Good morning all,

I have an SBS exchange server with the mailroot\vsi1\badmail folder that
filled up and the hard disk ran out of room. After that all sorts of weird
things were happening.

Is my server being used as a SPAM relay?

Can I move the badmail folder to another volume? If so, how?

Thanks in advance,
Reggie Dones

Hi Reggie,

Thank you for posting your question. It's very possible that you server may be a SPAM relay. I am providing an article link
that will assist you with determining if your server is an open relay. In reference to the BadMail folder, you can stop the
Exchange services, rename the BadMail folder and create a new BadMail folder. Note that if you attempt to open the
BadMail folder and it contains hundreds of messages, your server may appear hung.

If you want to move the renamed BadMail folder to another volume, you may do so. You can also delete the renamed
BadMail folder if you like. However, please be aware that any messages queued from that BadMail folder will no longer
appear in the Exchange System Manager Queues.

Hi Reggie,

For routine maintenance on the badmail folder:

Open Notepad.

paste in the following line:

del "C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\BadMail\*" /q

Save it as any_name_you_like.cmd

Run it. See that it deleted all mail from the folder.

If you like it, set up a schedule task for as often as you need.

If your badmail folder is at another location (not the default as above)
then change the location to suit.

thanks for the post Anita and Les

When I checked from an external host, the SMTP server does not relay, yet
there's a bunch of cued up mail bogging the system down. However, it looks
like the system is not delivering. What is causing the mail to come into
the system? Is IIS involved in the breech? Is there a patch or fix for it?

Thanks,
