I am having trouble with my Vpn clients, although they can
connect with the VPN fine Outlook refuses to work. My
clients have no trouble using shared resources it just
seems to be a problem with Outlook - it just trys to
connect and fails. Even trying to setup a new account it
can't do the 'check name' just crashes. Any Ideas would be
excellent. Got them using webmail for now but would be
good to get them back on the VPN. I did try using IMAP
instead of exchange server with no luck and i did look at
the registry entrys
ncacn_np rpcrt4.dll
ncacn_ip_tcp rpcrt4.dll
ncadg_ip_udp rpcrt4.dll
ncacn_http rpcrt4.dll

etc and all seems fine on the server. Any input would be
great as am running out of ideas! thanks alot

Sam

Can they resolve the server's ip address just using the netbios name? IE
servername not servername.domainname(.local).

I problems with this before.

My solution at the time was to the server name only to the local hosts file
with its ip address.

It is not the neatest of solutions and there are probably better ways of
achieving the same thing (making sure that client has the fqdn name
configuration and/or is look at your SBS dns server) but it worked.

Thank you for posting your question to the newsgroup.

Once VPN clients are connected, exit to the command prompt and do an
IPConfig /all....
Where are the clients pointing to for DNS and WINS?
Can the clients ping the server by FQDN and Netbios name?

We had a similar error that occurred when a new user was set up for an
existing machine. What worked was to log in as the new user and reinstall
Outlook, then we could get Outlook to resolve the mailbox.

Sam,

Make sure your DNS servers for your PPP adapter are the Server's internal IP
address.

For all ME and 9x OS:
go to start - run - winipcfg and then show all details for your ppp adapters
(once connected)

For all others:
start - run - cmd, then do a ipconfig /all (you may need to do a | more if
you dont get a scroll bar and depending on the number of adapters you have)

What OS are your VPN clients? This will distinguish between whether it is an
issue with DNS or WINS. I believe that ME and all the 9x flavors use WINS
for resolution whilst (i dont think ive ever used that word) xp, nt and 2k
use DNS. LMHOST files should resolve your issues, but I like to use that as
a last resort (as stated by Craig) and have only had to use it on a ME box
(the worst).

Give us more info and the answers to above and itll get fixed.
