Have SBS 2000 server (SP4) with no backup domain controller.
DCDiag shows the following error in FMSOCheck:

Warning: DcGetDcName(GC_SERVER_REQUIRED) call failed, error 1355
A Global Catalog Server could not be located - All GC's are down.
Warning: DcGetDcName(TIME_SERVER) call failed, error 1355
A Time Server could not be located.
The server holding the PDC role is down.

I have no Netlogon share any more and clients can no longer log on.
Everything on the server seems to be working fine apart from this.
Clients can access their Exchange mailboxes with no problems.

I have tried a System State restore to no avail.

Active Directory & Sites clearly shows NTDS as a Global Catalog server.

Any ideas on how I can fix this ?

Would an in-place upgrade help?

Can you even successfully do an in-place upgrade of SBS 2000?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like it mght be related to no time server also. I know it can cause
problems if the server can't sync it's time. run this from a bacth file on
the server and see if this doesn't help.See if it is successful

net stop w32time
net time /setsntp:ntp2.usno.navy.mil
net start w32time
pause

The reason I got into this mess is long but in a nutshell:

Windows Installer 2 stopped working on the server and after contacting
Microsoft for assistance they had me reset various Security settings
including resetting security settings (secedit, etc. and loading
basicdc.inf security template, etc.) After trying all of these, My
Exchange server stopped working (Info Store would not start as well as
loss of global catalog and still got nowhere with Windows Installer
not working). They eventually recommended trying an in-place upgrade
which they would not sure would work or not or rebuliding from
scratch.

Having recent backups on hand I tried a system state restore which
achieved the benefit of getting Exchange working but still have no
Installer and more importantly no Global Catalog.

Hence, my call for help.

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for using Microsoft Technical Support Newsgroups.

Please check the GC DNS record at the following location:

DNS
|--ServerName
|--Forward Lookup Zones
|--DomainName
|--_msdcs
|--GC

Make sure you have a "(same as parent folder)" record that references your
internal IP address in that location.

If you do not have this record, right-click GC, select "New Host", leave the
Name section blank, enter your internal IP address and click Add Host.
Acknowledge the error that appears and OK your way out of the dialog.

Once again, thank you for using the newsgroups.

Best Regards,

I removed the external NIC from here and rebooted, no luck.

Reran ICW, no luck either.

Any other ideas?

Thank you.

I did have this entry but I also had an entry for the IP Address for
my external adapter which I have now deleted.

I will advise if this makes a difference.
