Three of the Exchange Services (MTA Stacks, Information
Store and System Attendant) fail to start on reboot of a
Windows 2000 SBS machine.

Does anyone know what may cause these three services to
fail to start? They can be started manually. If left set
to Automatic start in the services list they fail to
restart on next reboot.

The Application Event Log contains several errors in
relation to the Metabase Update service failing to start.
The machine is the DC in a small network with no other
servers or networks involved.

Thanks

James

Is your server fully patched? Since when do you get these errors?

Hi Marina,
Yes the SBS is running all the latest service packs. The
problem has been noticed on a previous reboot a few weeks
back, but we restarted the services maually and they
started first time.
I can still restart these services manually but am left
wondering why they fail to start automatically.
This problem may be linked to a post I wrote earlier on
today regarding a java script error when I try to open SBS
admin console. That problem too is giving me serious
concern as 9/10 times when I open the console to check the
services, I get a javascript error and need to reboot to
solve the problem. My only way to access the services is
to right click My Computer ans use "manage" ...but even
then quite a few times I attempt to open a properties page
and one doesn't open. When attempting to close the window,
I get a message telling me that I need to close the
properties - even though I cannot see or access them.
Sorry to merge these two problems, but one may be causing
the other.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide.

James

And what did you do before the previous reboot?

make sure:
1. if 2 nics, internal is 1st in binding order
2. all nics point to the internal for dns.

probably exchange is trying to find a global catalog server (itself in the
sbs world) during boot, it times out....then you can manually start after
booted

Thank all for your help - my first problem is solved, i.e.
the binding order was incorrect, hence exchange looking
for a catalogue server out on the external netcard.
My second problem still exists but I have tried a few
things which "may help someone to help me" :)
The problem: When opening SBS management console, I get
an "Internet Explorer Script error" Title pop up and from
then on cannot see certain folders, cannot right click to
select properties and cannot see any network connections -
all screens appear empty.
Findings so far: All works well enough - in fact 100%
until I connect my external network car into the ADSL
router. That means that all services run, I can use the
SBS console happily and see all files UNTIL the server is
connected to the internet.
...and thats as far as I've got - I've tried nistalling
the IE6 SP1 and restarting, and have also re-installed the
SBS management console.
...any ideas? ...anyone?

Re: Exchange Services Failing to Start by James

James

I seem to have been able to narrow the problem down and so
far my server has been running for 12hours unaffected.
Hopefully it will stay that way.

On trying different things it seemed like the problem only
occured when the External network card was connected to
our Internet Router. Upon using netstat /n I could see
that several things were occuring whenever the error
occurred. The was connections being attempted from an IRC
port on several external IP addresses. - Checking and
tightening up the firewall prevented these connections
from being established.

The other thing I noticed was that the RPC service was one
service that was having issue at the same time as this
problem. I found information on a new virus Blaster which
can use a buffer overun vulnerability to run code on any
Windows OS (apart from Me). The patch can be downloaded
from TechNet by searching for: MS03-026.

Hope this helps anyone else having similar issues. Thanks
for all your help. Hopefully (fingers-crossed) this has
been resolved fully.

James
