A user has left and I wish to set exchange to automatically forward their
incoming mail to a new address outside the organisation, and delete the mail
so their mailbox does not fill up.

I can't sort this. Any clues. I'm sure I did it once before but just cant
find out how.

In AD Users create a new contact and give it the external address. Then on
the properties of the user, one of those Exchange tabs, Delivery options,
fill in the name of the contact. You can choose if you want the mail
delivered to the mailbox and to the contact, or just to the contact.

Thanks. I can see how this works.
I don't use contacts at AD level, well not up to now anyway.
I have created a contact, using a different name, but the contact is not
appearing in the list under Delivery Opions of any user. I am looking in
Entire Directory and the container for the domain of the computer.
Obviously I can see it in the Active directory of the Administrator Console.
Only users, shared folders and the like are visible. No contacts. I have
created several contacts to test this.

Any clues?

Simon

Did you create the contact in AD Users and Groups?

I have created the contact in
Active Directory Users & Groups / elmmaxdommain.elmmax.co.uk / users
I have added the contact to the group elmmaxdomain which is the universal
distribution group but this does not help.

I have just tried this.
I have created a new group. I have added the contact to the new group so the
group has a single entry.
I can see the new group in the list in the members in the Delivery Options
list. (I can only see users and groups in this list, not contacts). I should
be able to forward to the group, which is the single contact.
This is obviously a work around but something must be wrong for me not to be
able to see contacts?

Hi Simon,

You're in the right direction, but too far away.
Just open AD Users and Groups, stop. Right here create that new contact.

That's got it.
Thanks.
I've discovered lots of uses for contacts that I never knew existed.
