Hi everyone,
I have a strange problem that I am not sure what could be causing this.
There are certain types of emails that for some reason will not show up in
the inbox of a user it is being sent to. I was able to get an example of
this email from a user who claimed that no matter what he did he could not
receive it from a client. I had him forward it to a external email address
so that I can test it.

I can send any message from the external email and it goes through fine. I
smtp logs show it successful and it appears in the inbox. I then try to
send the one I was forwarded. I look at the logs and its show that it was
recieved and that I got a

Maybe someone else can get more out of that log than I, but in any case the
usual suspects:

- ISP blocking the sender's IP, e-mail address, or something to do with the
sender's mail configuration. I've had a number of these cases for a variety
of reasons. An example would be that RoadRunner blocks mail from
DHCP-assigned IP addresses. In this case, you would hope the sender would
get an NDR.
- AV
- Spam filter
- Outlook filtered view not showing the message
- Outlook rule moving/deleting the message

Well if the message is actally getting to my exchange that would mean that
the isp is not blocking it correct? Hence they are not getting anything(NDR)
that would imply that it is being rejected. That log file is from the email
in question.

My antivirus is completely turned off and I dont have a spam filter running
in the office. I am using an external spam/antivirus service. I go to
viruses or spam all coming through the anitvirus here because it gets
blocked before our sbs service here although I do have the antivirus running
normally.

As far as outlook doing it, it does it on any email address in the office no
matter who it is sent to. Noone gets the message at all.

Very weird ....

Thanks

Eddie

Well since I am getting the log from that email I assume it is actally
making it to our server. But no it does not give any NDR. Our spam filter
is an external service which also does antivirus as well but since it is
getting to the server they are not playing it either. Our anitvirus(norton)
is turned off completely so I know its not that.

Its very wierd because it just seems to be a certain type of email doing
this but it just happens to be a text email......

Thanks

What if you go to ESM and check Message Tracking (under Tools). If you can
get the message to appear there, you can click on it to get detailed
tracking info. Just enter the name of your SBS box, the sender's e-mail
address, and make sure you're searching in an included date and time range.

Well, I looked at the tracking and it shows that it is stuck in the advanced
queue. I am still trying to located anything that might tell me what is
possible causing this but I still think its kinda wierd. I am starting to
think it has to do with the message format itself but I am still trying to
see if it is a setting somewhere.

Thanks

The other thing I should have mentioned is that you can up the logging
levels for Exchange somewhere in ESM. I can't remember exactly where you do
it - it's a "diagnostics logging" tab somewhere. Post back if you can't
find it and I'll track it down. Note whatever you change for undo
purposes - I guess Exchange logging can take over your logs pretty fast.

I'll bet you're right about some property in the message as the cause.

I've had things that have disappeared after hitting the advanced queue
because they'd exceeded the maximum hop count, after going through numerous
ISP spam and AV filters. The solution was to increase the hop count to 25.
In SBS2003, AFAIK it's 30, so you don't get the problem.

Worth a try.

I figured out what it was. The smtp ISA filter was corrupt. I had turned
it off but it was still filtering. I ended up having to delete the sinks
manually. All is working now. Thanks everyone for the help.
