Hi

We are running sbs2003 - we are backing up with the software 'Tapeware'.
We do a full backup !

Somebody mentioned that you may want to stop exchange to do a full backup?

Does Exchange back up OK with out stopping it ? Has anybody had to do an
Exchange restore, full or partial from a back up tape?

Would be interested in procedure which has been tried and tested.

Are you using the version of Tapeware specific for SBS that is 'Exchange
aware'?
http://www.tapeware.com/?PID=150

Check your \Program Files\ExchSrvr\MDBDATA directory and see if you have a
ton of .log files. If you do, then your tape backup software is not properly
backing up Exchange. Furthermore, without a proper backup, you may have
issues in restoring your Exchange database.

It has never been necessary to shut down Exchange in order to do a full
backup, with either SBS2000 or SBS2003, as long as you are using a proper
backup solution. Furthermore, with SBS2003 you also have Volume Copy Shadow
Services to handle some of the 'file in use' issues.

Finally, are you aware the the built in backup utility that comes with
SBS2003 *is* Exchange aware?

So one option if you backup software is not exchange aware is to use the
SBS2003 backup to backup exchange to a file on a local drive and then have
your 3rd party backup backup that file. A bit convoluted but it should work.
