We use this to run Outlook. It keeps filling up the server with useless data from the internet. In order to free up the server space we must do a tape backup of Exchange server, and then the space is freed up again. Is there a way to stop Exchange Server from loading all this use less data on our hard drive? If anyone has an answer please send to my email address. Thanks

Are you referring to the 5 mb. files named E*.log in your mdbdata directory?
These files are a normal part of the operation of Exchange Server, and it's
normal for them to be deleted only in a full Exchange-aware backup or upon a
restart of Exchange. This is how Exchange works, and you can't do anything
about it other than daily backups, which presumably you want to do anyway.

These logs contain your good data in addition to the spam, etc. received
from the Internet. You could look into spam filtering from your ISP, GFI or
another 3rd party software vendor, or use Outlook's spam filtering. Also,
I've found that my spam (and even more so virus e-mails) has been greatly
reduced by using the SMTP filter in ISA FP1 to block most messages with
attachments. But eliminating the spam won't help with the log files -
you're going to have those no matter what.

Hi CUS...replying to your email address defeats the object of a newsgroup.
Replies benefit everyone.

You must backup exchange to clear the log files and then free up space (do
not delete manually). You give the impression you dont like doing this, do
you not backup your server ??

Posting messages to newsgroups using your real email address is a
great way to get lots of spam. Please save yourself some hassles by
posting with some sort of anti-spam. I know as I used to use my real
email address and was getting over a 100 swen viruses a day.

Proper maintenance of your Exchange server is to do nightly backups
and to regularly empty your bad mail folder.

in addition to the other comments.

'useless data from the internet' suggests to me that you need to check your
server to ensure it is not relaying http://www.abuse.net/relay.html
