SBS2000 w/XP Pro clients, experiencing slow network performance when opening more than one connection to server
Hello,
I have a small network with an SBS2000 server on a Proliant ML350G3 (Fully loaded), and 4 XP Pro Workstations (HP D220's w/512MB Ram). The network performs well until we initiate more than one connection to the server. For example, if we browse to a share on the server from a workstation and begin a copy of files from one directory to another the performance is poor until we close the window (leaving only the transfer or xcopy still running), then the performance increases dramatically. A network sniff reveals a large amount of SMB traffic and SMB request errors. An old Q article references this exact issue pre-SP1, however the server is W2kSP4.
We have configured the Oplock registry settings, but still do not have any success. Our primary business application resides on the server, and the db is accessed by the workstations. This network performance has brought our business to a grinding halt. Previously we ran another version of our primary business app on a very old Novell server with 32MB Ram and Win98 workstations and had great performance. We were forced to upgrade the HW and operating system to meet the requirements of the newer version of our primary business app.
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know
Thank you

XP client trying to use printer on a 4.5 SBS
I have just set up an XP pro client PC on my network and
want to connect to a LaserJet 4100dtn managed by my 4.5
SBS. I can see it when I do an add printer on my client
and indeed the add printer appears to have set it OK, I
can see the duplex settings etc., within properties.
Hwever, it won't print. I suspect that it needs the XP
printer driver (which I've downloaded from th HP web
site), but how do I get SBS 4.5 to upload it to the XP
client?
Any help would be appreciated.

SBS Network Places Problems
We have SBS 2000, running on a domain with about 50
clients, using either Win2k or WinXP.
The problem is that at any point in the day if anyone of
the clients looks in Network Places, they can only see 1
other computer on the domain.
When I looked on Event Viewer on the Server I get Event
ID 8003, Mrxsmb, where the master browser has recieved an
announment from a client machine X and that a vote has
taken place.
The machine X is then the only one that anyone can see in
Network Places.
Is there anyway to stop these votes from happening and
keeping the Server as the only master browser. Tag: SBS 2003 Forum Tag: 142779
roaming laptop user finds blank COMPANY folder
Hi, I have a situation whereby a company group uses SBS2000 in each of its 3 remote offices independantly (each office is a different company within the group and do not need to be joined
The director's laptop uses the same static ip address for each branch, i.e. 192.168.16.9 and a DNS record in each branch points this address to the local AD in order for him to be recognised on each domain. (His computer/username account is the same in each branch)
Problem: On random occasions, when he connects to a remote branch and tries to access the COMPANY folder, the folder shows up as being "empty", even though there are numerous folders in it
The problem only occurs at the remote offices and not at the original location where he spends most of his time (and where his email account is kept)
Is this perhaps something to do with Windows XP Pro using a cache somewhere along the line which needs to be flushed
Is there anyway to solve this problem so that he can log on to any branch and access their COMPANY folder
PS: Yes, Windows 2003 servers linked by VPN is the next step, but at the moment, cost is unfortunately an issue. Tag: SBS 2003 Forum Tag: 142778
Exchange Mail bouncing: Body type not supported by Remote Host
Hi All
I am the administrator for my companies network and
SBS2000. I often recieve email from the server saying
that is it undeliverable to the particular user. They
always have the same error message about body type not
being supported. All of the users this happens to have
thier email redirected to an external account as they are
not full time employees and prefer it not to use our
system. However this is still a nuisance and would prefer
it if it did not happen. Has anyone come accross a
similar problem? or have any advice on how to fix it.
I have attached the body of the error message produced by

Many emails will not open with the message in the preview pane -
'This item contains active content that cannot be displayed in the preview

This is happening to some internal and external emails and some do not have
any attachments. Emails from certain users are the problem with the internal

Earlier this morning I restarted the server and this appears to be the start
of the problem. I had not altered any settings. The other day we updated GFI
MailSecurity anti-virus but I can't see that that should cause a problem.

exchange server problem!
I have an SBS2000 setup with 10 clients (XP and W98) conected via a single

on fine, access server files and Internet. Email comes in to outlook as
normal but When they select 'new' in Outlook and 'to' for access to the
global address list the the following error comes up 'network problems are
preventing connection to the microsoft exchange server'
I have changed network cables, network cards and tried different ports on
the switch and the server has ben shut down and restarted but this hasn't
helped. Users can reply to emails that come in normally but they cant send
any new post via the GAL.
The SBS2000 has 25 licenses in total. None of the other clients have this

missing mail/authentication
Hi,
Sorry for asking the same question twice but I need to know for sure:
Because of unwanted relaying of a pop3-connector I got the advice to turn
off basic authentication in the smtp and pop-server. This didn't work
because no mail was getting through (I probably must change something at
the client-side, too?).
Unfortunately when we came back online the mailserver collected all the
messages at our ISP, but didn't deliver them in the mailboxes (probably
'cause no one was authenticated?). But now they're nowhere to be found. Not
even in the /backoffice/connectivity/....folders.
How can this be? Is it possible to collect about 300 mails and just let
them disappear because there is something wrong with authentication? Or is
there a place where exchange keeps them untill something can access them?
Thanks for listening.....

RRAS arrors
I have an SBS 2000 server that will not allow me start
RRAS. When I try to enable RRAS through RRAS monitor, the
wizard runs fine, but the service will not start. The
event viewer logs event id 7024 with the following
message: "the routing and remote access service
terminated with service specific error 32797". I have
not been able to find much on this topic.
I noticed that oledb32.dll and oledb32r.dll were older in
the c:\program files\common files\system\ole db directory
than in the service pack directory. Also the files would
not register. I copied the sevice pack directory variants
of the 2 files to the ole db directory and was able to
register them, although I still get the same error
starting RRAS. I also noticed that some of the other
RRAS files noted in the remote access key of the registry
(like rasrad.dll and rasauth.dll) would not register
either.
Any ideas ? I'm stuck and frustrated.

InfoPath in Partner Pack?/
Just got the (UK) update to the Partner Pack - and realised that whilst
OffiPro2003 is included, I suspect that the InfoPath component is not. I
guess because latter belongs to the Pro ENTERPRISE version?
If so, this is a bit of a shame. I know that Msft are positioning InfoPath
as a corporate thing, but it would have been lovely to be able to 'play'
with the concept in a smaller environment. Smaller businesses often deal
with numerous forms, and any new tool would be worth exploring.
If they really want to beat Adobe PDF in the e-Forms game, it would be good
for them to disseminate far and wide - as they usually do.

Email "Received' Time Stamps
Could somebody tell me why the server stamps the emails with the received
date and time at which they were dowloaded and
not when the email was actually received at the ISP? As of now, my emails
show up in blocks in 15 minutes intervalw, with the time and date when the
server received them. What I would love for it to show is when the email was
originally received at the ISP.
If Outlook Express can do this when downloading POP3, should the SBS be able
to do it? Is there a way to fix this?
The reason this matters is that my customer runs an E-Bay business and just
had a day of Internet connection outage. He called me to say that he is
missing a day's worth email. After some troubleshooting, I found out that he
was not missing any emails, but all the emails got stamped with the date and
time when the connection was fixed., and the server as able download it,
exactly a day later.

Off Topic: TightVNC Installation
Hello,
SBS2K. Win2000/XP clients.
I decided to go with TightVNC for remote desktop management. I have a few
installation questions though:
1. Is it possible to deploy it (in service mode) to multiple machines
remotely? I know that I can place the program file in a shared folder and
send all users a message having them execute it, but to be honest, I don't
really trust the users to do it.
2. Also, according to the documentation here
(http://www.tightvnc.com/winst.html), you can use the same password across
multiple machines by copying a registry key. Does anyone know how to do
this? I have had no experience with copying registry keys to other machines.
Also, can that be done remotely?
If it is not possible to deploy it remotely, and I have to move to each
machine to do it, is it at least possible to write a script that runs the
installation command "tightvnc-1,2,9-setup.exe /sp- /verysilent" (this I can
do), then import that registry setting the article referenced above
mentions, then perform a reboot (this I also know how to do) so that the
service can go ahead and start?
If I'm not making sense, please let me know, but I do appreciate any help.
Thanks,

found to be due to InCD packet writing TSR.
The Win98SE client occasionally gets locked out of the network. (SBS Admin

Using Old SBS as Workstation
Hi to all,
I'm not sure if this is the right group but I'll ask any.
We recently added a new SBS 2000 server and now I have a
old SBS 4.5 server that I want to convert to a workstation.
Can this be done, and if so, how?
TIA

Restricting Emails from exchange
Is there anyway on Exchange server 2000 to ban all mails from a specific
address as one of my clients is getting threats.
If anyone can help it would be a great help.
Thanks in advance

Pop/SMTP problems
Hi,
I know the pop3-connector isn't the best way to retrieve your mail and
we're planning to switch to smtp soon. But till then I have some big
problems here (SBS 2k):
- people are getting unwanted mails from our server. It seems the pop3-
connector is "sending out" messages again that have a different (domain)
name then ours. The probable result is that people are receiving those
messages twice and complain about it. Is there a way to prevent this?
- one advice I did get was to turn off basic authentication (and
anonymous authentication). This didn't work because no mail was getting
through (I probably must change something at the client-side, too?).
Unfortunately when we came back online the mailserver collected all the
messages at our ISP, but didn't deliver them in the mailboxes (probably
'cause no one was authenticated?). My question: where are those messages?
In a couple of days I hope we have a new mx-record and bSMTP to deliver
mail in a good way. But till then I must use the ol' pop-3-collector in a
safe way and I really want to know what happened to all our mail that
just vanished.
Thanks,
