To Do List missing items...
Greetings,
We just installed SBS2K and the "BackOffice To Do List" is missing the
following important items:
Add client licenses
Define client applications
Add user
Add printer
Enable network interfaces
Configure access for Terminal Services
The list does however contain these items:
Welcome
Configure Internet Information Services
Internet Connection Wizard
Configure remote access
Configure modems
Configure Exchange management
Configure server status report
Getting started
Any ideas on how to correct this other than a full reinstall???
Thanks in advance,

AD User creation
In SBS2000, can a group be configured that can create users, but not
administrators? I'd like pseudo-admins to be able to create domains users
and mail boxes. They would accomplish this via the My Console web page.

Outgoing mail Disappering
Hi All:
We just installed a brand new SBS 2003. I think Microsoft had done a
wonderful job.
I however do have a problem. Any mail we send outside is disappearing. We do
not get any Non Delivery Notice. I have tried sending to all accounts at
hotmail but to no avail. Mail simply diappears.
I did only one thing different . I configured the address of internal NIC
from 192.168.16.2 to 10.0.0.1 via network connections. As soon as I relized
that I should have used a wizard; I went back and re-did with wizard. Please
help
Thank you

SBS 2000 / Exchange 2000 / Win 98 / Messenger
Here at PMI we did not sign-op for Software Assurance and
are therefore not eligiable for LCS, which I don't believe
is applicable in our case anyway because we have an SBS
2000 network running a full suite of components which
includes Exchange 2000. I understand IM was dropped in
Exchange 2003, however Exchange 2000 does facilitate IM.
Our SBS 2000 installation is a small development network
with access limited to a small group of engineers. We have
historically been able to communicate with both internal
and external IM clients. Windows Messenger version 2.2
which originally came with our installation is no longer
compatible with MSN Messenger blocking access to external
IM clients. Windows Messenger 5.0 was downloaded and
works well with our XP and Win2000 clients, but does not
run on Win 98 machines. The casual communications pathway
facilitated by IM improves design collaboration along with
providing cost savings for our development efforts. We
purchased our server from Dell Computer and I installed
it. We are looking for a messenger which will work with
internal and external IM clients running on Win 98
machines within an SBS 2000 network. These Win 98 clients
exist within our network to provide backward compatibility
for expensive systems emulation and design software which
has difficulty running on XP and Win 2000 machines. I'll
purchase the messenger if the price is right. Any help
would be greatly appreciated. Tag: Heads up, virus with a dictionary.. Tag: 155565

SBS2000 Client IE Problem
I have a client with SBS2000, he is not using ISA and we have not installed
firewall clients on workstations, but every client that is connected to the
domain, the browser proxy settings are configured to point to the ISA

to continue configuring the browser manually. I have posted this question
several times but people tell me to uninstall the firewall client, it is not
installed.

SBS 2003 POP3 connector crash
Hi, my pop3 connector crashes when I try to edit the
routing rules for the mail boxes. When I edit the rules
and click "ok" to continue the complete management

I get and event ID 1000 in the application log with the
error message of "Faulting application mmc.exe Version

I have rebooted the server, replaced the .dll file opened

Anyone come across this and have an answer? Is it
possible to uninstall the pop3 connector and reinstall it

Routing & Remote Access device
Hi
I have a SBS 2003 server that I am using in a home office environment. I
have installed 2 modems for use with the shared fax service. One for
incoming faxes, and one for outgoing faxes. The problem that I have is that
during installation of SBS 2003 Routing & Remote Access Service has also
configured itself to use both modems as R & R devices. So the modem which is
used for outgoing faxes only and is set to not answer incoming calls still
answers on that line. That is a problem because that line is also a voice
line. Can anyone tell me how to disable that modem from the Routing & Remote
Access Device List, and leave the other available for Remote Access dial-in?

There's no change to their password etc - i can use

question about reverse dns entry and forward lookup on HELO name
Hello,
We are having an email bounce on an SBS2000 box. The recipient is
stating that we do not have a reverse dns entry and our forward lookup
HELO name is incorrect.
After performing a reverse DNS lookup through a utilities website, I
found that the entry is from the old email domain. Is this something I
change on the server or do I handle this through the domain registrar?
Also, the HELO name is our local domain such as "domain.sbs" instead
of our public domain. Is there any way to change this, or is there a
reason to? What is the function of HELO?
As always, thanks for your help!

SBS 2000 / SBS 2003
Hi all
We currenlty run a small network with SBS 2000 with 10

I have posted questions on multiple forums with no
success, some say that I need MIS, some say that MIS does
not work with SBS2000, some say I need to buy a SSL

What do I need to get this PDA to work, and allow it to

SMTP and Satellite ADSL
Hi
I want to handle my own mail by smtp and use SBS2003 (2
NICs)
I have a Satellite ADSL account. The IP apparently does
not have reverse DNS lookup. Have asked ISP for info on
this but so far no joy, they have given me their smtp
server to use but I want to try to handle all myself if
possible.
Satellite Modem Gilat 360E has IP 217.xxx.xxx.201 this
goes into a Linksys Router BEFSR41 (192.168.0.1) set to
obtain an IP automatically from the Sat Modem and then
into my External NIC Static IP (192.168.0.2).
When I use www.whatismyip.com I get 217.xxx.xxx.202.
I have a domain name mycompany.co.uk with the following
records setup:
www A 212.xxx.xxx.196
mail A 217.xxx.xxx.202 (not sure if I have the
correct entry here?)
ftp A 212.xxx.xxx.196
* A 212.xxx.xxx.196
MX Records:
mail.mycompany.co.uk. 5
mx0.host.co.uk. 10
Appreciate some advice on what needs doing to set this up
correctly.
Many thanks in advance

XP access
To anyone who may be able to help!!!!!
I am running SBS 2K with several clients (laptops) running
win2k and winxp.
One of the admin XP laptops failed and the hard drive was
put into another XP laptop of the same everything. The
replacement laptop has had something sticky spilled on it
and the keys are not that responsive. Although they do
work.
We now have a new laptop and wanted to migrate over
(larger hard drive) all user files... e.g. pst file, user
profile etc., the My Documents folder is redirected to the
server.
The old sticky key laptop was disjoined from the domain
and we are not able to access the local accounts. When
all of the machines were new they were all brought on line
with the same local admin password. Now however, the
local admin password is not working and we can't access
the hard drive to copy any files over to the new machine.
Is there any way to access the local account or rejoin the
domain without local access to the computer?
No, there is not a backup, no, there is not a rescue disk,
no, there is not a password reset disk, yes, we are
idiots... I am screwed huh???

OWA...yes, AGAIN....
OK folks, here's the deal:
Last week I couldn't figure out why on earth OWA stopped working. I FINALLY
nailed it down to the default web site had lost its "use ssl" check box
setting. I re-checked the boxes (including the one for 128 bit encryption),
hit apply, restarted ISA server management and whalla it was back up and
working.
Today a user comes to me and says "hey, OWA is down again" So I go check and
sure enough its down. Tried to stop and restart (as that normally kicks it
back up) and still no dice. I go back into the Directory security and AGAIN
the checkboxes are unchecked. WT(insert favorite explitive here)? Why does
this keep losing its setting? So I reclick the 2 boxes again and hit apply.
THIS time, up pops a box about how I should chose what other directories
this applies to as they currently all inherit properties. I've never seen
this before, so I do the right thing and panic. I hit cancel to go back and
verify that I'm doing the right thing. When I go back into the directory
security tab, use SSL and 128 Bit Encryption ARE CHECKED even though I hit
cancel. Oh geez....So I decide to uncheck the boxes, hit apply and start
over. When I hit apply, the same box pops up asking what directories this
should apply to. I hit select all and hit apply. (I was trying to put it
back how I found it) I go back in one last time and check off the 2 boxes
and hit apply. This time, no pop up. Hmmm.....I take them off, No pop up. I
put them back on and still no pop up. At this point I restart teh ISA server
management service and whalla, OWA is back up.
BUT......(there's always a but......)
OWA asks for authentication at every single step. Just to get in I have to
re-enter my authentication over a dozen times. Any click I make requires
re-authentication, including logging out.
What on earth did I break? Where do I look to start fixing it?
Thanks. Tag: Heads up, virus with a dictionary.. Tag: 155459

Exchange 2000 - Outbound SMTP Routing
Hi there,
We're running SBS2000 with Exchange 2000 and I was wondering if anybody
could clarify the following:
We currently forward all our outgoing mail through our ISPs mailhost but we
are finding this problematic as we sometimes have a very high volume of
e-mails going out. This results in a large queue forming because we only
get short bursts when sending through the ISP.
We need really need to come up with an alternative method - preferably using
DNS to send the emails directly. Can anyone advise as to how easy this is
to set up. I know how to configure the server I just need some advice on
how the DNS records for our domain needs to be configured as I know some
mailservers perform reverse DNS lookups when receiving mail.
Any advice/alternatives appreciated.

When I view the sessions in the administrator console this machine has no

as "anonymous" when connecting to the internet. It does browse the
internet.I suspect the ISA firewall is blocking the email. How can I

Can Not View Externaly Hosted Website
I have a very simple setup with a single Small Busines Server 2000
running Exahange, SQL, ISA and DNS with a few clients. 2 Nic, one for
ADSL and one for the network.
This has been going on a while after I reinstalled exchange some time
ago.
Our domain is the same as our website name.
I have tried adding a www A record pointing to the website address and
restarting DNS server as suggested in several posts I have read,
however this has not remedied the situation.
We can see all other pages on the internet normaly except our own
site.
When we try to load www.mydomain.co.uk we are confronted with a box
saying:
Enter Network Password.
Firewall: [ISA Server Name] and asking for the admin username and
password. Entering the administrator username and password still does
not load this page.
After cancleing these boxes we are left with:
HTTP 407 Proxy Authentication Required - The ISA Server requires
authorization to fulfill the request. Access to the Web Proxy service
is denied. (12209)
When we ping www.mysite.co.uk it finds the correct IP address but the
request times out:
I do not know if this is a DNS issue, ISA or what but it is very
frustrating. If anyone can offer any help I would realy appreciate
it.

Mobile Users With Roaming User Profiles
Hello,
SBS2K, WinXp Pro clients.
I have users that have a workstation in the office and a laptop for when
they are on the road. I have set up roaming user profiles that point to a
profiles folder I created on the SBS. I also have the My Documents folder
redirected to the Users Shared Folders folder that comes built into SBS.
Everything works the way I want it to in terms of being on the local
network, but now I need to configure this for the mobile users. What I am
trying to achieve is this: I would like the users profile to roam to the
laptops as well. I would like the profile to be synched with the one the
server, but only when there is a fast connection. When they dial in using
modems, I would rather the profile not synch. When I say profiles, I am
talking about folders such as my documents, as well as things like my
Outlook Express newsgroup folders and Internet Explorer favorites (they get
email using Outlook and I know how to set that up).
I don't think this can be done using roaming user profiles, right? It seems
to me that the only way to do it is by setting up offline folders. I'm not
sure about this though. That said, how do I set up the user accounts on the
laptop? I found article KB 312138
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312138) but I did
not have the option of choosing roaming profile. Do I even need to mess with
roaming user profiles given the scope of what I want to do? Also, are there
any changes that need to be made from the server end?
The way I have always configured the laptops in the past, the user simply
had a local account (this is because I didn't want to have them have to dial
into the server just to log into their computer) and the laptop was never
configured to be part of a network. How does this change now.
I appreciate any help on this one. Thanks,
Chris Tag: Heads up, virus with a dictionary.. Tag: 155443

SBS 2003 dial up connection
Hi,
This post is relevant to SBS 2003 but there does not appear to be a user group for this version as yet ;-) Basically the issue is this, a new installation using one BT line for sending and retrieving faxes and also for internet access and email etc. I know this is not the best method but the clients don't want broadband and will not install a second line. That said the problem is that once an internet connection has been made the dial up connection will not drop the line after a specified time thus permitting fax retrieval etc i.e. its permanently connected, the connection is via BT dialup unlimited access. My question is this: is there any way SBS 2003 can be forced to drop the line and how can you monitor if its connected? As there does not appear to be any dialup connection icons showing

The e-mail system was unable to deliver the message, but did not
report a specific reason. Check the address and try again. If it still
fails, contact your system administrator.

Users to receive mail from multiple domain names
A client currently has an SBS2000 server with all mail for the aaaa.co.nz
being directed to the server.
Originally the domain name should have been bbbbaaaa.co.nz but namy years
ago they thought they would abbreviate the domain name (thus aaaa.co.nz)
The company has been directed from their corporate leaders that they are to
use the proper name of bbbbaaaa.co.nz
I have registered the name of bbbbaaaa.co.nz and will direct mail to the
server but am unsure how to set up the SBS.
For example, I want John to receive mail addressed to john@aaaa.co.nz and
also john@bbbbaaaa.co.nz and show his default return address as
john@bbbbaaaa.co.nz
Can someone please direct me to the relevent KB article that explains how to
do this
Thanks

Summit Song of the Day - Day 3
Tuesday we all hopped on buses from our various downtown hotels and were
taken to the Microsoft campus. I believe the bus drivers were all instructed
to drive us around the entire facility to see the entire layout. Lots of
buildings - separated by parking lots, soccer fields, baseball fields, and
more parking lots.
The SBS team spent the morning with the other Windows server MVP's being
briefed. The afternoon was spent with the SBS Dev team, with them asking us
questions all day. Personally, I wrapped up the day by attending my first
Seder meal with Steven Teiger (SBS MVP for Israel)
So, in honor of all the work and effort, I turn to Paul Simon for
inspiration:
50 Ways To Leave Your Lover
(aka, 50 ways to fix your server)
"The problem is all inside your head", I heard Roger say to me
The answer is easy if you take it logically
I'd like to help you with your patches that you need
There must be fifty ways to fix your lover
Les Conner said it's really not my habit to intrude
Furthermore, I hope Jeff's meaning won't be lost or misconstrued
But I'll repeat myself at the risk of sounding like Nick
There must be fifty ways to fix your server
Fifty ways to fix your server
You just slip out the disk, Cal
Make a new plan, Jim
You don't need to be coy, Chad
Just upgrade to 2003
Hop on the bus, Cris
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Steve
And reboot the server for me.
Charlie Anthe said it grieves me so to see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again
I said I appreciate that and would you please explain
About the fifty ways to get free CALS
Henry said I'm gonna sleep on it tonight
And I believe in the morning you'll begin to see the light
And then we all agreed that faxing ain't what it supposed to be
There must be fifty ways to fix your server
Fifty ways to fix your server
You just slip out the disk, Cal
Make a new plan, Jim
You don't need to be coy, Chad
Just upgrade to 2003
Hop on the bus, Cris
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Steve
And reboot the server for me.

It's been a long time since I last saw an "rtf".
Must say I'd completely forgotten about them.
