With all the technology upgrades between WIN2K and XP, especially after the
latest XP SP is it necessary to install the firewall client on a workstation
running XP on a Small Business Server Network? Seems to me that itâ??s
important to turn off the built in firewall because some application (like
Norton Anti-Virus) canâ??t find the computer on the network therefore cannot
install the application remotely when XP firewall is turned on.

Hi,

The Firewall Client is needed when you have ISA installed on the server. It
makes sure that users can access the internet properly.

Does the firewall client do anything more than change the proxy setting in
Internet Explorer or does it do more. In other words, if I didn't install the
firewall client and changed the proxy settings manually would it be the same?

It does do more than adding the proxy settings. It enables the client to ftp
for example, use MSN IM and all the other stuff that is going through
internet. The Firewall client hasn't got anything to do with the firewall
settings on connections in XP.

From my ISA Server 2000 book:

Web Proxy Service - The Web Proxy Service provides and controls access
to the Web protocols, which are Application layer protocols. These
include HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and Gopher.

Firewall Service - This service allows virtually all Winsock
applications to access the Internet without those applications needing
to be aware of the Firewall Service.

On the surface, ISA is confusing. Proxy Service? Firewall Service?
SecureNAT??? What is all this stuff...?!? But, after you dig a little
deeper, you'll find that... umm... it's even more confusing that you
thought! Hehe
