Hi I have SBS2K as my server with a vast amount of space for files etc. I
have a separate partition that is 10GB in size for exchange. Exchange has
almost used this up and I have asked uses to remove e-mail that are no
longer needed. The total loss in the end was 2.36 GB made free. but exchange
has not released this from the partition and still says it is in use and
keeps growing. Do I have a misconception of exchange on how it uses physical
memory? I feel very sure that the memory is supposed to be released back as
free memory but it has not.
Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Andy C

You may want to go in and shorten the retention time for Deleted Mail.
and Mailboxes.

Mailboxes > Properties > Limits

You may also want to Purge Mailboxes for deleted AD accounts.

Additionally to free up the space being used by the Exchange logs you'll
need to do an Exchange Aware Backup ( ...like NT-Backup )

This may sound stupid but how do you do an exchange aware backup?
Thanks again

Andy,

This should help:
http://www.smallbizserver.net/SBS2000/How_do_I_backup_my_server.aspx

The key here is to select the "First Storage Group"... as you can see in the
first pretty screenshot that Mariette has there.

Andy,

please clarify. Your topic refers to memory usage but the content
suggests filespace is the question.

Re: Exchange memory usage by David

David

Andy,

Is it one file that is taking up the space (say the priv1.edb?) or are there
alot of .log files that are consuming the space. If it's alot of .log files,
then as mentioned in a previous post an online backup of Exchange should
clear a large portion of those files. If it's one of the
priv1.edb/priv1.stm/pub1.edb/pub1.stm files, then you may want to do an
offline defrag of the Exchange database. Before doing an offline defrag you
should make sure you have a backup of the databases first. Then you will
need to dismount the database using Exchange System Manager (right click on
the Mailbox Store and select Dismount Store). Example command line to run
from a command prompt from the \program files\exchsrvr\bin directory

eseutil /d ..\mdbdata\priv1.edb

If the priv1.edb is in the default \program files\exchsrvr\mdbdata directory

Once the eseutil command completes you will need to go back into the
Exchange System Manager and mount the database.

the problem is down to filespace and it is down to a singular file
priv1.edb.
By defrag do you mean use the standard disk defrag tool in system tools.
Thanks again.

No, please search support.microsoft.com for 'exchange offline defrag'.

Exchange, like most RDBMS systems, which it is, doesn't actually delete
information from the files it uses (the store). It simply marks the area
(pages) as 'free'. When a new page is required it uses the 'free' space to
store information.

SO fragmentation in Exchange server consists of two aspects, fragmentation
of the 'store' or database and file level fragmentation. To defrag both you
first need to use 'eseutil' to defrag the RDBMS while it is offline and also
do a file level defrag while the files are not in use (ie.
offline/dismounted).
