trend micro messaging suite
Hi
last night i was running server protect at around 11pm. I
installed it yesterday for the first time on the network.
The Server hung but was still scanning files and working.
This morning at around 8am, i had to reboot the server and
all appears fine now.
I excluded the files/folders necessary from scanning such
as ntds, sysvol, exchange folders, ntds.dit etc etc.
Why would it hang?
Server has got 256mb of RAM.
Logs did not show anything as to why it hung as it was
still working in the background.
How can i get around this as i do not want to reboot
everymorning?

SBS2000 never hangs up dialup
I have an ISDN dialup and collect mail with the pop3 connector on
Exchange server. I have a batch file to trigger the dialup with
rasdial on the command line before pop3 collection every 30 minutes.
Everything works fine except that the server never drops the dial-up
connection. The idle time is set to 5 minutes but there seems to be
continual network activity keeping the line up. The server is running
DHCP and all clients are set to get their IP and DNS information
automatically from the server. IP routing is enabled as is packet
filtering. I have re-run the wizards from SBS Administrator console to
no avail. This is really driving me nuts any help or suggestions would
be greatly appreciated. Tag: Have SA for SBS2k, when & how do I get SBS2003? Tag: 129206

Terminal Services Ports
I am working with a SBS 2000 server that has TS enabled.
The server has 2 nics with one with a 12.102.XXX.XXX real
world IP. If I try to access TS using the same ISP that
the server is on I get a time out error. If I use a
diffrent ISP (Road Runner) then everything works. The
server ISP says they are blocking all non-essential
traffic on their net between computers. If I can provide
them with the ports that TS uses they will open them up
for me. Any one know what ports are used for TS?

SQL Server 2000 & MSDE 2000
We recently purchased a new server with Small Business

remote connection
Hi! I have a client who needs to take a laptop to a remote location and
connect to query databases 3x/week. I can connect remotely as
administrator--I do all the time.
I need the employee to connect into their own pc and run it as if they were
sitting there. Is that possible?
I have vpn open, I can connect but it doesn't do anything other than show
that I'm connnected. I can't view the network, etc.
Do I need a script? How do I do this?
Details:
SBS2k as pdc. Win2k server as member server (file and print serving). The
data is on the member server. The pdc merely handles AD and connections.
All ip's are manually assigned--10.0.0.#. The external nic is of the
192.168.#.# (can't remember). They have a router. ADSL connection. All
workstations running Win XP SP1 with u2date patches. Servers were patched
up to date as of Monday.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't have the applications (MS
Office) loaded on either server.

SBS2000 Implementation
I'm working with a business who have two, shortly to be
three, locations. For reasons unknown to me they are
currently running two separate installations of SBS2000
(one for each site). The three locations will all have
broadband connections to the internet. The servers are
currently used for file serving and email through exchange.
The choices I can see are:
1) That they consolidate to one copy of SBS 2000 at the
main site and have win2k servers configured as additional
domain controllers at each of the other sites. (The
additional servers will also require ISA server for proxy
control). Each of the sites will be linked by VPN. The
additional domain controllers will allow local login and
centralised admin via AD.
2) They implement Win2k server at each of the three sites.
One server will also run Exchange server for clients at all
three locations. Each server will also have ISA server for
proxy controls. Each site will be linked by VPN. AD
replication will allow local logins and cetralised management.
I know the second option is more expensive but the customer
is getting close to the 50 user SBS threshhold. Any
thoughts would be appreciated.

Upgrading from 4.5 to 2000 on new computer - recommendations?

Restoring Information Store with Veritas
Ok, using sbs 2000 fully patched. Our exchange store got
corrupted and I was trying to restore it using veritas
backup exec. Came accross a problem that I hope someone
may be able to solve.
Every time I tried, the restore job failed. In event
manager it had:
Source: ESE BACKUP
Event: 904
"Information Store (1300) Callback function call
ErrESECBRestoreGetDestination ended with error 0xC7FE1F41
Database is in use."
According to MS KB Article 291996 (and Veritas) this is
caused by not dismounting the databases or by failing to
allow overwrite permissions by restore jobs. However, I
have definitely done this on the Mailbox Store and the
Public Folder Store and it still doesnt work. I have also
checked that the store names are the same on the backup
tape as on the server.
I have kind of got round the problem by just moving all
the files from the MDBDATA folder and then restoring.
This isnt ideal and I was wondering if anyone knows why
this may be happening.

'Retrieve Now' Button missing from POP3 Connector
We have just done a fresh install (on a new computer) of
SBS-2000 from a Microsoft Action Pack install disk set.
This is the version of SBS-2000 that is shipped with SP4
for Windows 2000 and SP3 for Exchange.
All went smoothly. Everything works OK. Just
the 'Retrieve Now' button is missing from the POP3
Connector! Re-installed the connector several times
(including manually removing all references to it from
the registry on the last occasion) to no avail.
The connector works fine, we just can't manually force a

Any ideas how a button can go missing yet the connector
still work? And any ideas how we can get it back?

Exchange and ADSL (Again!)
Hi everyone,
I have a SBS2000 that I've just had to reformat and reinstall. On
reinstallation, the customer wanted to upgrade from a permanent dialup
connection to an ADSL connection.
I have installed a 2nd NIC in the SBS box, and can successfully web browse
from each workstation so I know the Internet connectivity is OK.
Here is my problem:
The server is unable to send or receive any e-mail.
Mail just sits in the outbound queue. I have run the Internet Connection
Wizard and answered all the relevent questions correctly (5 times).
The internet connection has a static IP address which has been correctly
configured, and the MX records for the domain point to the correct IP
address. However, I am unable to ping the IP address, telnet to port 25 of
the IP address or traceroute to the IP address.
As far as I can see, I have opened port 25 on ISA server
This one has me stumped. Any ideas?

When i recovered the mailboxes, i only have got one

not have another mailbox for administrator without a red x
through it, so it will be deleted in about 30 days.
What are the consequences if this happens and what can i
do to fix it?
I do not need the mail in the administrator mailbox with
the red x through it.
If need be, how do i create another administrator mailbox
if i purge the one with the red x through it?
Do you think that this is OK to do?
I do not think it is a good idea to delete the

Please help!!, Exchange on SBS
When attempting the Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3 Update

proceed :
"You can use this edition of Microsoft Exchange 2000

and handling mail happily (Version 6, Build 4629.1,
Service Pack 1) on Windows 2000 Server (now at SP4 from
the SBSSP1a).
Third-party apps being disabled makes no difference, and
this is a clean install running several months without
issue or Event until now.
File-capture methods don't spot any miscreants, so I'm
leaning towards corrupt or erroneous Registry
referrals...but I just can't seem to track any down?
I'm an MCSA (2k), working towards (.NET) MCSE and enjoy
hunting down info & solutions at the "usual sources"
(GoogleGroups, EventID, Technet, MS Community Newsgroups

this, or else similar scenarios that I can adapt from, but
really, this one has me stumped....is there someone who
can PLEASE help?

I know this is kind of hard to say since no one has seen 2395A yet?
The reason I'm conducting this informal poll is because the powers to be at

SBS 4.X to SBS2K - Exchange question
I plan on replacing an existing server with a new one and upgrade the
existing SBS 4 with Exchange 5.5 to SBS2K. My plan is to export all the
mailboxes using ExMerge. Then when I get SBS2K all setup, then ExMerge all
the mailboxes back into Exchange 2000. This seems to be the recommended
practice and I agree with this strategy. My question is; When the users
start replying to other users within the same W2K domain, will it be
delivered? I ask because usually the x.400 and other email settings are
different between E5.5 and E2K. Or do they have to reply but choose the user
out of the GAL? I do plan on using the same server name as the old one.

permissions
Hi
I am struggling with permissions problem.
I have created a user called tom. tom is a member of a
group called employee.
I want tom to have no access to c drive and access to only
one file on d drive which is in a directory on d drive.
Tom's "member of" properties only lists him as a member of
domain users/users and the employee group.
I cannot remove the domain users group from his "member
of" properties.
What if i give the employee group access to c drive with
only list permissions and access to d drive with list
permissions to the folder and write/modify/read access to
the file?
There is just one problem. The default permissions for c
drive and d drive is everyone full control. How does this
effect the permissions i set for the employee group on the
same folder. Does the everyone group permissions override
everything and if so, what if I set deny everything on C
drive and deny everything on d drive except that file?

around this? Tag: Have SA for SBS2k, when & how do I get SBS2003? Tag: 129027
HELP!! Users get errors opening Word Docs & Saving
Hello All,
I have a problem. I recently moved a small organization
from SBS 4.5 to SBS 2K. I did a clean install on a new
machine. I wasn't worried about migrating users or their
exchange data or pushing shared folders & their
permissions. So I simply backed everything up that they
would need to tape backup and removeable HDD's.
Now that the new server is up and running everyone is
online and working and using ISA and exchange, however
all of my users (6) complain every day that when they
open a word document from a shared folder and they try to
save it after making modifications they get a slew of
different errors. Sometimes they are told to save to a
different file name, other times they get an out of
memory error cannot safe the file to this volume. and
other times it just won't allow them to save because of
permissions problems.
I have reset permissions on the share, it is on a
partition on the second physical drive and I have turned
off the trend micro office scan real time scanner
thinking it was slowing access times to the server. I
also upgraded the server to 1.2 gigs of ecc sdram
thinking 2K & exchange were hogging up the ram which it
seems every time I look the ram is maxed out but I am
stumped.

VPN through Linksys router into SBS
I'd like to make a VPN connection from my home computer

router sitting between the internet and my home computer.
I noticed in the instructions it states that VPN's that
use IPSec and AH (Authentication Header known as protocol
51) are incompatible with the router. AH has limitations
due to occasional incompatibility with the NAT standard.
Can anyone shed any light on this - I've used VPN in the

problems but I can't recall ever hearing anything about
AH. Just thought I'd ask - guess I'll find out once I get
home and try it. Tag: Have SA for SBS2k, when & how do I get SBS2003? Tag: 128997

OT: telnet
Hi,
I recently had to do some network troubleshooting and
learned a little about telnet (sorry if my questions are
dumb, I'm having a little trouble figuring out some basics)
I was given this link to help test if port 25 was open.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;153119
I was able to send an email via telnet but have a couple
fo questions. After telnetting to port 25, I noticed the
telnet commands (close, set, etc) no longer worked. Why?
Is this because once I entered the port I was no longer
telnetting but was using the smtp protocol? I also
noticed I could not see what I was typing (I was using the
command shell). Is there away to toggle some function so
I can see the text?
If I telnetted to port 80, nothing would happen until I
hit enter twice, this would cause the delivery of a 404
html page (displayed in the command shell). Once again,
after telnetting to port 80, none of the telnet commands
worked. So obviously I was connecting to the web server
but it's not clear what was going on.
If I went to a known closed port, I would get a could not
connect message. (which is good)
I'm just confused on what you can do via telnet besides
access open ports. I have a copy of basic commands etc
but I'm missign a few fundamentals.
Any explination on what was happening would be very
benificial.

Help! Strange problems in AD, Exchange
Okay this is going to be a bit winded, just to get as much information as I
can in this first post.
Without going into the details, I recently went thru a migration process to
get SBS2K installed on another PC using the NT4 BDC -> PDC and Win2K server
upgrade, and transferring the 5 FSMO roles. I'm going to have to do this
process again because I have to get SBS2K back on the original PC after
upgrading the hardware. I left the "temp" DC running (call it "DCTemp")
without demoting it after transferring the roles.
Here's some of the steps that may be relevant to my problem (to the best of
my recollection and notes from the install):
- After transferring the roles onto the SBS PC, I ran SBS setup without
Exchange (no ISA either), and then installed Exchange 5.5 with SP3 (it
failed the first time thru, then I did a manual removal of Exchange 5.5, and
then did Q309484 before setup of 5.5 again). I had a heck of a time trying
to get ISINTEG -patch to work, even going thru ESEUTIL on them several times
(on a 12 GB priv.edb no less), before it finally restored and Exchange 5.5
SP3 was up and running (the only other problem was the LDAP ports
conflicting, but that was easily resolved). I also had to do a directory
export from the Exchange 5.5, and reimport back into Exchange Administrator
on the SBS2K but I finally could log in from a workstation and send mail
(internally), use public folders working, etc.
- Next was the inplace upgrade to Exchange 2000, I got an error during the
installation process and it aborted near the end, saying it couldn't install
the Exchange MMC snap-in. I noticed that the databases "seemed" to have been
upgraded to Exchange 2000 (with the appropriate STM files for priv and pub).
I then tried to reinstall Exchange 2000 again, but this time it told me that
setup couldn't continue without removing the IMC from Exchange. I couldn't
get in Exchange Administrator, and the System Manager was missing so there
was no way to do this that I knew of.
- So, I went back to an image I made after transferring the FSMO roles, just
before the SBS setup. I got an error in the event logs about AD not having
the same information, but it seemed to take the "newer" information from
DCTemp fine.
- At this point (from the image), I ran the SBS setup (at first without
Exchange 2000 and ISA), then ran the Exchange 2000 setup with the
/disasterrecovery switch. I had already renamed the directory where it used
to be, and after setup, I moved the priv.edb, priv.stm, pub.edb and pub.stm
files along with the logs (essentially the whole mdbdata dir) back, and
mounted the stores. Okay, life is good at this point (or seems to be), as
Exchange 2000 is officially up and I could log in from a workstation and use
the services.
- Next came the SPs, and I applied Win2K SP4 first, then Exchange SP3. Ouch!
I got TONS of problems after reboot (MSExchange Event IDs 5000, 1121 with
error code 0x80004005, MSExchangeMTA Event ID 125, MSExchangeSA Event IDs
9098 and 9175, etc etc.). I tried a few things from some KBs but nothing
seemed to work. The IS simply refused to start, and thus I couldn't mount
the stores.
- I then proceeded to reinstall Exchange 2000 from the SBS setup, and got
the error "Setup detected another version, service pack needs to be
reapplied" or something like that. I then clicked Yes to all the files that
needed to overwrite the newer ones installed by SP3 (what a pain this was, I
wish there was a "Yes to All" option instead of the Yes, No, No to All that
is available). Setup completed BUT it said there were some problems with
Active Directory (no details). I rebooted and (phew) Exchange was working
again.
- I went ahead and installed the TM C/S/M suite but noticed that ScanMail
wasn't working (couldn't load the databases when I went into the management
console). I'm going to attribute this to Exchange not being up to SP3, but
it may be related.
Okay, now that I've laid the groundwork, here are the problems I'm noticing:
- DCTemp and SBS AD seems to be out of sync. I noticed this when a user came
to me and said his account was locked out - AD Users & Computers on SBS
looked fine, but on DCTemp the account was locked out. Both PCs have been
running long enough for things to propagate and there are a few other
inconsistencies that make me believe the replication is fubared.
- I used to have an "Everyone" group in Exchange 5.5, but that didn't seem
to carry over. When I try to recreate this, I get a "user already exists",
but I can't find it anywhere in AD (even with the find feature).
- I also can't create any NEW users on AD on the SBS with either the Add
Users Wizard or from AD. I have to go create the new user in DCTemp (it seem
to replicate okay to SBS, but I can't create mailboxes in AD from DCTemp).
- Using the Migrate Users Wizard, I tried to give the user a mailbox - it
seems to work but in System Manager, the mailbox simply isn't there. AD
lists the user as having an email address, but I'm not sure where the mail
goes.
So.. What steps should I take at this point? Are there general
troubleshooting utilities that I can run to check AD and Exchange? I'm not
sure if NTDSUTIL is useful at this point because things "seem" to work and
the database doesnt seem corrupted. Or should I try a reinstall from SBS
setup again?
I'm going to do another setup on the old SBS 4.5 PC, after doing some
hardware upgrade. If I just leave the current SBS running as is, and do
another FSMO roles tranfer, and do the SBS setup on the final hardware, with
an Exchange 2000 database forklift, should life be fine? Or should I really
look into fixing the above problems first?
Just a bit Frustrated.. (especially after the weekend copying over the
Exchange databases, and defraging, checking integrity, defraging, recopying,
defraging, etc. which took 15+ hours).
Any insights would be appreciated. Tag: Have SA for SBS2k, when & how do I get SBS2003? Tag: 128985
Creating a New Folder question on a shared drive.
Hello,
On several XP clients, I am noticing that when a user creates a new folder
on a shared drive on the SBS2000 server, the window behavior is different.
Before
1. Create a new folder
2. The pc jumps to the NEW FOLDER, it is highlighted in blue, and the user
types in the new name
Now
1. Create a new folder
2. Nothing happens
3. You have to scroll down
4. The NEW FOLDER was created
5. You have to right click
6. Rename it.
What has changed, do you think?

Outgoing SMTP Mail
Please help.
I am having a problem setting up a clients new SBS2000
install. Incoming mail is recieved via the popconnector
which gets mail from an ISP pop account. This works ok.
Outgoing mail is setup via the SMTP connector to send
mail via the internet providers SMTP server
(smtp.bulldogdsl.com). I have entered the ISP SMTP server
as a smart host as per the MS instructions.
When a domain user/computer uses Outlook, email is
recieved ok and when email is sent to an internet address
everything seems to work fine but the receipient never
gets the message. However, no NDR is recieved by the
sender and the email queues do not show any mail waiting
to go. What am I doing wrong? I can ping the smtp server
of the ISP from the SBS2000 and I can telnet to it as
well. Help!! Tag: Have SA for SBS2k, when & how do I get SBS2003? Tag: 128983
shared fax server error
I have setup the shared fax server on my sbs2000 sp4. I

Add User Wizard not adding e-mail address
SBS 2000, using To Do List to add a user (have done this
many times before). User account is created but e-mail
address is not -- at least not in the Admin Console or
Exchange admin "Users" panes (yes, I've refreshed
multiple times). This is upwards of 3 hours after
creating the account (normally there is some lag but on
the order of minutes). When I go to the Exchange admin
console and look at my available Exchange tasks for this
user, I have a "delete" and a "move" option but not
an "add" option for an e-mail address, so I take it
enough configuration has taken place that an e-mail
address, etc. are being detected on some level (but
aren't completing).
No oddball characters in the username, or anything like
that. Should be straightforward, like a dozen times
before, but it's not working.
I've deleted the account and tried to reinstantiate it
twice already, and it doesn't make a difference. The e-
mail information just never appears. Any ideas? Tag: Have SA for SBS2k, when & how do I get SBS2003? Tag: 128968
Guru ? - Creating shared folders to resolve issue previously posted.
The Strain I previously posted has sort of died out. We have identified the
problem but not the solution.
This is a stumper:
When using the SBS console "to do list" - add user (wizard)
I get the following message: "The home folder you specified does not exist"
Any words of wisdom regarding this funny little message? Specifically:
What home folder might they be refering to? Answer was: Shared Folder does
not exist? But which one?
How do I resolve this issue?
What folders need to be recreated?
What process is used to create these folders? Is their a wizrad or a
reinstallation process? Tag: Have SA for SBS2k, when & how do I get SBS2003? Tag: 128965
