    - ISA and PCs on the LAN We used to have our SBS2000 setup so that any PC on our network could get DHCP, and using IE's LAN / automatic settings browse the internet. Now however, we must manually enter the proxy address, and use usernames / passwords to get out. This is annoying. (may have started since SBS SP1, dunno) What rules are needed to allow any PC assigned a DHCP address to be able to browse without ISA blocking?     - POP3 Failed to check the POP3 account I have been trying to figure out why I get these two error messages in Event Viewer alternating for a while, then connect and get all the mail downloaded, only to start doing it again a bit later. Eventually I get all the mail, but of course with great delay due to this problem. Does it look like a problem on my end or on yahoo's end?     - Closing user accounts Hi When it comes time to closing users, what do people do? I know I can either disable the user or delete them totally. However, what will happen to the users email files? Is there a way that I can create a new OU titled "ex users" or similar that I can place old users in so that there will always be a record of which users there have been in the past and so that there will always be a store of that users email account in case for any reason somebody needs to access them? I would be interested to find out what other people do. Thanks in advance to anyone that can give me an idea of the differant problems around this area.     - Domain Authentication via Wireless Access Point My customer has a dual-homed server running Windows Small Business Server 2000 with one NIC connected to the LAN and the other connected to the Internet via a hardware firewall. ISA Server 2000 is also used with some IP filters for Blaster, etc. This customer wants to access his domain user account on his laptop via a wireless access point - until now, he has been using a wired connection into his old laptop's nic. Wiring the wireless access point into the Ethernet switch, assigning it a LAN IP address and using MAC address to control acces works with getting the laptop to work to the WAP but domain authentication is not working - he cannot access his user and company shared folder, etc. Reading the various white papers, etc., I think that the WAP needs to be wired to the hardware firewall and be given an IP address in the subnet used by the internal connection of the hardware firewall and the external connection of the server - effectively, the DMZ. We would need Certificate services running on the server along with RRAS, etc. so that the user authenticates with the server via Remote Access. Is this correct? Or is it possible to configure the WAP on the LAN and obtain domain authentication on this internal subnet? If so, how can this be achieved, please? Thanks in anticipation. Joe.     - Patching I would like to know how how people here handle this patching madness. I work in a company of three full-time and two part-time employees. One of our full-time employees is the owner, who has many non-technical responsibilities although he has a technical background. One of the part-time employees is an administrative assistant with no technical background. The other part-time employee works two or three mornings a week. My full-time colleague is still getting up to speed on servers but also takes care of lots of the easier calls. This pretty much leaves me largely or wholly responsible for about 40 servers, including about 20 SBS units. I have VPN access to most of them but I've been reluctant to patch remotely, if only on account of having heard that some error messages don't display on the Terminal Services session. Plus, our clients are widely scattered geographically, so if something blows up it may not be easy for me to make an emergency on-site visit. In addition to server maintenance I also have to do routine service calls such as "I can't print" or "My UPS is beeping." It's hard to ignore the things that people demand that you fix right away while doing work that nobody asked you to do (we did have one smart guy who asked us for the Blaster patch though). We got stretched to the limit by the blackout in the Northeast; lots of stuff got fried or otherwise discombobulated. I really wanted to patch for Blaster but had no way to do it unless I did it remotely, and even then I'd have to go home and do it after hours. I think I may have patched about 10 or 15 of the 40, tops. Yesterday I made it to a server but it already had W32.Welchia on it. So what's a bedraggled technician to do?     - Distribution Group I have a created several distribution groups for my client. I changed all the addresses from *.com to *.local due to a spam issue. Now one of the external users wants to reply back obviously he tried and the mail bounced back. I really don't want the user replying back.     - domain controller and exchange 5.5 issues Have a domain controller with exchange 5.5 we recently demoted and have set up a new 2000 server dc. The exchnage box now just runs as a mail server but since this move am know having trouble setting up new email users, a user will be set up fine and get access to network but not to the exchange mail server. Always wants a domain password, which when entered is said to be incorrect. Seems the old dc is not looking at the new dc correctly. Can not set up a Primary Windows NT account i the user details on exchange. Get an error message from Exchange administrator when looking at old accounts, "no mapping between account names and security Id's was done, Microsoft Windows NT ID no: 0xc0020534".     - DNS Hi on my sbs 2000 server, if i go into the the properties of my lan connection and then the properties of tcp/ip, on the general tab my Preferred DNS server is the ip address of my SBS 2000 server and the alternate DNS Server is the 127.0.0.1 address. Is this correct? Do i need to put in the DNS Server of my ISP somewhere? I thought that this was the spot. If i go into admin tools and then dns and right click on my server, on the interfaces tab it is set to "only the following IP address" which has the ip address of my server. Is this correct? On the forwarders tab it says it is not available because this is a root server. Is this correct? I am confused. Something does not sound right to me. Please help someone.     - Thanks to reader IK This is in reference to post "Trend Officescan Not Updating" posted on 8/31/03, thanks IK for posting the hotfix and link needed from Trend. I was having this exact same problem and have corresponded with Trend but was never able to get it resolved. I have since obtained this hotfix and for the first time, my w/s updated automatically. I did not need to do a manual update. One question though, while my w/s updated automatically, when I opened the Trend Server Protect Management Console, I noticed that the server was still at pattern 628 (the last pattern file). It downloaded pattern 630 (the newest) and deployed it to all the w/s but the server is still at 628. I could hit the "deploy now" button & it would update to 630. Is there a separate hotfix for this. Or is it something I'm missing? I'm running the Client Server Suite from Trend. Anyone know the answer to this? TIA! Tag: SBS Exchange upgrade fails Tag: 129260

    - Disabling a user's internet access The manager of my client's medical company asked me to disable internet access for one user. A while back, the doctors had an issue viewing X-rays over the internet using special software, and the only solution was to apply the ISA allow rule to any request. Not exactly ideal security, but it was the only way to get the software to work properly. I need to maintain this setting. Is there any other way to disable a user's internet access?     - trend micro messaging suite Hi last night i was running server protect at around 11pm. I installed it yesterday for the first time on the network. The Server hung but was still scanning files and working. This morning at around 8am, i had to reboot the server and all appears fine now. I excluded the files/folders necessary from scanning such as ntds, sysvol, exchange folders, ntds.dit etc etc. Why would it hang? Server has got 256mb of RAM. Logs did not show anything as to why it hung as it was still working in the background.     - SBS2000 never hangs up dialup I have an ISDN dialup and collect mail with the pop3 connector on Exchange server. I have a batch file to trigger the dialup with rasdial on the command line before pop3 collection every 30 minutes. Everything works fine except that the server never drops the dial-up connection. The idle time is set to 5 minutes but there seems to be continual network activity keeping the line up. The server is running DHCP and all clients are set to get their IP and DNS information automatically from the server. IP routing is enabled as is packet filtering.     - Terminal Services Ports I am working with a SBS 2000 server that has TS enabled. The server has 2 nics with one with a 12.102.XXX.XXX real world IP. If I try to access TS using the same ISP that the server is on I get a time out error. If I use a diffrent ISP (Road Runner) then everything works. The server ISP says they are blocking all non-essential traffic on their net between computers. If I can provide them with the ports that TS uses they will open them up for me.     - remote connection Hi! I have a client who needs to take a laptop to a remote location and connect to query databases 3x/week. I can connect remotely as administrator--I do all the time. I need the employee to connect into their own pc and run it as if they were sitting there. Is that possible? I have vpn open, I can connect but it doesn't do anything other than show that I'm connnected. I can't view the network, etc. Do I need a script? How do I do this? Details: SBS2k as pdc. Win2k server as member server (file and print serving). The data is on the member server. The pdc merely handles AD and connections. All ip's are manually assigned--10.0.0.#. The external nic is of the 192.168.#.# (can't remember). They have a router. ADSL connection. All workstations running Win XP SP1 with u2date patches. Servers were patched up to date as of Monday.     - SBS2000 Implementation I'm working with a business who have two, shortly to be three, locations. For reasons unknown to me they are currently running two separate installations of SBS2000 (one for each site). The three locations will all have broadband connections to the internet. The servers are currently used for file serving and email through exchange. The choices I can see are: 1) That they consolidate to one copy of SBS 2000 at the main site and have win2k servers configured as additional domain controllers at each of the other sites. (The additional servers will also require ISA server for proxy control). Each of the sites will be linked by VPN. The additional domain controllers will allow local login and centralised admin via AD. 2) They implement Win2k server at each of the three sites. One server will also run Exchange server for clients at all three locations. Each server will also have ISA server for proxy controls. Each site will be linked by VPN. AD replication will allow local logins and cetralised management. I know the second option is more expensive but the customer is getting close to the 50 user SBS threshhold.     - Restoring Information Store with Veritas Ok, using sbs 2000 fully patched. Our exchange store got corrupted and I was trying to restore it using veritas backup exec. Came accross a problem that I hope someone may be able to solve. Every time I tried, the restore job failed. In event manager it had: Source: ESE BACKUP Event: 904 "Information Store (1300) Callback function call ErrESECBRestoreGetDestination ended with error 0xC7FE1F41 Database is in use." According to MS KB Article 291996 (and Veritas) this is caused by not dismounting the databases or by failing to allow overwrite permissions by restore jobs. However, I have definitely done this on the Mailbox Store and the Public Folder Store and it still doesnt work. I have also checked that the store names are the same on the backup tape as on the server. I have kind of got round the problem by just moving all the files from the MDBDATA folder and then restoring. This isnt ideal and I was wondering if anyone knows why this may be happening.     - Dealing with high volume of mails We are getting high volume of spam for someone who was a sbs2000 user and then he left and so his user account was removed from the AD. Is there anything in sbs2000 which can be used to handle this thing so if any email arrives for that particular recipeint it automatically be deleted or rejected and hence this doesnt end up in the administrator account.     - System cannot find username This is an SBS2000 Domain with a NT workstation. This user let the password expire. When user tried to log in this AM, from a NT 4 workstation, the error system cannot log you on, check username and domain. I was able to log in from this workstation. I had user try to log on from my machine, same error. I have tried modifying the username, still same issue. I'm to the point to were I want to delete the account and recreate it but I'm afraid that his mail will be gone. can I export a mailbox to a pst file from the exchange system manager?     - 'Retrieve Now' Button missing from POP3 Connector We have just done a fresh install (on a new computer) of SBS-2000 from a Microsoft Action Pack install disk set. This is the version of SBS-2000 that is shipped with SP4 for Windows 2000 and SP3 for Exchange. All went smoothly. Everything works OK. Just the 'Retrieve Now' button is missing from the POP3 Connector! Re-installed the connector several times (including manually removing all references to it from the registry on the last occasion) to no avail. The connector works fine, we just can't manually force a download of mail if we need it in a hurry! Any ideas how a button can go missing yet the connector still work?     - Exchange and ADSL (Again!) Hi everyone, I have a SBS2000 that I've just had to reformat and reinstall. On reinstallation, the customer wanted to upgrade from a permanent dialup connection to an ADSL connection. I have installed a 2nd NIC in the SBS box, and can successfully web browse from each workstation so I know the Internet connectivity is OK. Here is my problem: The server is unable to send or receive any e-mail. Mail just sits in the outbound queue. I have run the Internet Connection Wizard and answered all the relevent questions correctly (5 times). The internet connection has a static IP address which has been correctly configured, and the MX records for the domain point to the correct IP address. However, I am unable to ping the IP address, telnet to port 25 of the IP address or traceroute to the IP address. As far as I can see, I have opened port 25 on ISA server This one has me stumped.     - administrator exchange account Hi i had to do a restore from CD of mailboxes in exchange. I managed to recover the mailboxes ok except i have this one query. When i recovered the mailboxes, i only have got one mailbox for Administrator with a red X through it. I do not have another mailbox for administrator without a red x through it, so it will be deleted in about 30 days. What are the consequences if this happens and what can i do to fix it? I do not need the mail in the administrator mailbox with the red x through it. If need be, how do i create another administrator mailbox if i purge the one with the red x through it? Do you think that this is OK to do?     - mailbox recovery issue Hi i have got a strange problem with a mailbox that i recovered. In the mailbox store it says i have got 842 items but when i log into the mailbox, i cannot see items in the inbox and there are 342 items in sent mail which i can see. It also says i have two new messages in the inbox but i cannot see them either. I can see all of the contacts. Is there any way i can recover my mail in my inbox?     - NTBackup trouble For some reason my scheduled backups are not working anymore. Running SBS2k and backups have been configured through with a script and Task Scheduler.exe. I have had no problems for the last 5 months, however when i now view the backup log files, each log contains a message saying no blank media was present!     - Please help!!, Exchange on SBS When attempting the Exchange 2000 Service Pack 3 Update component of SBSSP1a, I get the following refusal to proceed : "You can use this edition of Microsoft Exchange 2000 Service Pack Update to update existing version of Exchange 2000 only." The SBS-flavour of Exchange 2000 is certainly installed and handling mail happily (Version 6, Build 4629.1, Service Pack 1) on Windows 2000 Server (now at SP4 from the SBSSP1a). Third-party apps being disabled makes no difference, and this is a clean install running several months without issue or Event until now. File-capture methods don't spot any miscreants, so I'm leaning towards corrupt or erroneous Registry referrals...but I just can't seem to track any down? Some of you may have seen my earlier post...trying to SP3
my SBS Exchange, but the upgrade refuses to see the SP1
version running. SP4 for windows portion of SBSSP1a worked
fine.
Have tried to re-install Exchange from SBS setup to
restore the appropriate Registry flags, but the install
refuses to "see" my existing Active Directory
Configuration files in NTDS.
If I go the "CD3" route, I'll lose my config, I guess.

Any ideas please?
