Running SBS 2000 on a Compaq Proliant. We had the boot drive fail, it was
being mirrored. The boot drive is not bootable and returns an error message
of imminent failure. The mirrored drive seems to be ok, but how do I break
the mirror and make it the active boot drive when I cannot boot to the OS?

If it's a s/w mirror - could be trouble. Perhaps someone else might
know more.

However, if it's a hardware mirror, you should have a BIOS startup
screen/message prompting you to hit a key to jump into it's setup. And
in there break the mirror.

I set it up on a separate disk: 2 9.1GB drives.
It was completed using the Disk Management module in SBS.
Does this help?

Duncan,

Let's see if this works...

Try shutting down and removing the primary SCSI drive (the one that failed).
Then set the physical SCSI ID on the secondary drive to SCSI 0. Then attach
this drive to the same SCSI channel (connector) as the original (primary)
drive and reboot.

Merv,

I removed both drives. Changed the jumper on the secondary drive from Auto
to ID 0 and placed it in the primary slot. I tried this with the primary
both, out of the secondary slot and in the secondary slot. Both returned a
Non-system disk or disk error. Any other suggestions?

First, I'm assuming that you have a full backup of your server.

If the primary disk was also originally set to AUTO, set the secondary back
to auto, remove the primary disk and try booting again on the "secondary"
disk.

I suspect the problem here is that when you set up the mirror, you did not
first create a small and format partition on the secondary drive to
automatically have the MBR put onto it. So, your secondary disk is not
bootable. So, what you need is a floppy disk configured as a Fault Tolerant
Boot Disk.

Set up dynamic disks

Fault Tolerant Boot Disk (you may have to use the SBS disks to create this
and you'll need a copy of your SCSI controller driver)
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.win2000.file_system/browse_thread/thread/1fd2dc7e1159c355/c53ad91ba4664743?lnk=st&q=windows+2000+mirror+%22fault+tolerant+boot+disk%22&rnum=6&hl=en#c53ad91ba4664743

And remember, SBS 2000 came with 2 free MS Support calls (at least in the US
version). (800) 936-4900. These can be a lifesaver.

Merv,
I already figured out that I needed the boot files and changed the ini.
It is up and running, thanks,
