.e.
http://myserver/exchange) and that works. However, it
does not prompt for a username and password to
differentiate between the users' mailboxes - it uses the
username and password that they all log on with.
I also tried changing the directory security in IIS for
the Exchange directory with unsuccessful results - even
if a prompt is given, it does not attach to the
username's inbox.
Could any of you give me an idea how we can access OWA on
the INTERNAL network and have it prompt us for a username
and password to log into individual mailboxes?
TIA !!!

How Much RAM
How much RAM can SBS 2000 support?
I remember seeing something about a 2 GB limit.
Is there any point in exceeding 2GB of RAM. If I got 3GB
of RAM would it be wasted.

NO email
Hi:
We have an existing SBS2000 Server which hosted our email.
We added a Win2000 Server. We cannot send or recieve email
with exchange. I was told that SBS and Win2K cannot co-
exist. Is this true? Any suggestions on how to fix.
Thanks in advance,

Joining SBS 2003 Domain
I set up SBS 2003 RC in a VMWare virtual machine to get
familiar with the administration of SBS 2003.
The install went perfectly (except it complained because
the VM had only one "network card"). All the services
appear to be working, Exchange is sending and receiving
mail from my ISP OK, the IE browser communicates with
the "world". All apears well.
Now here's the rub. I set up a second VMWare VM and
installed XP Pro on it and attempted to join the SBS
domain. The XP Pro machine communicates via IE with the
SBS's web pages (as well as the "world"). When I run the
Join the Domain from the Web page it tells me that it
can't find my usernames (I tried administrator, my Admin
account, and a couple of other admin"test" accounts"). I
even tried to join a real PC from the Network to it and
got the same results.
The SBS "pings" both by IP and host name and I can get to
the Web pages in SBS with no problem.
As far as hardware goes, it's installed on a Dell server
w/ 1 gig of memory, a 2 gig processor, 140 hard drive.
The VM machine has 512 meg of memory. Now the Dell
server communicates over a wireless lan (Linksys G 2.4
ghz) with the hard wired network (but that shouldn't
bother the two VM machines I set up)
Anybody got any suggestions? I'm stuck..

Article 283268
Hi! This article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283628 gives a little
note at the bottom
"Note: You will not be able to use a PPTP connection by using either the
Winsock Proxy Client, or the ISA Firewall Client. Clients will require a
Gateway address to provide a network route through the ISA server for PPTP
connections to be made successfully. "
How do I configure a gateway address? My laptop does use the ISA firewall
client.

ISA server could not be detected?
This is the message I get after the SBS client has been
connected a few minutes. When the client first logs in,
the message is: "Configured to use ISA Server servername".
I am talking about the firewall client icon on the systray
(when you fly over with the mouse). Ie works fine, but is
a little slow, and if I right-click on the icon, and
select configure, I can select update and the message
changes to "Configured to use ISA Server servername"
again. But, in a few minutes, it changes to "ISA server
could not be detected".
Any ideas? Is this normal?
Thanks in advance. Tag: Help: Customer wants a special mail solution Tag: 134524
