I have an SBS4.5 Server, just bought a new server and installed SBS2000. We
are going to build a whole new domain, pretty much start from scratch. We
are going to use EXMERGE to backup the old emails from the 4.5 domain. Then
we are going to use Exmerge to import those to our new domain.

Here's the question. On the 4.5 domain the usernames on the network (and
mailboxes) were the users first name only, on the new domain we are going to
first initial last name usernames. I have never run Exmerge but I want to
make sure that I will be able to map the old mailboxes to the right new
accounts.

Any advice?

Thanks!
Douglas

I would use Exmerge.exe to export your current mailboxes to pst files. Then
when SBS 2000 and Exchange is installed and running, use Outlook to import
your pst files into your user mailboxes. This is less hassle and you can
see right away if the import works correctly for each mailbox.

Hello Douglas,

Since you are changing the log on/exchange alias names when installing the
new server, what you will want to do is to simply rename the "alias.pst"
files to match their new alias on the 2000 server.

For example, if John Doe's old logon name was John, then his exmerged .pst
file would be john.pst. Simply renamed that .pst file to jdoe.pst. This
should allow exmerge to successfully send the email back into the new
mailboxes.

Also, please note that before exmerging data back into Exchange 2000, you
will want to implement the following KB article:
