I have a SBS 2000 server running with Exchange 2000 on it
along with some other stuff included with SBS 2000.

My problem is that I keep losing space in my hard drive.
A month ago I had 1.5 Gb, last Friday - 750 Mb, and today
30 Mb. I checked on some mailboxes and found a few that
were kind of big, but they have always been big.

Does anyone know what could be going on or what I can do
to stop this. I ran virus scan and couldn't find
anything. I did disk clean and freed up some space, but
with in 1/2 hour is was back down to 30 Mb or so.

Thank you in advance for any help you may have.

Chris

DO a search on that drive for anythign larger than 10 megs.
That way you'll see exactly what is eating your space.

I did a search by size and there was a media file under
the Exchnsrvr\MDBDATA folder called priv1 that was
1.16Gb. Could this be part of the security flaw in
Exchange that the patch just came out for? I have
installed the patch, but haven't had a chance to restart
the server yet.

Thanks for the quick response. Thanks in advance for any
help.

That's the information store... it's supposed to be big.

Are you doing an Exchange aware backup (NTBACKUP)??? Check if you have a
lot of .log (~5MB) files in the exchsrvr\mtbdata directory that are not
being purged (do not delete them manually).

Yes, there are a bunch of the log .txt files in there
that are a little over 5MB each. How do I get rid of
them?

That file I mentioned before is now a Winamp file that is
1.2 Gb. The first time I checked it yesterday it was a
HTML file, then this morning it was a Media file and now
it is a Winamp file. That seems really strange to me.

Thanks for any help.

How are you doing a system backup. When you do a backup with a program that
will properly backup the exchange data bases it will do what's called
"flushing the logs" - this is the same at getting rid of these files.

Bear in mind the NTbackup that comes with SBS will propery backup the
exchange databases. Have a look at where you select the files to backup.
Below where you select the drives and files to back up you should be able to
select the exchange databases.

Hope that helps somewhat............

Here is the proper way to backup your server and get rid of the logs:
http://www.smallbizserver.net/SBS2000/How_do_I_backup_my_server.aspx

You need to backup your server regularly so the logs get purged.

I use Veritas Backup Exec to backup the server everyday.
This backs up files, SQL databases, and Exchange. I
haven't seen anywhere the option to dump the logs though.

Thanks for the help.

Have a look at the properties for the daily backup job and look at the
exchange tab.

The "backup method" should be set to: Full - database & logs (Flush
committed logs) or Incremental - logs (Flush committed logs)

hope that helps.......

I set the backup settings to Full - database & logs
(Flush committed logs), but after the backup last night
the logs are still in there. Over 700 of them.

Thanks for any help.

Chris

What backup program are you using? We had an account that Backup Exec
was reporting errors on the information store backup. We ran some
repairs following this article. Note that best practice is that you
stop the information store to make a copy of your pub and priv before
you start repairs. The logs go away with this process. Note that you
can lose messages allong the way. I also recommend that folks clean
out their mailboxes of old junk and empty the deleted items folder
before doing repairs.
