I am trying to set up instant messaging service on a SBS
2000 server and can not make it work. I have done what it
says in the White Paper and I have two problems. 1> When
I try to start the Default Web Site it gives me an error
that says "Address already in use". I also get an error
on the client that says "Logon to Microsoft Exchange
Instant Messaging failed because the service is not
responding. The service is not available or you may not
be connected to the Internet." I have searched
Microsoft's Knowledge Base and tried everything that
looked even similar to this problem but nothing worked.

Please Help.

Thanks

Hello Henry,

1> When I try to start the Default Web Site it gives me an error that says
"Address already in use".

This indicates that the IP Address/Port number for the default web site is
not unique and something else is already listening on that IP Address and
Port number.
If you are running ISA server:

1) Open the ISA Management Console
2) Right click on your server name and choose Properties
3) Choose the Auto Discovery tab and uncheck "Publish automatic discovery
information"
4) Restart the Microsoft ISA Server Control service.

If you are not running ISA server or if the above box is not checked, make
sure that one of the following three things is unique for your Default web
site:

1) IP Address
2) Port Number
3) Host Header

For the Exchange Instant Messaging Authentication issue, take a look at the
following:

266643 XADM: How to Install Instant Messaging Service
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=266643

278974 XCCC: Troubleshooting Authentication Failures in Instant Messaging
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=278974

309508 XCCC: IIS Lockdown and URLscan Configurations in an Exchange
Environment
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=309508

309677 XADM: Known Issues and Fine Tuning When You Use the IIS Lockdown
Wizard
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=309677

Also make sure that client machines are using the version of Messenger that
ships with SBS 2000.

Thanks Mike,

I see now that the W3svc and Instant Messaging Server
Services are not starting. I restart IIS and still do not
see Event ID 8199 or 8194. Why not?

Hello Henry,

Have you enabled Intsant Messaging logging?

266754 XADM: How to Configure Instant Messaging Logging
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=266754

Also, have your resolved the error "Address already in use" when trying to
start your default web site?

Recommended steps:

1) Resolve the "Address already in use" error message if you have not
already done so.
2) Uninstall Instant Messaging and reinstall following:
