    - Remote setup - Laptop/Desktop of Windows XP Pro The boss has a laptop which was configured on the network and used at the office initially. Then he wanted to use it from home over his cable modem. A VPN connection was setup for him to use the laptop at home. Interesting (and nice) he was able to logon to the Windows XP Pro laptop at home onto the domain. Appears Windows XP cached the information and allowed the login. Cool! Once he configured his network settings to use the cable modem, he established the VPN connection to the office and everything worked as though he was onsite. Excellent! Now he says for the cost of a cheap computer he would rather setup a desktop at home. Unit was ordered and configured the same as the laptop. He takes it home and tries to login to the domain (just as he does with the laptop) and he cannot since the domain controller can't be found. Bummer! OK - Can someone explain to me why it worked (surprisingly) with the laptop and not the desktop? Is there some setting that can be configured to allow the desktop to work as the laptop does?     - SBS Server VPN speed and mapping problems. Hello, I wonder if anybody can help me please. We are setting up SBS on a server. We will want to VPN into it from a number of laptops in order to deal with exchange email, and file/print share. The server is a test one intially. It is a celeron 1700 with 128Mb and a 70 gig drive. We have managed to pinhole the server's adsl router and we can dial into the server with VPN from a remote laptop using a telephone line. Bus it is unbelievably slow, even to send a simple massage, and will not see the users shared folders etc. Q1. What things are the main governing factors surrounding the VPN speed problem we have.     - OWA Hi All, I've tried to set up OWA on our SBS, when a user attempts to attemts to logon with their username/password, they get this page cannot be displayed with the following error.     - Exchange Information Store won't mount. My client has SBS2000 SP3 and receintly had a system crash due to a bad memory module. All data including the exchange server is on a separate drive from the system drive and was intact. The SBS server was re-built from scratch and everything seems to be OK, except the Exchange information store does not mount. There are no error messages other than PerfLib errors in the Event log and the services are all running. Using the Administrator console, right clicking on the mailbox store or the public folder store and choosing "Mount Store" I get the folowing error: "An internal processing error has occurred. Try restarting the the Exchange System Manager or the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, or both. ID no: c1041724 Exchange System Manager" I have tried everything without success and need some assistance. They also have been operating on a back-up SBS 2000 Exchange server in the mean time and that data needs be migrated to the main server once I can get it running.     - Upgrade from NFR to OEM SBS2K I am building a new server, and I have installed my NFR version of SBS 2000 SP1 for testing and configuration purposes. I intend to install the server and "go live" next weekend, however the SBS2K I ordered (legit) won't be in till late next week, its backordered. Can I do an inplace upgrade from my NFR version to the OEM version without violating licensing or screwing up my configurations? Xeon 2.44 Single with 1GB RAM and Adaptec Zero Raid 5 with a hot spare. BTW, I wanted to install W2003 Server, but there are too many compatability issues.     - NT 4 upgrade to SBS 2000 successful Hi, gang-- I just wanted to report on my experience upgrading an NT 4 domain controller to SBS 2000 on new hardware. It went beautifully. I spent several days rehearsing the procedure on test equipment in our office. On a Monday morning I took a spare server to the client and did a scratch install of NT 4; in 45 minutes the spare was set as a backup domain controller and I was on my way back to the office. I spent the rest of Monday working on the project. First, I mirrored the drive in the spare machine, disconnected it, and put it aside just in case. I deleted the references to the existing server, forced the BDC to become a PDC, and then upgraded it to Windows 2000. Then I connected it to the new server, ran DCPROMO on the new server, and I was almost ready to go. I found that I needed DNS on both servers (may not happen automatically). It also helps a lot if each server has the DNS of the other server as an alternate in the TCP/IP properties of the network card-- that way, the domain transfer goes smoothly. I finally decided to run DCPROMO on the spare to demote it while still connected so that the five FSMO roles got transferred automatically; in my testing, I had trouble when I simply disconnected the spare-- and I had the mirror drive on the side if I had to start over again. The final catch was that the new server was not a global catalog server; I had to tell it that it was a GC. After all that, the new server was all set for SBS 2000. The biggest disappointment was in having to use a new server name, because the existing server's name had an underscore in it. If not for that, the new server could have been dropped in almost unnoticed; instead, using a second switch, we spent all of Friday transferring one workstation at a time to the "new network." In the end we migrated about 25 workstations over 12 hours on Friday and 5 hours Saturday morning with almost no downtime to the client. (Lots of people were off that Friday, so as we worked on the workstations of the missing people, the others continued to work off the old server and an additional SQL server that remained functional throughout.)     - New VPN: DNS won't resolve I'm trying to bring up a new VPN on our SBS2K system and only have it half working. DNS won't resolve names on the remote side. I can use MSTSC to administer it if I specify the IP address manually, but cannot access the server by name. Share browsing won't work either. Remote system is SBS 2K SP1 & Win2K SP4, and is a 2 NIC system with ISA running and the WAN NIC connected to Covad ADSL with a Zyxel 643 modem/router. The client is my XP Pro SP1 computer at home hooked up to a Netgear FR114P and Verizon DSL. I set up the VPN according to 320697 (How to Turn On And Configure Inbound VPN Access In Small Business Server 2000) and also followed Q292822, and had earlier set the system up with 2 NIC's per Q306802 when we first got DSL.     - Exchange w/SBS2000 I'm attemtping to use Exchange with my 2000 Small Business Server and Server2000 and it does not look like my exchange is fully installed. I see many messages that point me to this setup /domainprep, but I think that exists on exchange 2000, not SBS 2000 disks.     - Unable to delete Outlook 2000 emails Okay Guru's, here's a mind twister for you! While trying to delete a users emails from the INBOX or DELETED ITEMS folders of Outlook 2000(SBS Server 2000 - SP3 running Exchange), the following message appears: "The item could not be deleted. It was either moved or already deleted, or access was denied." Given the following facts, what might be the problem? 1. I am logged onto the server and have open the users mailbox in order to deleted these emails. 2. This user is not logged on nor using outlook on any other machines. 3. These emails have been in this state for 3 weeks, so synchronization probably isn't an issue. 4. The "From" field is blank, if that matters. 5. With Preview turned on, the following message is displayed: " This item contains active content that cannot be displayed in the preview pane. Open the item to read its contents." 6.     - DNS or Smart Host Just moved from dial-up ISDN to Comcast cable. . It's a 2NIC server, external NIC attached to cable modem. My external NIC settings are: IP from Comcast dhcp (dhcp enabled) ("persistent" ip is essentially static for our purposes) mask from Comcast dhcp Gateway from comcast dhcp Set DNS to internal nic 198.162.16.2 Ran ICW and tried to use DNS for outgoing, but it didn't work. Finally got Comcast's smtp.comcast.net server to work as a smart host. Should I use DNS or a smart host for outgoing? Everthing I read says use DNS, but you must have a static IP. Well, we don't exactly, but I can't see that that would make any difference in outgoing mail. But I couldn't get it to work. If I should be using DNS, any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Choose Your Passwords Carefully - WORM_TZET.A (Low Risk) WORM_TZET.A contains multiple components, with both worm and backdoor capabilities. It propagates by penetrating systems with weak passwords and dropping a copy of itself into these vulnerable systems. It affects systems running Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, and XP. Once the dropper component executes, it drops 11 files into the %Windows%\System32 directory (%Windows% refers to the Windows folder, which is typically C:\Windows or C:\WINNT). The dropper component of this malware automatically executes one of the files, IGLXTRAY.EXE, which in turn loads another file; a malicious IRC script called WSUBSYS.WAV. Once the malicious IRC script is loaded, it creates a registry entry so that yet another file, IGLMTRAY.EXE, executes at every Windows startup. IGLMTRAY.EXE, in turn, loads IGLXTRAY.EXE. Thus, the registry entry indirectly enables the malware mIRC program to run at startup. This malware is able to propagate into vulnerable systems with weak passwords. It scans for target systems and tries to access them using the following user names: administrator Administrator admin root teacher student cs sql database user network wwwadmin sqladmin administrator wwwroot guest server And the following passwords: (no password) password admin 12345 123 123456 654321 abc123 asdf secret password123 administrator qwerty qwertyuiop temp123 Administrator admin123 abc admin temp changeme pass sqlagent root teacher student test test123 sql database user network wwwadmin guest server This malware uses its batch file component, AUTHEXEC.BAT (BAT_TZET.A), to connect to the vulnerable systems. Once a vulnerable system is found, it drops a copy of itself into the target system. The dropped copy is named either X586.EXE or a predefined file name. After it successfully drops the malware copy into the remote system, it executes the copy remotely using the PsExec utility. Once active on a system, WORM_TZET.A connects to a remote IRC server, through which a remote user can gain control over the affected system using IRC commands. It allows remote users to do the following: a.. Use the affected system to perform a Denial of Service (DoS) attack against other systems b.. Retrieve system information c.. Join a specified IRC channel and create IRC clones d.. Manipulate the file system (delete and rename files) e.. Uninstall the malware f.. Terminate running programs g..     - Publishing I cannot seem to publish OWA and a public web site through the SBS. I have run the ICW several times and i have followed the directions on from isaserver.org. Someone please help. Currently, i cannot even get to OWA from inside the network. Background info: My sbs machine has 2 nics one dhcp from ISP the other 192.168.225.1 Isaserver.org says to make the machine a secure nat client by simply giving the internal nic the default gateway of itself. I cannot connect to the internet when i do this. The only way to connect to the internet is to use a proxy connection with the IP addy of 192.168.225.1 or fqdn of the server itself.     - changing main NIC card in SBS2000 server Hello. My customer is running SBS2000, with all current SPs applied. Their SBS server has one onboard 10/100 NIC card. They have a dialup modem for their Internet connection. They have about 35 PCs on the network, and LAN connections to the server have been getting slower and slower as the traffic increases. We are considering adding a new gigabit network card in the SBS2000 server, and disabling the onboard NIC card. We would configure the new gigabit NIC card with the same IP info as the prior onboard NIC (192.168.16.2, etc.). QUESTION 1: Is this as simple as it sounds? Or is switching the main LAN NIC card going to introduce a bunch of problems? QUESTION 2: What would be the actual steps? I am thinking... - install the new NIC card. Assign is a temporary IP (such as 192.198.16.3). - reboot - disable the original network card. - change the IP on the new NIC card from 192.168.16.3 to 192.168.16.2 - rerun the ICW - reboot Does that sequence/plan sound okay ? Would you suggest/recommend anything different? I am just trying to think of everything in advance. I won't have much time while onsite to deal with unexpected problems. Thanks.     - Internet Connection Wizard My SBS2000 setup is 2 Nics with DSL access via a router. When I run ICW, the only way I can get access to the internet is when I choose Router and DON'T check the box that my router is connected to a 2nd NIC (even though it is). I can get access to the internet this way, but I'm having other problems. I've followed article 306802, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en- us;306802 but that doesn't work.     - Team Services Server Extensions on SBS I have a problem with server extensions on SBS. I had FPSE and STS installed. I removed FPSE and reinstalled STS from FP 2002. I am unable to do site administration. The application hangs when attempting to run any of the dlls. I checked IIS tab for Server Extensions 2002 and get the problem for fpadmindll.dll: not responding. When I check the server extensions on the server, I get: 'Server administration program and server extensions on web server are not compatible. Admin program is too old to use with this server.' 1. How to update the admin program to be compatible with SE 2002? 2. How to fix the 'not responding' when attempting to do site administration.     - OWA I cannot seem to publish OWA and a public web site through the SBS. I have run the ICW several times and i have followed the directions on from isaserver.org. Someone please help. Currently, i cannot even get to OWA from inside the network. Background info: My sbs machine has 2 nics one dhcp from ISP the other 192.168.225.1 Isaserver.org says to make the machine a secure nat client by simply giving the internal nic the default gateway of itself. I cannot connect to the internet when i do this. The only way to connect to the internet is to use a proxy connection with the IP addy of 192.168.225.1 or fqdn of the server itself.     - Certain users Unable to send email outside of LAN Recently I have several users that have been unable to send e-mails outside of our LAN, they get an error that says that they do not have permission to send to this recepient and to contact their administrator(me). I have checked the event logs and see not exchange related errors. A reboot of the server got some working but other stayed the same.     - Exchange/Email Configuration? I'm in the process of setting up a new SBS2k and I'm trying to think of how I want to set up the email. At this time, the company uses an outside ISP to host thier email. I plan on using the POP3 Connector to pull their email to the Exchange Server. The users now have an email address of Firstname@domain.com(ex. mike@domain.com). I don't think that this is the smart way of doing it. As i create users on the server now, i am using the first initial-last name concept. I know that i can just pull the email from the ISP and direct that email to the appropriate username, but is this the way that i should leave it or should i change their email names with the ISP to match the username on the network? There are only about 10 users that i need to do this for. Is this what i should do, or will this pose to be a business problem? Is there a way to migrate the users to use the new email address? I have full access to the web-access of the ISP to configure the emails. Should I create new accounts on the ISP to match the LAN usernames while keeping the old email and keep both until everyone is in full use of the new one? I would appreciate some opinions with this.     - changing LAN NIC card in SBS2000 server Hello. My customer is running SBS2000, with all current SPs applied. Their SBS server has one onboard 10/100 NIC card. They have a dialup modem for their Internet connection. They have about 35 PCs on the network, and LAN connections to the server have been getting slower and slower as the traffic increases. We are considering adding a new gigabit network card in the SBS2000 server, and disabling the onboard NIC card. We would configure the new gigabit NIC card with the same IP info as the prior onboard NIC (192.168.16.2, etc.). QUESTION 1: Is this as simple as it sounds? Or is switching the main LAN NIC card going to introduce a bunch of problems? QUESTION 2: What would be the actual steps? I am thinking... - install the new NIC card. Assign is a temporary IP (such as 192.198.16.3). - reboot - disable the original network card. - change the IP on the new NIC card from 192.168.16.3 to 192.168.16.2 - rerun the ICW - reboot Does that sequence/plan sound okay ? Would you suggest/recommend anything different? I am just trying to think of everything in advance. I won't have much time while onsite to deal with unexpected problems. Thanks.     - Group polices Vs Administrator Hi, I'm experimenting with Group policies, and have hit a snag. I want to disable things like the Control Panel on the workstations. I can set a global policy on the server using DSA.msc, but this also affects the SBS Server itself, which I don't want. How can I apply these policies to the workstations only, but not the server.     - merging pst files I have a customer with an sbs2000 box that had hard disk failure. A data recovery company has managed to get back most of their data. Users mail is now in the form of PST files. My question. How do I merge these user pst files back into the new server install. Step 2 with the EXmerge tool looks favourite. Can anyone confirm?     - Re-install of SBS 2000...HELP! We have been running SBS2000 now for around 2 years. The hardware the SBS sites on is getting out of date plus the fact that there is no redundancy...i.e. the HDD are not in RAID-5. In order to give the box some redundancy, we need to blank the HDD, join them to a new RAID-5 array/container and re- install the whole thing. We have never done this before...my only cause for concern is Exchange Mailboxes which probably need to be Exmerged and maybe a few other things like loosing AD Users and Computers. Is there a MS KB article on re-installing an SBS2000 or going from SBS2000 to SBS2000 as we may buy a new server to host the whole thing onto.     - Blocking applications like Kaaza. Hi, I'm setting up an SBS at a firm where the bosses son has already caused major problems with the existing system, by installing all sorts of stuff like Kaaza etc. It's a delicate path I have to take as his father does not seem to understand the importance of not running such junk on a business network, and his son, it seems can do no wrong! So: 1. On a default install of SBS2000, is Kaaza/Morpheus etc blocked, packet wise? I was considering: 1. Using Group Policy to remove such items as the firewall client, network configuration, CMD line from the Users control panel. 2. Making all users only Users rather than Admins of their local workstations (XP), that way they cannot install software. 3. Possibly using group policy to block certain applications from running. In the 3rd case, does anyone have a reasonably complete list of application names such as "Kaaza.exe". Might be worth trying to get of list of such apps together? Of course I could enable the Policy only allowing specific applications to run, but I suspect this could be more complex. Finally, what is to stop a user from simply renaming a blocked *.exe file in order to get around Group Policies blocking the application from running? I setup IP packet filter to allow the 5633 and 5634 ports, setup server publishing rule, and setup the Ports open on the 3COM router/Firewall, but maybe I am missing something.
