Have upgraded a client from W98 to XP (clean install) and attached to
SBS2000 domain.
All seems well except some programs on the client needing updating can't; eg
Ad-aware Reference file; McAfees AutoUpdate (though this can be done from
the server) and I dare say some others I haven't got round to installing
yet.
I used a floppy to attach client to domain, having first removed client from
list of computers and then re-created it using the same name as before.
SBS Firewall Client is installed; XP Firewall is not!
Any thoughts?

The XP firewall should be there, but turned off. Why do you want the XP
firewall active? You are inside a supposedly protected network (you have ISA
or other firewall on front of your network)? right?

If you start blocking ports with a firewall inside your LAN... then you will
have problems doing every day stuff. This applies to any computer inside the
LAN that has a firewall regardless of the OS.

It is turned off!
I don't want it on!
I just thought it would be useful to know that it wasn't the culprit!

I see :-)

In fact by default in Windows XP (pre-SP2) the XP firewall is turned off by
default in any installation. When XP SP2 is released the firewall will be
turned on by default... but there is some group policy setting that turns it
off (or at least partially) when is part of the domain.

So any thoughts as to why only this machine has the problem.
I haven't changed any settings on the server. However, I did 'remove' the
machine from the Computer list before re-creating it. Could that have
inadvertantly caused it.

I've just noticed the ambiguity in the title of my post!
I was wondering why you were going on about the 'XP Firewall'
Its been a long day not helped by windowsupdate crawling along when trying
to patch new machine!

Hi Chris!

You really have me confused now :-)

I don't undestand what are we talking about. Would you mind rephrasing your
question? I see that in your other post you say that there is one machine
which has the problem, but I don't see what the problem is (I probably need
my afternoon coffee).

Sorry about that.

Ahhh... I just reread the whole thread and I think I understand now. For
some weird reason I thought you were asking why the XP firewall wasn't
working. I really need to pay more attention to what I'm posting. :-)

Could you check the ISA client on that machine and make sure is not set to
autodiscover? Also, does everything else work well on the computer (i.e.
Access to websites, other programs using the internet)?

I apologize for what I said previously... you should have thought that I was
going crazy!

LOL
As I said I don't think the title of my posting helped!
I'll check the setting at work tomorrow; I think it is set to Autodiscover
though it did 'refresh' OK when tested.
There's been no problem with web access.
I could ignore the problem on this particular machine but I intend to
upgrade the others over the next few weeks and some of those do need to
connect out.

Firewall Client is not set to autodiscover.
Have just installed Spamcop and that can't 'get out' to update either.
I had this same problem on all the clients after a SBS installation and was
advised to untick 'ask unauthenticated users for identification' under
Outgoing Web Requests in ISA which solved the problem!
