We are running a W2KSBS with Exchange using a ISP POP3 for external email.
The user logs onto the domain xxx.local. When they send external email it
goes out through the ISP however the reply address that is associated with
this external email is joe@xxx.com which is the FQDN but joe doesn't exist.
Some ISP's allow a second alias which allows us to enter this alias and
therefore get around the invalid email reply address issue.

This particular ISP doesn't allow two alias's so have to come up with a
different resolution.

Bill,

First, enter the correct email address (e.g: user@ISP.com in the E-Mail
Addresses tab of each user in Active Directory Users. You may need to
uncheck the box "Automatically update email addresses based on recipient
policy". This will correct the reply address issue and creat another issue:
If a user from xxx.local tries to send an email to a user outside the
xxx.local domain, but within the ISP.com, the xxx.local server will try but
fail to resolve that recipient. To resolve this, open the SBS Admin Console
and go to: SERVERNAME (Exchange), Servers, SERVERNAME, Protocols, and
right-click on Default SMTP Virtual Server. Click on the Messages tab, and
in the box "Forward all mail with unresolved host:" enter the the ISP's smtp
server FQDN e.g.: SMTP.ISP.COM.

Cheers!

Rodger
