I have a Dell PowerEdge 2600 Dual 2.4 machine with 2GB running SBS (Exchange
and ISA) with 16 users. This system has been deployed for about 7 weeks now
and a problem has occurred for the last two weeks or so.
Every few days the system basically locks up and requires a reboot to get
everything running again. The course of events begins with the Information
Store shutting down and basically the system just gets slower and slower
from that point until a reboot is done. After the reboot everything is good
again for 2-3 days and the same issue occurs. Each time I have verified that
the Info Store is down and you can not simply restart it - that fails as
well. For the time being I have set a dependency on the Info Store service
that if it fails to reboot the PC. Hopefully this will buy me a few more
days.
Any suggestions?

Thanks
Kevin

I had a similiar problem to this about 6 months ago and
I'm racking my brains about what we did about it, all I
know is that you don't want to think about removing
exchange and re-installing it, that in it's self opens up
a new can of worms. We had to disconnect the mailboxes
from the users and run some routine on the database...
I'll be back with more info as it comes to me.

Hi Kevin....

I have had 3 dells (in as many months) with same problem. Each time it has
been memory. For some reason the supplied memory isn't up to scratch. My
first call / server took some persuading for Dell to come out and once
memory replaced server been fine. Other two calls, as soon as I mentioned
the original servers memory problem Dell were in and replaced memory no
questions asked. Again no problem since.

Cant prove it but think they trying to sell non ecc memory with servers
(cheap) and when replacing it is with ecc memory. Next order we will be
monitoring very closely.

However this might not be your problem...I would do this..Save event viewer
logs...Clear them then reboot. Check event viewer logs reading ALL including
the information ones to see if anything comes to light.

Are you running SMTP or Pop3 on email ? What virus checker...What Service
Packs on 2K, Exchange, ISA. Are you using SQL ?

The box is SP4 with SBS SP1A and Exchange SP3 plus the two post SP hotfixes.
ISA is SP1 with all fixes applied as well -- AV is Norton Copr including
Exchange and no scans are running during the lock up window. Memory could be
the issue but the funny thing is that all three of the lockups have come 2-3
days apart BUT within 1.5 hours of each other.

I have been thru the logs with a fine tooth comb and nothing out of the
ordinary is present Except when the store dies you get about 20 DCOM errors
right in a row. I even have been thru the FW logs thinking that a DOS was
perhaps taking place and they are clean as well..

I have run the Dell diag stuff and everything checks good from the hardwares
point....

Kevin,

I had what sounds like the same issue with a dell 2300. It *was* memory.
Mine took a week between spontanious restarts. The SBS becomes a creature of
habit - a particular memory block accessed in a certain way, and pfffffft.

The dell diagnotics can be run from the CD's, downloaded from dell, or from
the utility partition (if it's still there). There are two memory tests, a
quick and a complete. The quick is quick - and didn't find the error. The
complete test (which took a few hours with a gig of ram) found the error.
Removed the stick, and no problems since.

It may not be the problem in your case, but try the memory tests so you can
at least rule that out. You can probably find 3rd party mem checks for
download as well.

That was it ! thanks Gizmo, It was the Anti-Virus
Software, we used Sophos. The bit about disconnecting the
mailboxes was because of the fact we'd tried removing
Exchange from AD and re-installing, and it doesn't like it
one bit. No, it was definately the AV Software. We took a
chance and uninstalled it for a week and exchange ran as
normal. We then re-installed sophos and everything carried
on as normal. We also made sure that the AV was not trying
to scan drive M: - Hope you crack it
